  • MLB 2022 | Néstor was really nasty, Abreu is heating up, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 26, 2022 Néstor Cortés limited the Rays to one run in eight innings and struck out five in the Yankees' 7-2 win Thursday. Cortés generated just seven missed swings in a 109-pitch outing tonight, but he also didn't give up much hard contact (and the one time he did, it was a harmless 113-mph grounder from Yandy Díaz). It's the second time this season that he's completed eight innings, and he's 4-1 with a 1.70 ERA through nine starts. Of 144 pitchers who have thrown at least 20 innings, per FanGraphs, Cortés ranks 134th in average fastball velocity at 90.6 mph. He thrives on precision and funk. He changes arm angles, varies the speed of his windup, hides the ball in his delivery, and works like he has a dinner reservation to make. White Sox's Jose Abreu: Hot stretch continues. Abreu went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored Thursday against Boston. Abreu continues to swing a hot bat, and he now has four multi-hit performances in his last nine starts. He has two home runs, six doubles, seven RBI, and seven runs scored in that span. While still considerably worse than his career marks, Abreu has improved his line to .236/.328/.401 across 180 plate appearances for the campaign. Tampa's Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena were hitless against the Yankees. A combined 0-for-7 with a strikeout - Arozarena - and a walk, was the result of both hitters Thursday night against the Yankees. Díaz BA descended to .268 while Arozarena is now hitting .257. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. struggles continue. Gurriel Jr. was 0-for-2 with 2 walks on Thursday 6-3 win against the Angels. Gurriel got on base twice but continues his terrible month of May offensively. The Cuban outfielder is now 8-for-60 during May with no home runs and 2 RBI. His slash line this year is .221/.279/.321. Adolis García has two hits on Thursday against the A's. García who slash line this year is .216/.263/.407, went 2-for-4 with his 9th double of the year and his RBI 27. García scored once and also struck out, batting sixth for the Rangers in a 4-1 win. García's double in the ninth inning brought home the winning run for the Rangers. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: Replaced for defense. Hernández was replaced in the eighth inning of Thursday's game against Colorado for defensive purposes, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Lane Thomas entered the game to take over in left field. Prior to his exit, Hernández went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two RBI. Yoán Moncada was absent from the White Sox lineup on Thursday due to leg soreness. Moncada has battled a variety of ailments this season and is batting just .136/.177/.254 through 62 plate appearances. White Sox manager Tony La Russa told reporters they wanted the third baseman to get two days off in a row.

  • MLB 2022 | Yuli is getting better, Soler homers again, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 25, 2022 Gurriel helped Astros beat Guardians 2-1. Yordan Álvarez and Aledmis Díaz went hitless. Yuli Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a strikeout, even when in the third inning, with bases loaded, was retired on a fly-out. It was a much-needed performance from Gurriel, who hit .319 last season to win the AL batting title but has struggled this year. He entered in an 0-for-9 slide and is hitting .224 this year. Meanwhile, Yordan Álvarez and Aledmis Díaz combined 0-for-6 with three strikeouts - two Álvarez - and two walks - Álvarez again - for the night. Marlins' Jorge Soler: Solo blast in loss. Soler went 1-for-4 with one homer, one RBI and one run scored in Wednesday's loss against the Rays. After striking out in his first plate appearance, Soler blasted a leadoff homer in the fourth to cut Tampa Bay's lead to 5-1. It was the slugger's seventh home run in May and his ninth of the season. Soler is currently slashing .207/.292/.725 with 22 RBI and 16 walks. Rays' Yandy Díaz: Scores once in return. Díaz went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Wednesday against the Marlins. Díaz missed the Rays' previous two games while dealing with a strained left shoulder. However, he returned to hit third in the lineup and worked a walk in his first plate appearance prior to scoring. He has maintained a .275/.396/.375 line across 144 plate appearances this season, tallying three homers, 10 RBI, and 19 runs scored. Rangers' Adolis García: No hit on Wednesday. Adolis García went 0-for-4 Wednesday night against the Angels in a 7-2 win for the Rangers. Adolis struck out once and is now batting .209 for the season. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Drives in pair. Arozarena went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored Wednesday against the Marlins. Arozarena played a part in a five-run first inning for the Rays, delivering a two-RBI double and then coming around to score. He has at least one hit in nine of his last 10 games, during which he's also collected three home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored. After a slow start to the season, Arozarena has improved his line to .264/.313/.423 across 176 plate appearances. José Abreu added his 10th double of the season. José Abreu went 1-for-2 with two walks Wednesday night against the Rex Sox in a 3-1 win. It was Abreu's tenth double of the season, and the veteran first baseman is slashing .229/.320/.392 for the year with 5 HR and 19 RBI. Rangers' Andy Ibáñez: Riding pine Wednesday. Ibáñez didn't start Wednesday against the Angels. Ibáñez has gone just 1-for-17 with a walk and four strikeouts over his last six games, and he took a seat for the third time in the last five matchups. Charlie Culberson started at the hot corner and batted eighth. Yoán Moncada had another rough night at the plate in Wednesday's victory over the Red Sox, going 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts. Things haven't gone smoothly for Moncada since returning from the injured list, as he's hit a paltry .153/.194/.271 with two homers, four RBI and a 19/2 K/BB ratio over 62 plate appearances in his first 14 games. His bat should start to perk up eventually, provided that his recent right leg soreness isn't a bigger issue than he's letting on. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: Idle versus lefty. Hernández was out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. With lefty Julio Urias on the mound for Los Angeles, the lefty-hitting Hernández allowed Lane Thomas to play left field. Hernández saw action as a PH in the seventh facing RH Yency Almonte, but grounded to first baseman Freddie Freeman. Hernández went 0-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's 9-4 loss, but he's still sitting on a solid .806 OPS over 128 plate appearances this season. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Not in Wednesday's lineup. Grandal didn't start Wednesday against the Red Sox. Grandal got a chance to reset after he went 0-for-9 with five strikeouts over the last two games. Reese McGuire started behind the dish and batted eighth.

  • MLB 2022 | Iglesias saves, Abreu homers, Chapman to the IL, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 24, 2022 Raisel Iglesias recorded one out to pick up his 11th save of the season in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Rangers. Iglesias should have had the night off in this one, as the Angels led 5-0 at the start of the eighth inning. Jonah Heim would cut into that advantage via a solo homer to lead off the frame, with an additional solo homer by Mitch Garver with two outs in the ninth inning -- plus a subsequent walk to Kole Calhoun -- necessitating Iglesias' entrance. That started rockily enough, as he immediately gave up an RBI double to Adolis García, but the veteran reliever bounced back to strike out Jonah Heim to end the game. Iglesias is now 11-of-12 in save chances while sporting a 3.94 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 23/4 K/BB ratio in 19 appearances this season. While the ERA stands a bit on the high side, that is largely due to a couple of tough showings earlier this month. José Iglesias singled, doubled, and stole a base Tuesday in Pittsburgh. Iglesias' double in his first plate appearance was the Rockies' only extra-base knock of the night and he followed it up with an infield single and a stolen base in his next trip to the dish. The counting stats have been lackluster, but Iglesias is now hitting .311/.369/.387 and has his first stolen base. White Sox's José Abreu: Notches homer, double in the loss. Abreu went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a double in Tuesday's 16-3 loss to the Red Sox. Abreu ripped a two-run home run off Nick Pivetta in the bottom of the fourth inning before later doubling off the starter in the sixth frame. The homer was his fifth of the year and second in four games. Over his last seven games, Abreu has notched five extra-base hits while batting .346 and driving in seven runs in those contests. The hot stretch has raised his batting average to a still uninspiring .225 over 151 at-bats in 2022, but the 35-year-old may be set to take off as the calendar closes in on June. Astros' Yordan Álvarez: Knocks in 25th run. Álvarez delivered an RBI single in the fifth inning and came around to score in the same frame. He's hit just .167 across his last 10 games but has still driven in four and scored five runs in that span. Overall, Álvarez has maintained a 164 wRC+ with 12 home runs, 26 runs scored, and 25 RBI across 159 plate appearances. Rangers' Andy Ibáñez: Slump continues. Ibáñez started at third base and went 0-for-3 in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Angels. Ibáñez is batting just .050 (2-for-40) over 14 games since May 4. Texas third basemen rank last in the majors with a -0.8 WAR, so it's fair to wonder when they make a change. Ibáñez has started 20 of the team's 41 games at third base while also playing seven at DH, six at first base, and two at second. Yankees placed LHP Aroldis Chapman on the 15-day injured list with left Achilles tendinitis. An MRI taken Monday came back negative for any structural damage, but the Yankees might view this as a good time to give Chapman an extended break seeing as he had allowed an earned run in each of his last five appearances. Clay Holmes, who has a 0.42 ERA and four saves this year, projects to serve as the primary closer for New York while Chapman is on the shelf. Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Back on bench. Gurriel was not in the lineup Tuesday against the Cardinals. Gurriel found himself on the bench for the second time in three games and the third time in the Blue Jays' last five contests. His .225/.273/.326 slash line may be the cause of his drop in playing time, though Raimel Tapia, who started in left field Tuesday, is hitting an even worse .228/.256/.276. White Sox placed OF Luis Robert on the COVID-19 injured list. Robert was off to an impressive start this season, hitting .285/.319/.438 with six homers and six stolen bases across 144 plate appearances. The 24-year-old is showing minor symptoms but could return sometime next week if he's able to pass through the necessary protocols. Jake Burger has been recalled to take his spot on the White Sox' active roster. Yandy Díaz (shoulder) remains absent from the Rays' starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins. Díaz will miss his second consecutive contest due to a left shoulder strain that he sustained Saturday against the Orioles. He's considered day-to-day for now and appears likely to avoid a trip to the injured list. Isaac Paredes takes over at third base on Tuesday evening once again in his absence.

  • MLB 2022 | Vladi's problems continue, Chapman may be injured, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 23, 2022 Reds' Vladimir Gutiérrez: Handed another loss. Gutiérrez (0-6) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over four innings Monday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Cubs. Gutiérrez took the mound for the first time since May 11 and tossed three scoreless frames before running into trouble in the fourth. He gave up an RBI double to Ian Happ followed by Patrick Wisdom's two-run blast. Gutiérrez is now 0-6 with an ugly 8.70 ERA through seven starts this season. He was removed from the rotation earlier this month but never made an appearance out of the bullpen. The 26-year-old is currently lined up to face the Giants at home this weekend but it's unclear if he'll get another start. Yulieski Gurriel and Yordan Álvarez: No hits on Monday against Cleveland. Yuli Gurriel and Yordan Álvarez combined 0-for-7 on Monday in a 6-1 loss to the Guardians. Álvarez walked, struck out, and his BA descended to .250. Meanwhile, Gurriel, who had an offensive rebirth recently, is slashing just .223/.259/.388 with 3 HR and 13 RBI this year. Yadiel Hernández was 1-for-4 Monday against the Dodgers. In a 10-1 loss to the Dodgers, Yadiel Hernández went 1-for-4 with a strikeout facing lefty Tyler Anderson and RH closer Phil Bickford in the 9th. Yadiel seems very comfortable with the Nats in his third MLB season, slashing .319/.355/.466 with 3 HR and 20 RBI after 32 games. José Iglesias went 1-for-3 in a 2-1 loss to the Pirates. Iglesias continues his steady offensive season. The flashy Cuban shortstop went 1-for-3 with a walk on Monday against the Pirates, lifting his BA to .304 for the year. In his eleven-season and first with Colorado Iglesias' slash line after 33 games is .304/365/374. An MRI on Aroldis Chapman's Achilles came back negative, although a trip to the injured list is still possible. The Yankees are treating the ailment as if Chapman has tendinitis, although it doesn't sound like that's an official diagnosis at this point. A decision on whether or not Chapman will be placed on the IL could come later Monday. Clay Holmes is the guy that most likely will fill in at closer for the Yanks. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went hit-less on Monday. Gurriel went 0-for-3 on Monday in a 7-3 loss to the Cardinals. The Cuban outfielder walked and left two-on base and his struggles in the month of May continue. Gurriel is now 8-for-58 (.138) this month, with no homers, and 2 RBI. He is slashing a disappointing .225/.273/.326 this year.

  • MLB 2022 | Cionel was impressive, Iglesias saves again, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 23, 2022 Reds' Vladimir Gutiérrez: Set to start Monday Gutiérrez is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Cubs, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Gutiérrez hasn't made an appearance since being shifted to the bullpen May 13, but he'll rejoin the rotation, at least for one start, for Monday's series opener versus Chicago. The 26-year-old has a 8.65 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and 19:19 K:BB across 26 innings (six starts) this season Orioles' Cesar Prieto: Advances to Double-A. The Orioles promoted Prieto from High-A Aberdeen to Double-A Bowie on Monday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. A two-week stint on the injured list earlier this season wasn't able to derail Prieto, who moves up to Bowie after slashing .340/.381/.619 across 105 plate appearances in 25 games with Aberdeen. The 23-year-old infielder showed impressive contact skills, as he struck out in only 15.2 percent of his plate appearances. May 22, 2022 Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Snags win in extras. Pérez (2-0) earned the win Sunday versus the Rays. He allowed a hit and two walks while striking out three in two scoreless innings. Pérez worked the 10th and 11th innings after a rain delay, and he was able to keep the Rays at bay long enough for the Orioles to get the win. Through eight appearances in May, the southpaw has allowed just one run in 7.2 innings. He owns a 0.66 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB with three holds in 16 outings overall. His solid pitching, albeit somewhat lucky, has earned him a high-leverage relief role. Raisel Iglesias struck out the side Sunday against the Athletics, securing his 10th save of the season. Coming on to protect a three-run lead in the top of the ninth, Iglesias struck out the side on just 12 pitches (10 strikes). The veteran closer has a 4.02 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, and 22/4 K/BB ratio across 15 2/3 innings this season. Yoán Moncada went 1-for-10 with a double Sunday in his return to the White Sox' lineup. Moncada started both games of Sunday's twin-bill against the Yankees, tallying one hit in 10 at-bats. The 26-year-old third baseman was scratched from the White Sox' lineup Saturday due to right leg soreness, but it doesn't sound like a serious concern moving forward. Aroldis Chapman came on in a non-save situation in the ninth inning on Sunday and served up a go-ahead home run to A.J. Pollock. Yankees skipper Aaron Boone turned to his closer with the score 1-1 entering the ninth inning. Chapman responded by serving up that dinger to the first batter that he faced. He also issued a one-out walk to Andrew Vaughn and an RBI double to Adam Engel before departing. Clay Holmes is lurking and ready to usurp the closer's role. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after Sunday's loss to the White Sox that Chapman was receiving treatment for an Achilles injury. It's unclear if he'll require a trip to the injured list, though sitting down for a couple of weeks may actually be in his best interest in the long run. Yandy Díaz (shoulder) was not in the Rays starting lineup Sunday against the Orioles. Diaz got the day off after leaving Saturday's game against the Orioles with a left shoulder strain. The team has an off-day Monday, so a Tuesday return is possible if Díaz can avoid the injured list. Isaac Paredes will get the start at third base Sunday. Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Did not start Sunday. Gurriel was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds. The 28-year-old missed one game with hamstring tightness but returned to the lineup Saturday and went 1-for-3 with a strikeout. Gurriel has a .371 OPS through 16 games in May and hasn't hit a home run since April 25. Zack Collins will bat eighth as the designated hitter in Sunday's series finale. Rangers' Andy Ibáñez: Benched on Sunday. Ibáñez was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. Ibáñez is mired in a 2-for-37 slump and will take a seat for the second time in the past three games. Brad Miller was the man at third base in his place while Mitch Garver served as the designated hitter. Marlins' Jorge Soler: Took seat Sunday. Soler was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reported. After recently missing two straight games due to lower-back stiffness, Soler returned to the lineup as a designated hitter for the first two games versus Atlanta, going a combined 4-for-9 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI. Garrett Cooper handled DH duties in Sunday's series finale while Soler received some extra maintenance for his back.

  • MLB 2022 | Arozarena: two homers, Iglesias saves, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 22, 2022 Yandy Díaz (shoulder) is not in the Rays starting lineup Sunday against the Orioles. Diaz will get the day off after leaving Saturday's game against the Orioles with a left shoulder strain. The team has an off day Monday, so a Tuesday return is possible if Díaz can avoid the injured list. Isaac Paredes will get the start at third base Sunday. Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Not starting Sunday. Gurriel is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds. May 21, 2022 Randy Arozarena clubbed a pair of home runs and drove in three on Saturday, powering the Rays to a 6-1 victory over the Orioles. Arozarena opened the scoring in the contest with a 405-foot bomb on the first pitch that he saw from Orioles starter Kyle Bradish in the opening inning. He victimized him again his next time up -- this time for a 429-foot solo shot in the third inning that extended the Rays lead to 3-0. Arozarena finished the night 2-for-3 plus a walk and is now hitting .253/.302/.413 with four homers, 15 RBI and six stolen bases on the season. Raisel Iglesias retired the Athletics in order in the ninth inning on Saturday night, protecting a two-run lead to earn his ninth save of the season. The right-hander got Cristian Paché to fly out to center field, then struck out Elvis Andrus and Kevin Smith to end the ballgame. While he sports an elevated 4.30 ERA on the season, it comes with an outstanding 0.89 WHIP and 19/4 K/BB ratio over his 14 2/3 innings of work. He's still one of the best closers in the business. Yordan Álvarez went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI as the Astros triumphed over the Rangers 2-1 on Saturday night in Houston. Álvarez punched a one-out single into left field off of Jon Gray in the opening inning to give the Astros an early 1-0 lead. He then led off the sixth inning with a triple off of Gray, but the Astros were unable to cash him in. With the two-hit night, the 24-year-old slugger is now hitting .256/.361/.584 to go along with 12 homers and 23 RBI through 35 games on the season. Nestor Cortés yielded three runs over five innings Saturday in a win over the White Sox. Cortés recorded seven strikeouts and didn't hand out a free pass. A three-run homer off the bat of White Sox' slugger José Abreu in the third inning accounted for all of the damage against him. The 27-year-old southpaw has evolved into an upper-echelon fantasy contributor this season, compiling a microscopic 1.80 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 56/11 K/BB ratio across 45 innings (eight starts). He'll look to keep the momentum going Thursday in a road matchup against the Rays. Adolis García went 2-for-4 and drove in a run on Saturday as the Rangers fell to the Astros. García finally got the Rangers on the board with a run-scoring single off of Hector Neris in the eighth inning, cutting their deficit to one run at 2-1. That would wind up being the extent of their offense. With the two-hit effort, García is now hitting .212/.264/.404 to go along with six homers, 25 RBI and four swipes. José Abreu launched a three-run homer Saturday in the White Sox' loss to the Yankees. Abreu, who has been dealing with a non-COVID upper respiratory illness of late, connected on a Nestor Cortés cutter in the third inning, lifting a majestic three-run shot into the left field seats at Yankee Stadium. It was his fourth big fly of the season and first time he's gone deep since May 4. Yoán Moncada (leg) struck out as a pinch-hitter Saturday in the White Sox' loss to the Yankees. Moncada was scratched from the White Sox' starting lineup Saturday due to right leg soreness, but was able to come off the bench and pinch-hit in the eighth inning. He wound up striking out against right-hander Miguel Castro to open the frame. It seem likely he'll be ready to return at some point during Sunday's doubleheader. Yandy Díaz left Saturday's game against the Orioles with a left shoulder strain. Díaz is considered day-to-day after the exit. Isaac Paredes has taken over at the hot corner. There should be a further update on the 30-year-old before Sunday's finale against Baltimore. Rockies' José Iglesias: Rested during evening game. Iglesias sat down for the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mets. Iglesias went 1-for-2 in the afternoon game and drove in the Rockies' lone run. Garrett Hampson took over at shortstop in the evening contest.

  • MLB 2022 | Soler's power in Miami, Arozarena adds four hits, Blanco had first MLB hit, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 21, 2022 Yoán Moncada has been dropped to seventh in the White Sox' lineup for Saturday's game against the Yankees. It likely has something to do with the White Sox facing Yankees' lefty Nestor Cortes on Saturday afternoon, but Moncada is hitting just .200/.256/.350 with two homers in 43 plate appearances since returning from the injured list. It'll be Andrew Vaughn bumped up to the second spot in Chicago's order in this one. May 20, 2022 Randy Arozarena went 4-for-5 with a walk against the Orioles on Friday. Arozarena hit four balls at least 103 mph tonight, though since he couldn't get them into the air, he settled for all singles. At least his average is up to .245, which is higher than he's been at any point since Apr. 17. Jorge Soler went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer Friday in his return to the Marlins' lineup. Soler returned Friday evening after missing two consecutive games with back stiffness and launched a two-run homer off Braves' starter Charlie Morton in the sixth inning. It was his eighth round-tripper of the season. The back issue doesn't sound like a serious concern moving forward. Lourdes Gurriel (hamstring) was held out of the Blue Jays starting lineup on Friday. Gurriel was removed from Wednesday's game due to renewed tightness in his left hamstring. The encouraging news, is that he was available off of the bench on Friday and isn't expected to require a trip to the injured list. Expect him to return to the lineup at some point before the weekend is through. Astros' Yordan Álvarez received rest on Friday. Álvarez found himself on the bench for the first time in over a month. He's having a strong season at the plate, hitting .248/.357/.570 with 12 homers, though he's gone hitless in five of his last six games, so a day off will probably do him some good. Michael Brantley will rest his legs as the designated hitter in his absence, with Chas McCormick starting in left. Dairon Blanco's first MLB hit. Dairon Blanco became the Cuban #26 to debut this year. In the fifth inning against lefty Devin Smeltzer, Blanco laced a single down the third-base line for his first career hit, then was called out trying to advance to second base. Blanco went 1-for-2 and also had a great catch in center field in the fifth inning. The 29-year-old was originally signed by the A's in 2017, he was one of the two players the Royals received when trading lefty Jake Diekman to Oakland back in 2019. He had a rough go of it in Double-A following that trade, but Blanco has posted solid minor league numbers in 2021 (.277/.350/.441) and so far in 2022 (.263/.381/.442) between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. Blanco swiped 41 bases in 55 tries last year, and he’s out to a 13-for-13 start in that department so far in 2022. Rangers' Andy Ibánez was out of lineup on Friday. Ibánez was on the bench Friday against the Astros. Ibánez hit the bench for just the second time in the last 10 games. He's struggled significantly in the month of May, hitting just .081/.190/.081. Nathaniel Lowe and Brad Miller will handle the corner infield spots Friday. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández took seat against left-hander. Hernández didn't start Friday's game against the Brewers. Hernández drew starts in the last five games and hit .300 with a homer, five RBI and two runs, but he'll get a breather with left-hander Eric Lauer on the mound for Milwaukee.

  • MLB 2022 | Cuban Players News

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 19, 2022 Luis Robert homered and drove in four runs Thursday in a 7-4 win for the White Sox over the Royals. Robert ripped a two-run homer off of Dylan Coleman to make it 7-4 in the eighth inning. He also tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single in the sixth, and had another run-scoring knock in the third. Robert is enjoying another strong campaign thus far, and has homered six times, driven in 17 runs and slashed .301/.338/.472. Astros' Yuli Gurriel took day-off Thursday, Aledmis replaced him. Gurriel didn' start Thursday against the Rangers. Gurriel has logged multi-hit performances in four of the last six games, and he's hit .435 with three homers, two doubles, seven RBI, six runs, and a stolen base during that time. Aledmys Díaz took his place at first base and batted cleanup Thursday. Díaz went 2-for-4, a run, RBI, and a strikeout. His BA is now .226 for the year. Tony La Russa told reporters after Thursday's win over the Royals that Yoán Moncada is likely to have treatment on his leg. Moncada, 26, didn't come out of the game on Thursday, but La Russa mentioned that he felt a "tug" in his leg. Scott Merkin of MLB.com notes that the third baseman was moving around fine, but fantasy managers might just want to take a close look before Friday's game. Royals purchased the contract of OF Dairon Blanco from Triple-A Omaha. He'll fill the roster spot left vacant by Michael A. Taylor, who has been placed on the COVID-19 injured list. This will be the first taste of MLB action for Blanco. He was slashing .263/.381/.442 with five home runs and a whopping 13 stolen bases through 31 games this season at the Triple-A level. Mariners optioned LHP Roenis Elias to Triple-A Tacoma. Elias made just one relief appearance during his short stay on Seattle's active roster. Yasmani Grandal got the day off Thursday against the Royals. Reese McGuire was behind the plate and batted eighth versus Kansas City right-hander Carlos Hernández. José Abreu was the designated hitter and batted cleanup, with Gavin Sheets in at first base and hitting sixth.

  • MLB 2022 | Cuban Players News

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 18, 2022 Yandy Díaz went 3-for-4 and scored a run as the Rays triumphed over the Tigers on Wednesday. Randy Arozarena went blank. Díaz led off the game with a single off of Eduardo Rodríguez then came around to score the game's first run as Randy Arozarena drew a walk with the bases loaded. He added two more singles before the afternoon was through. With the three-hit attack, Díaz is now hitting .287/.412/.398 with three homers and nine RBI through his first 32 games of the season. On the other hand, Randy Arozarena went 0-for-3 with a walk, a RBI, and two strikeouts to end the night with a .225 BA. José Abreu went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Wednesday's loss to the Royals. Abreu picked up double No. 7 in the loss. The veteran slugger is slashing just .212/.295/.333 with three homers and 14 RBI in 35 games this season. As bad as those numbers might be, Abreu is too consistent a hitter to struggle for long, and he has shown signs of life in recent days, picking up doubles in back-to-back contests and hits in four of his last five. In the same game Yoán Moncada, Luis Robert, and Yasmani Grandal combined for 1-for-13 with 4 strikeouts and nine runners left on base. Cionel Pérez does it again. Lefty reliever Cionel Pérez was able to get a must-needed out for the Orioles on Wednesday night. Pérez came in relief of Félix Bautista with two outs and a runner in scoring position in the eighth, and the score 3-2 against. The Cuban lefty then used all his arsenal to strike out Anthony Rizzo with seven pitches, keeping the score intact. Pérez has pitched in 14 games, 11 innings with 12 strikeouts, and an ERA of 0.82 this year. Angels' Raisel Iglesias: Falters again. Iglesias (1-2) took the loss during Wednesday's 6-5 defeat at the hands of the Rangers, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit with one strikeout in one-third of an inning. Iglesias entered a 4-4 tie with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the ninth and induced a Jonah Heim strikeout to neutralize the threat. Los Angeles scored one in the top of the 10th and Iglesias stayed to finish things up, but he served up a Nathaniel Lowe walk-off homer on the very first pitch. After converting all eight save opportunities prior to Saturday, the 32-year-old has surrendered walk-off long balls in consecutive appearances that have upped his ERA from 2.13 to 4.61. Adolis García and Andy Ibáñez went hitless against the Angels. García and Ibáñez went 0-for-8 with 3 strikeouts, a walk, and nine runners left on base combined, on Wednesday's 6-5 over the Angels in 10 innings. Adolis is slashing .209/.265/.418 while Ibáñez's line is .187/.245/.242. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was removed from Wednesday's battle against the Mariners due to tightness in his left hamstring. It's not clear exactly when the injury occurred, but Gurriel was replaced by Raimel Tapia defensively to begin the sixth inning. The hamstring has been a recurring issue for Gurriel over the past few weeks, so there's a chance that it could eventually lead to a stint on the injured list. Stay tuned. Jorge Soler was held out of the Marlins lineup for the second consecutive game on Wednesday due to back stiffness. The team has a scheduled off-day on Thursday, and Marlins skipper Don Mattingly noted that he hopes the three days off in a row will clear up the issue and have the slugger ready for the weekend. The 30-year-old is hitting just .195/.287/.391 with seven homers and 18 RBI in his first 35 games with the Marlins.

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 17, 2022 Yuli Gurriel went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and three runs scored Tuesday as the Astros beat the Red Sox. In the Astros' huge top of the second inning, Gurriel contributed by hitting a 381-foot two-run home run off of Nathan Eovaldi. Though his power output has been modest to begin the campaign, Gurriel has hit all three of his home runs in his last five starts, also chipping in seven RBI and six runs scored while hitting .500. That has improved his line to .248/.287/.430 across 129 plate appearances. He's hit safely in six of his last seven games. Aroldis Chapman allowed a run in the ninth on Tuesday against the Orioles, but still earned his ninth save of the season. Chapman opened up the bottom of the ninth with a strikeout and a ground out, but after allowing two straight singles, a Ryan McKenna double drove in a run. Fortunately, Chapman got Cedric Mullins to pop out to finish the game. He's given up a run in four straight appearances. Cionel Pérez continues his good form from the bullpen. Cionel Pérez made his 13 appearances on Tuesday night against the Yankees, striking out Joey Gallo to end the seventh inning when the Yankees took a decisive 5-4 lead. Pérez has now pitched in 10 2/3 innings, has 11 strikeouts, 11 hits, and a 0.84 ERA for the year. José Abreu was out of the White Sox lineup for the second half of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals. Abreu had a walk, two hits, and drove in two runs in the early game as the White Sox won 3-0, but the veteran slugger grabbed some rest during the nightcap. Luis Robert took a turn at designated hitter. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Clubs second homer. Arozarena went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a sacrifice fly and an additional run scored during Tuesday's 8-1 win against Detroit. Arozarena now has two home runs and 11 RBI through 36 games, as he's off to a slow start in 2022. However, the 27-year-old has shown more life in May with a .274 average, seven extra-base hits and three stolen bases. José Abreu drove 2 while White Sox top Royals 3-0. Luis Robert and Yasmani Grandal went blank. Abreu hit a two-run double in a three-run fifth inning, to continue his climbing to a better offensive season. The Cuban first baseman went 2-for-3 on Tuesday's first doubleheader game and is now slashing .211/.349/.328. Meanwhile, Luis Robert and Yasmani Grandal went 0-for-7 combined, with 9 runners left on base. Rockies' José Iglesias: Did not start on Wednesday. Iglesias did not start Wednesday versus the Giants. Iglesias got a breather Wednesday after starting the first two games of the series, going 1-for-7 in those contests. Garrett Hampson got the start at shortstop and batted eighth in the series finale. Marlins' Jorge Soler: Receives maintenance day. Soler was out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Nationals. Soler, is sitting for only the third time through the Marlins' first 36 games of the season. Soler should check back into the lineup for the series finale Wednesday, when he'll put a seven-game hitting streak on the line.

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 16, 2022 Luis Robert went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in the 10th inning in the White Sox 5-3 victory over the Royals in extra frames on Monday. With the game tied at 3-3, Robert crushed a two-run shot off a normally effective Scott Barlow to give the White Sox a 5-3 cushion and ultimately an extra-innings victory. It wasn't a walk-off since the game was in Kansas City, but it's the second "game-winning" hit in three games after Robert's walk-off single against the Yankees on Saturday. It's the fifth homer of the season for the star outfielder, and that homer along with a single has him slashing .308/.345/.477 over the first five weeks of the season. Roenis Elias allowed one run over an inning of work Monday in his season debut against the Blue Jays. It was Elias's first appearance since September 5, 2019. The 33-year-old left-hander underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery back in March, 2020 and finally made it back to the majors. Yennier Cano wins first MLB game. Can, who made his MLB debut last Wednesday without throwing an official major league pitch, won his first MLB game Monday night against the A's. Cano came in relief of starter Chris Archer in the fifth inning, completing two scoreless innings of one-hit and two strikeouts. Cano threw 25 pitches, 18 of them for strikes, facing seven hitters. Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run homer while going 2-for-5 Monday in an extra-innings win over the Royals. Grandal blasted a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give the White Sox a 3-0 lead. It's only the second homer of the season for the backstop, and fantasy managers have to be thrilled to see some power from a player that is still struggling with a .255 slugging percentage. Grandal got off to a rocky start last year as well, and it'd be an upset if he didn't finish the year as one of the top catching options in baseball again. Astros' Aledmys Díaz: Sits in favor of Dubon. Díaz was out of the lineup for Monday's game in Boston, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Diaz took a seat in favor of the newly-acquired Mauricio Dubon after starting at shortstop in each of the Astros' three contests over the weekend. Díaz, who recently overcame a nagging undisclosed injury of his own, went 4-for13 with a run and an RBI during the Astros' series victory in Washington. White Sox's Oscar Colás: Returns to action at High-A. Colas (wrist) went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and an additional run in his return from the 7-day injured list Sunday in High-A Winston-Salem's 5-1 win over Rome. Back in action for the first time in two and a half weeks, Colas picked up right where he left off prior to suffering the wrist injury. The 23-year-old outfielder is now slashing .312/.376/.519 in his first season of the affiliated ball and could soon be in store for a promotion to Double-A Birmingham. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was not in the Blue Jays' starting lineup for Monday's game against the Mariners. It looks like it was a routine off day for Gurriel Jr., who has started 17 consecutive games since April 27. Raimel Tapia draws the start in left field Monday evening against Seattle. Mariners purchased the contract of LHP Roenis Elías from Triple-A Tacoma. Elías joins the Mariners as a roster replacement for Drew Steckenrider, who has been placed on the restricted list, for the team's series in Toronto. The 33-year-old left-hander underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery back in March, 2020 and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2019. Rangers' Andy Ibáñez: Monday off. Ibáñez was out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Angels. Ibáñez took a seat after starting in each of the previous five games while going 1-for-15 at the plate. Brad Miller, who typically plays left field, played at third base in Ibáñez's stead.

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 15, 2022 Adolis García launched two homers and collected five RBI on Sunday, powering the Rangers to a 7-1 victory over the Red Sox. García put the Rangers ahead with a three-run blast off Red Sox' righty reliever Ryan Brasier in the sixth inning. He also added a two-run shot off Tyler Danish in the eighth inning to record his fourth career multi-homer effort. It was the first time he's left the yard since April 29. The 29-year-old outfielder has gotten off to an ice-cold start this season, hitting .205/.261/.418 with 20 runs scored, six homers, 23 RBI and four stolen bases across 134 plate appearances. José Abreu went 0-for-4 and struck out twice Sunday in the loss to the Yankees. Abreu is 1-for-26 in his last six games, dropping him back under the Mendoza Line for the season. He was unlucky early in April and then put up solid numbers for a couple of weeks, but this is a rather ugly slump right now. Yuli Gurriel went 3-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday, leading the Astros to a 8-0 victory over the Nationals. Gurriel capped off the three-hit performance with a sixth-inning solo shot to left field off Nationals' starter Patrick Corbin. The 37-year-old veteran infielder has racked up 10 hits, including a pair of homers, over his last five games since May 10. Orioles' Yusniel Díaz: Aggravates hamstring injury Díaz was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list with a right hamstring strain Saturday, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports. Díaz returned to action in early May after missing several weeks with a hamstring injury, but he'll head back to the injured list after he recently aggravated the issue. Néstor Cortés limited the White Sox to one run and three hits over eight innings in the Yankees' 5-1 win Sunday. Cortés allowed three hits today after flirting with the no-no last time out. He's given up a total of 23 hits and six earned runs in 40 innings on the season. That's quite a contrast from his past stints with other teams; between his time with the Orioles in 2018 and the Mariners in 2020, he gave up 22 hits and 17 earned runs in 12 1/3 innings.
