  • MLB 2022 | Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: two hits, scored on a slow Monday for Cuban players

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 6, 2022 Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: Added two hits on Monday. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was 2-for-4 and scored a run on Monday's 8-0 win over the Royals. The Cuban outfielder batted eighth in Jay's lineup, assuming fewer responsibilities and allowing him to focus on his mechanics. The change seems to be working for the younger Gurriel, who is now compiling a slash line of .348/.423/.348 during his last seven games. Yordan Álvarez and Yuli Gurriel hitless on Monday. Yordan and Yuli didn't collect any hits on Monday's 7-4 loss to the Mariners. Yordan went 0-for-4 with a walk, while Gurriel was 0-for-3, walked, and a strikeout. Yordan is having a tremendous season showing a slash line of .288/.386/.610 with 16 HR and 34 RBI, while on the opposite side, Gurriel is trying to get back on track having a terrible 2022 season with a .221 BA, 3 HR and only 15 RBI through 181 at-bats. Padres activated RHP Michel Báez from the 60-day injured list; optioned him to Double-A San Antonio. Báez will remain at San Antonio for now as he continues to knock some rust off following a long road back from Tommy John surgery. The tall right-hander holds a 2.51 ERA and 15/4 K/BB ratio over 14 1/3 rehab innings to this point. Vladimir Gutiérrez will be shut down for two weeks after being diagnosed with a Grade 1 UCL tear in his right elbow. It's the least severe of the grades, but obviously, any UCL damage isn't great. Gutiérrez has an ugly 7.61 ERA on the season. Padres activated LHP Adrián Morejón from the 60-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A El Paso. Morejón is fully recovered from Tommy John surgery, but the Padres want him to get some more work in in the minors before he rejoins the major league roster. The left-hander is unscored upon in his last five rehab appearances, boasting an 8/2 K/BB ratio and just one hit allowed over seven innings.

  • MLB 2022 | Yordan adds homer #16, Adolis homers again, Raicel Iglesias took a hard loss, and more

Jun 5, 2022 Yordan Álvarez went 3-for-4 with a homer and a triple against the Royals on Sunday. Álvarez went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a triple and three runs scored in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Royals. Álvarez continues to rack up hits at a rapid rate -- he's 17-for-35 (.486) in his last nine games with six extra-base hits in that span. He came up a double shy of the cycle Sunday, which was his second three-hit effort in his last three games. For the season, he's batting .295 with a 1.015 OPS while adding 16 homers, 34 RBI, 35 runs scored, five doubles, and two triples through 201 plate appearances. Álvarez has four homers and eight RBI in his last six games, and he's raised his average from .247 to .285 over his last seven games. He's tied for second in the majors with his 16 homers, putting him five back of Aaron Judge. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Drives in pair. Grandal went 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI on Sunday against the Rays. Grandal has shown very few signs of breaking out of a season-long slump, and his RBI on Sunday was his first in his last nine starts. In that span, he had collected just two hits in 33 at-bats. Overall, Grandal is hitting .163/.274/.213 across 186 plate appearances. Royals' Ronald Bolaños: Sent down Saturday. Bolaños was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Saturday. Bolaños returned from the COVID-19 injured list in late May, but he'll lose his spot on the active roster after he allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one in one-third of an inning Friday against the Astros. The right-hander's demotion makes room on the major-league roster for Kris Bubic, who was recalled to start Saturday against Houston. Adolis García went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Mariners. García hit a 109 mph solo home run off of George Kirby with two men out in the bottom of the second. The 29-year-old outfielder has hit a home run in back-to-back games. He's added a .229/.266/.448 slash line with 36 RBI, 29 runs scored, six stolen bases, two triples, 10 homers, and 10 doubles in 51 games. Raisel Iglesias surrendered a game-tying homer Sunday in a blown save against the Phillies. Iglesias (1-4) allowed three runs on three over 1.1 innings against the Phillies on Sunday. Iglesias was summoned for his first relief appearance in 10 days to attempt to put out a bases-loaded fire in the eighth inning. He struck out Rhys Hoskins, but wound up surrendering a game-tying grand slam to Bryce Harper with two outs in the frame. It was just his second blown save this season. The 32-year-old righty came back out to guard a one-run lead in the ninth inning, but was pulled after allowing two hits and recording just two outs. His replacement, Jimmy Herget promptly served up a walk-off homer to Bryson Stott. Iglesias was charged with his fourth loss of the year (all since May 14) while his ERA jumped to 4.91 through 18.1 innings. Rangers optioned INF Andy Ibáñez to Triple-A Round Rock. Ibáñez has been shipped back to the minors to make room for Steele Walker on the Rangers' active roster. The 29-year-old infielder has hit just .216/.272/.276 with one homer and three steals across 125 plate appearances. Tampa Bay's Randy Arozarena: Had his second triple of the year. Randy Arozarena was 1-for-3 on Sunday's 6-5 loss to the White Sox. The only hit for the flashy Cuban outfielder was his second triple of the year. Arozarena, the reigning American League Rookie of the Year, is slashing .262/.309/.431 for the season. Meanwhile, in the same game, Yandy Díaz went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and a walk, lifting his BA to .282 this year. The Gurriel's brothers. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (Blue Jays) and Yulieski Gurriel (Astros), went 1-for-4 each on Sunday against the Twins and Royals, respectively. The Gurriel brothers are having an offensively difficult season. Gurriel Jr. is slashing .247/.312/.347 with 2 HR and 20 RBI this year, while Yuli - the reigning batting champion of the American League - is just hitting .225 for the year. There is still time for both players to get hot this season, but there is plenty of fans concerned about their performance this year. Luis Robert went 3-for-5 on Sunday. Luis Robert went 3-for-5 on Sunday's 6-5 win against the Rays. Robert added his double #5 of the season and RBI #20. He left two man on bases but lifted his BA to .296 for the season. Reds placed RHP Vladimir Gutiérrez on the 15-day injured list with right forearm soreness. Gutiérrez was ejected from the Reds' starting rotation earlier this season and has pitched out of the bullpen twice over the last week. It sounds like he could be out for awhile. There should be some clarity on his status at some point next week. Chicago White Sox's José Abreu: Getting better. José Abreu is getting better every day. After a difficult Saturday when he went blank against Tampa Bay pitchers, the Cuban first baseman went 2-for-4 on Sunday's 6-5 win over the Rays. Abreu walked, scored, and added a few points to his BA which is now .255 for the year. Yoán Moncada was not in the White Sox' starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays. Moncada has dealt with a series of lingering leg issues this season, but his absence on Sunday didn't appear to be injury-related at the moment. Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Day off Sunday. Iglesias was not in Sunday's lineup against Atlanta. Iglesias is hitting .325 with zero home runs and one stolen base over his last 10 games.

  • MLB 2022 | Adolis García homered, Arozarena's speed in display, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 4, 2022 Adolis García smashed a go-ahead three-run homer off of Marco Gonzales in the fourth inning on Saturday, propelling the Rangers to a 3-2 victory over the Mariners in Seattle. García jumped on a first-pitch changeup from Gonzales and deposited it into the left-field seats to give the Rangers a 3-0 advantage that they'd never relinquish. He struck out in his other two at-bats in the ballgame, finishing the day 1-for-3. On the season, García is now hitting .228/.267/.437 to go along with nine homers, two triples, 10 doubles, 35 RBI, 28 runs scored, and six stolen bases in 50 games. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Swipes two bags Saturday. Arozarena went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases Saturday in a loss to the White Sox. The Rays had only four hits in the contest collectively -- all singles -- and Arozarena was responsible for half of them. The outfielder converted the base knocks into a pair of stolen bases, marking the first time this season he has swiped multiple bags in a game. Arozarena is tied for sixth in the league with 10 thefts on the campaign. Meanwhile, Yandi Díaz went 1-for-2 with 2 walks in the game. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had a great Saturday afternoon. Gurriel Jr. went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, a run scored and a walk on Saturday's 12-3 win against the Twins. Gurriel Jr., who is trying to get his season back on track, is slashing .247/.314/.349 with 2 HR, 20 RBI but 33 SO this season. Andy Ibáñez was out of the Rangers' lineup on Saturday. Ibáñez, who is battling to get his numbers higher this season, was out of the Rangers' lineup for Saturday matchup against the Mariners. Yordan Álvarez went 1-for-2 and Yuli Gurriel went hitless on Saturday against the Royals. In a 6-0 loss against the Royals, Yordan Álvarez went 1-for-2 with 2 walks, while Yulieski Gurriel's struggles continued. Gurriel went o-for-4 with a strikeout, and during his last 15 games, the Cuban infielder's BA is just .170 (9-for-53). Johan Oviedo did a serviceable job in a spot start against the Cubs on Saturday, giving up three runs on eight hits over his five innings of work. The right-hander walked three and struck out five on the afternoon, earning a loss for his efforts. The Cubs scratched out a run against him on a fielder's choice in the second inning, then tacked on two more in the fifth -- including a solo homer by Frank Schwindel. It's likely that the 24-year-old hurler will head back to Triple-A Memphis following this start. The White Sox Cuban combination went blank on Saturday 3-2 win against the Rays. While Luis Robert was back in the White Sox lineup last Wednesday and had three games with at least one single, on Saturday things didn't go well for the Cuban combination of Robert, Yoán Moncada, José Abreu, and Yasmani Grandal. They went hitless against the Rays in a 3-2 win. They combined 0-for-14 with 3 strikeouts on an unusual afternoon/night for them. Yadiel Hernández saw action on Saturday against the Reds. Hernández, after a day off on Friday, played left-field for the Nats and batted sixth. Yadiel went 1-for-5 with a run scored and 4 strikeouts in a 10-8 win against the Reds. His slash line is now .283/.331/.428 with 4 HR and 23 RBI.

  • MLB 2022 | Aledmys homered, Abreu heating up, Álvarez celebrated new contract with HR#15, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 3, 2022 Aledmys Díaz went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and an RBI single in Friday's win over the Royals. Díaz hit a 413-foot two-run home run in the top of the second and in the top of the fourth, he smacked an RBI single off of Brady Singer, extending the Astros' lead. The versatile 31-year-old is slashing .233/.282/.330 with three home runs over 110 plate appearances. Yordan Álvarez went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run Friday as the Astros beat the Royals. Looking to extend the Astros' lead in the top of the fifth, Álvarez swung at a first-pitch sinker from Brady Singer and sent it over the center-field wall for a two-run home run. He signed a six-year, $115 million contract extension just a few hours before this performance. The young slugger has a .281/.373/.593 slash line with 15 home runs over 193 plate appearances. Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that the Astros and Yordan Álvarez have agreed to a six-year, $115 million contract extension. Álvarez had been slated for arbitration for the first time this offseason, but this deal will buy out through arbitration as well as three free-agent years. It's the largest-ever contract for a designated hitter. Álvarez seems to have put his past knee issues behind him and has been one of the best sluggers in baseball over the past two seasons, batting .276/.351/.541 with 47 home runs over 189 games. José Abreu went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Friday as the White Sox fell to the Rays. Facing Shane McClanahan with one out in the top of the sixth, Abreu ambushed a first-pitch slider and sent it 446 feet to deep center field. The first baseman has logged a 12-game hitting streak, going 18-for-45 (.400) in that span with four homers, nine RBI, and eight runs scored. The extended surge has helped get his season on track -- he's up to a .256/.348/.433 slash line, seven long balls, 23 RBI, 24 runs scored, and 11 doubles in 48 contests overall. He's heating up. Red's Vladimir Gutiérrez: To the bullpen. With Mike Minor back in the Reds' rotation, RHP Vladimir Gutiérrez was finally sent back to the bullpen. Gutiérrez had his first relief appearance this Friday allowing three hits including Lane Thomas' homer. Gutiérrez had a strikeout and a walk. His ERA is now 7.61 for the year. Yandy Díaz went 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored in Friday's win over the White Sox. He came into the game with a 15.6 percent walk rate and he has a career 12.4 percent walk rate, so the three walks are no surprise. He came around to score after hitting a one-out double in the bottom of the first. And in the bottom of the seventh, Ji-Man Choi drove him in following his five-pitch walk. Diaz has an impressive .407 OBP through 177 plate appearances. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: On bench versus lefty. Hernández took a seat Friday against the Reds. Hernández got a breather as the Nationals took on left-hander Mike Minor on Friday. Royals designated OF Dairon Blanco for assignment. With Michael Taylor returning from the COVID-19 injured list on Friday, someone needed to go from the 40-man roster and it looks like Blanco was the odd-man out. The 29-year-old went 2-for-7 (.286) with a run scored, two RBI and a stolen base over five games during his brief stay with the Royals. Cardinals recalled RHP Johan Oviedo from Triple-A Memphis. Oviedo was available in relief Friday but could also be under consideration for a start during Saturday's doubleheader. He holds a 5.58 ERA and 51/23 K/BB ratio over 50 innings for Memphis this season. Randy Arozarena went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's win over the White Sox. In a productive bottom of the first, Arozarena hit a 362-foot two-run home run over the right-field wall, bringing the score to 4-0. All six of his home runs have come since May 9th, and he's hit two since June 1st. Royals optioned RHP Ronald Bolaños to Triple-A Omaha. Bolaños has been jettisoned to make room for lefty Kris Bubic to be summoned Saturday for a spot start against the Astros. The 25-year-old righty reliever has recorded a pedestrian 4.42 ERA, 1.75 WHIP, and 12/12 K/BB ratio across 18 1/3 innings (eight appearances) this season.

  • MLB 2022 | Néstor was brilliant again, Luis Robert is producing, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 2, 2022 Yankees' Néstor Cortés: Seven scoreless innings. Cortés (5-1) allowed five hits and two walks while striking out seven across seven scoreless innings to earn the win in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Angels. Cortés limited the typically powerful Angels lineup to one extra-base hit, and he has now allowed one or fewer earned runs in seven of his 10 starts on the season. Perhaps even more impressive has been Cortés' consistent ability to work deep into games, as he has completed seven or more innings in four of his last five outings. Cortés now owns a 1.50 ERA with a 68: 14 K:BB across 60 frames on the campaign. Luis Robert drove in two runs and stole a base Thursday in a loss to the Blue Jays. Robert went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a double, a stolen base, and a run scored in an 8-3 loss Thursday in Toronto. Robert's eighth-inning double plated two and chased starter Alek Manoah from the game. He later stole third base and came around to score. The centerfielder hit second in the Chicago lineup and has recorded hits in each of his games since returning from the COVID-19 injured list. The 24-year-old has played 159 games at the major-league level and compiled a .293/.340/.495 batting line with 30 homers and 22 stolen bases. Yandy Díaz drove the decisive run, while Randy Arozarena was hitless in Rays' 3-1 win over the Rangers. Yandy Díaz went 2-for-4, walked, and had a decisive RBI on Thursday's win 3-1 over the Rangers. The third baseman singled on a sharp ground ball to left field in the third inning, driving home Manuel Margot with Tampa's second and decisive run of the game. Díaz line is now .266/.393/.350 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. Meanwhile, Randy Arozarena had a hitless game against the Rangers, going 0-for-5 and leaving two runners on base. The charismatic outfielder is slashing .251/.298/.403 this year. Yadiel Hernández had one hit on Thursday's 8-1 loss to the Reds. Hernández, who batted sixth in the Nats' lineup, went 1-for-3 with a walk, seeing his BA go down to .286 for the season. Yadiel continues to be an important part of the Nats, especially for a team that is in rebuilding mode. Marlins' Jorge Soler: No much power on Thursday. The Cuban outfielder went 1-for-4 on Thursday's 3-0 win over the Giants. Soler left two runners in scoring position and struck out once, lowering his batting average to .220 for the season. Cionel Pérez allowed one run on Thursday. Cionel Pérez, who has been brilliant on his bullpen outings, didn't allow hits on Thursday against the Mariners, but he allowed one earned run while walking two. The lefty reliever suffered with his command in the sixth inning, getting one out while throwing 11 pitches, only 3 of them for strikes. His ERA went up to 1.08, while his WHIP should improve showing an only decent a 1.44. Yoán Moncada told reporters after Thursday's game that he expects to be back in the lineup Friday against the Rays. Moncada was back in the lineup Thursday after dealing with his left quad injury, and it's good news that the 27-year-old expects to be able to play in back-to-back games. This could be an injury that bothers Moncada all season, so don't be surprised if there are instances when he is out of the lineup to keep him healthy through the summer. In his comeback game, Moncada went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter. Gurriel was not in the starting lineup for Thursday's series finale against the White Sox, but went 0-for-1 pinch-hitting in the eighth inning. Gurriel took a seat after starting six games in a row, going 7-for-19 with three doubles, six RBI, and a run in those contests. Raimel Tapia started in left field and batted eighth as the Blue Jays swept the White Sox. José Abreu and Yasmani Grandal combined 1-for-7 on Thursday against the Blue Jays. Abreu went 1-for-4 with a strikeout, while Grandal's struggles continue. The catcher, back in the lineup since May 31, went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a walk. In his last seven games, Grandal is 1-for-27 with 13 strikeouts. This year the Cuban catcher is slashing a poor .160/.270/.213 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. Blue Jays RHP prospect Yosver Zulueta allowed just a hit over five scoreless innings on Thursday for High-A Vancouver. Zulueta, 24, struck out five in the outing, and issued one walk. It’s the third start for the Cuban after being promoted from Dunedin, and his ERA improves to 0.66 over 13 2/3 frames, while his overall K/BB ratio at two levels is an outstanding 41/6 over 25 2/3 innings. Zululeta has had a couple of season-ending injuries in his short time since signing out of Cuba, as he missed all of 2020 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and then tore his ACL covering a base in Low-A Dunedin after facing just one batter. He still has an electric fastball that can touch 99 mph, and his curveball is good enough to call a competent second offering. He appears to have taken a massive step forward in control, so now the question is if there’s a third pitch here that’s good enough for him to start. If there is, Zulueta has a chance to be a mid-rotation arm, but that fastball and curve could be lights out in relief if not. Twins recalled RHP Yennier Cano from Triple-A St. Paul. Cano will return to the Minnesota bullpen ahead of Thursday's series finale at Detroit. The 28-year-old reliever has surrendered a whopping 11 earned runs over his first 7 1/3 major league innings this season.

  • MLB 2022 | Yordan is unstoppable, Cionel wins, Arozarena homers, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. June 1, 2022 Yordan Álvarez hit a decisive, bases-clearing double in the ninth inning of the Astros' comeback win over the Athletics. Alex Bregman was walked with the bases loaded to force in a run and pull the Astros to within one. That's when A's manager Mark Kotsay summoned left-hander Sam Selman to face Álvarez, who drilled an 0-2 pitch into the right-center field gap to cash in three runs. It pushed the slugger's season RBI total up to 31. Álvarez also had a single earlier in the game, giving him four straight multi-hit efforts. Jorge Soler went 3-for-6 and scored three runs as the Marlins demolished the Rockies in the first game of Wednesday's twin bill. Soler also drove in a pair of runs in the ballgame -- one with an RBI double in the sixth inning and another with a run-scoring single in the seventh. With the three-hit effort, the 30-year-old slugger is now slashing .224/.313/.476 with 11 homers and 27 RBI on the season. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Picks up win Wednesday. Pérez (4-0) allowed a hit and struck out one over 1.1 scoreless innings, earning the win Wednesday over the Mariners. Starter Kyle Bradish couldn't complete five innings, so Pérez entered the game and got credit for the win. The 26-year-old reliever has earned all four of his wins and two of his four holds in his last 10 outings, and he hasn't allowed any runs in his last seven games. Overall, the southpaw has a 0.55 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB across 16.1 innings. José Iglesias went 1-for-4 and drove in the Rockies lone run as they were crushed by the Marlins in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader. Iglesias finally got the Rockies on the board with an RBI single in the ninth inning, but it did nothing more than putting a Band-Aid on a stab wound -- cutting their deficit to 13 runs at 14-1. Iglesias is having a productive season at the dish for the Rockies, slashing 315/.364/.385, though that comes with zero homers, 16 RBI and only two stolen bases. Randy Arozarena went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 11-inning win over the Rangers. Arozarena made his statistical mark on the contest courtesy of a solo home run off Jon Gray with one out in the seventh inning. The 27-year-old outfielder is batting .258/.305/.414 with five homers, 21 RBI and seven steals. While Arozarena has been up-and-down with the bat this season, he has chipped in nicely on the stolen base front. Arozarena's career-best mark for steals is 20, set during the 2021 season. He could certainly challenge that mark with the way he is swiping bags early in the 2022 campaign. Rangers' Adolis García: Notches sixth steal. García went 1-for-5 with a stolen base and an RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Rays. García struck out three times in the contest, but in the eighth inning had a stolen base and in the 10th-inning a run-scoring single. This was the second straight game during which the outfielder stole a base, and he is up to six thefts on the season. He's batting only .226, but the theft total and his eight homers and 32 RBI have kept him relevant for the team. White Sox's Jose Abreu: Slugs sixth homer. Abreu went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run Wednesday against the Blue Jays. Abreu took Hyun Jin Ryu (forearm) yard in the fourth inning to record his sixth home run of the season. Three of those long balls have come in his last 10 starts, and Abreu has also tallied eight RBI and seven runs scored in that span. As a result of this hot stretch, Abreu has raised his line to .250/.343/.419 across 198 plate appearances on the campaign. Yoán Moncada struck out as a pinch-hitter Wednesday against the Blue Jays. Moncada has now missed basically a full week of games due to lingering left quad discomfort, though he did come off the bench on Sunday against the Cubs. Jake Burger played third base and batted fifth for the White Sox on Wednesday evening in Toronto. Later in the game, Moncada struck out as a pinch-hitter. Consider him questionable for Thursday. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Took seat Wednesday. Grandal was out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. Even though Grandal served as the White Sox's designated hitter the last two games rather than starting behind the plate, he received a maintenance day Wednesday. Grandal's move to the bench may also have something to do with his ongoing slump at the plate; over his last six games, he's gone 1-for-24 with 11 strikeouts and four walks. Wednesday's game between the Angels and Yankees in New York was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday, with the first game starting at 1:00 PM EST. Wednesday's scheduled starters -- Nestor Cortés Jr. and Reid Detmers -- will presumably pitch in one of Thursday's games.

  • MLB 2022 | Adolis homered, Chapman still absent, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 31, 2022 Adolis García went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 3-0 win over the Rays. Three batters after Corey Seager hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth, García hit a 111.4 mph (traveled .440 feet according to Statcast) two-run home run off of Ryan Yarbrough. García went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a stolen base in a 3-0 win Tuesday over the Rays. He added a stolen base in the eighth. It was his fifth two-hit performance in his last seven contests, going 10-for-31 with six extra-base hits in that span. His batting average will likely continue to underwhelm, but he's on track to finish with both double-digit home runs and stolen bases for the second year in a row. Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) played catch Tuesday for the first time since landing on the injured list, open to sharing closer role. It's a step in the right direction, but Chapman figures to be eased along slowly as he recovers from lingering discomfort in his left Achilles tendon. There's no set date yet for when he might begin mound workouts. Clay Holmes is currently serving as the primary closer for the Yankees. On Tuesday Chapman was asked if he'd be OK sharing the closer role with Holmes and Chapman said: "It’s simple: if we’re winning, it doesn’t matter where I’m at in the bullpen]." Yordan Álvarez went 2-for-4 while Yulieski Gurriel added a single. On Tuesday's night Yordan went 2-for-4 against the A's in a 3-1 win by the Astros. Yordan left three runners on base but scored once, and now he is slashing .266/.361/.570 with 14 HR and 28 RBI for the year. Meanwhile, Gurriel went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts and his BA is .218. José Abreu lifting his BA. Grandal hitless. Abreu keeps getting better every week. On Tuesday's night the veteran first baseman went 2-for-3 and walked twice, in a 6-5 loss to the Blue Jays. Abreu' slash line is now .244/.340/.399. The Cuban infielder went 26-for-99 (.263) in the month of May, a big difference with his .217 (15-for-69) BA in April. In the same game Yasmani Grandal, DH and batting leadoff, went 0-for-5 with 3 strikeouts. Grandal's BA is a low .163. Yadiel Hernández isn't hitting .300 anymore. Yadiel Hernández went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Tuesday night against the Mets, in a 10-0 loss to the division rivals. Hernández, a consistent hitter in the Nats' lineup, is now hitting .291 for the season. Roenis Elías threw two scoreless innings. Lefty reliever Roenis Elías threw two-scoreless innings against the Orioles on Tuesday's night, in a 10-0 win for the Mariners. Elías allowed a single and struck out two, reducing his ERA to a season best 3.00. Elías' contract was picked up for the Mariners back on April 16, but three days later he went back to the Minors. On May 27 Elías was once again selected by the Mariners from the Tacoma Rainiers Minor League team. The 33-year-old reliever has pitched in only two games this season. Luis Robert was not in the White Sox' starting lineup for Tuesday's series opener against the Blue Jays. Robert was activated from the COVID-19 injured list prior to Tuesday's contest, but won't return to the White Sox' starting lineup until Wednesday. Yoán Moncada (quad) remained absent from the White Sox' starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays. Moncada hasn't started for the White Sox since last Wednesday due to a left quad issue. He missed his fourth straight contest Tuesday evening against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

  • MLB 2022 | Yordan shows his power, a lot of rest for Cuban players on Monday

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 30, 2022 Yordan Álvarez hit a pair of solo homers Monday in the win over the A's. Álvarez hit 469- and 444-foot bombs today, with the second of those coming in a lefty-lefty matchup against A.J. Puk. Álvarez took Paul Blackburn deep in the first inning to give the Astros an early 1-0 lead before later launching another solo shot in the eighth frame. He now has 14 homers on the season and the two long balls ended a 10-game homerless streak for the slugger. He's tied with Mookie Betts for second in the majors with 14 homers, placing him four behind Aaron Judge. Álvarez has notched three multi-hit games over his last four contests, raising his batting average from .246 to .260 over that stretch. Yandy Díaz was not in the Rays' starting lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers. Díaz got a break after making five consecutive starts following a two-game absence due to a left shoulder strain. Jorge Soler added double number eight. Soler went 1-for-4 on Monday's 7-1 loss to the Rockies. Soler added his double #8 of the year and is now hitting .215 for the season. Astros' Yulieski Gurriel: Hitless against the A's. Gurriel went 0-for-3 against the A's on Monday, in a game that was all about Yordan Álvarez. Gurriel, batting 5th, walked and saw his BA reach a low .217 for the year. Gurriel is the American League defending batting champion and is expected to get better offensively for the second half of the season. Rangers' Andy Ibáñez: Slated for a rest day. Ibáñez didn't start Monday's game against the Rays. Ibáñez got the night off after starting the last two contests for Texas, collecting five hits including a pair of doubles and an RBI over that brief stretch. Josh Smith got the start at the hot corner and batted eighth with Ibáñez on the bench. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: On the bench against a southpaw. Hernández didn't start Monday's game against the Mets. Left-hander David Peterson was on the mound for the Mets on Monday, so Hernández retreated to the bench for the third time in the last four games. Lane Thomas started in left field and batted sixth. Rangers' Adolis García: Got night off. García wasn't in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Rays. García took a rest day after starting each of his club's last 14 games. Eli White received an opportunity to man center field in García's absence. Rockies' José Iglesias rested on Monday. Iglesias was not in the starting lineup on Monday's matchup with the Marlins, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reported. Iglesias got a breather after starting eight straight games, extending his hit streak to 10 contests over that stretch while notching two doubles, three RBI, a run, and two stolen bases. Garrett Hampson started at shortstop and batting eighth Monday.

  • MLB 2022 | Gurriel Jr. drove five, Soler went yard TWICE, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 29, 2022 Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Drives in five. Gurriel went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, five RBI and two walks in Sunday's 11-10 win over the Angels. Gurriel accounted for nearly half of the Blue Jays' run production Sunday. This was just the third time he's had multiple RBI in a game all season. The 29-year-old has logged a .238/.299/.351 slash line with two home runs, 18 RBI, 14 runs scored and a pair of stolen bases through 167 plate appearances. A couple of multi-hit efforts in his last three games seem to have stabilized his playing time after it started to slip in the last week. Jorge Soler clobbered two homers and collected three RBI on Sunday in the Marlins' loss to the Braves. Soler put the Marlins on the scoreboard with a gargantuan 422-foot solo shot to center field against Braves' starter Max Fried in the opening frame. He followed it up with a two-run shot off righty reliever Jackson Stephens with two outs in the seventh inning. It was his first multi-homer effort of the 2022 campaign. The 30-year-old slugger has been on a tear lately, walloping eight homers in his last 16 games since May 7. Rangers' Andy Ibáñez: Collects two more hits. Ibáñez went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a run scored in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Atheltics. Ibáñez is emerging from a three-week slump and has hit safely in three straight games, going 6-for-9 with two doubles, a walk, three RBI and three runs scored over the last three. The 29-year-old infielder, who posted a .277 average in 76 games during his MLB debut in 2021, is up to .214 through 37 contests this season. Ibáñez's expected outcome for average is slightly higher than his real-world results. Yordan Álvarez went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in Sunday's win over the Mariners. Yoán Moncada (quad) grounded out as a pinch-hitter Sunday against the Cubs. Moncada was out of the starting lineup for a third straight game due to quad soreness. He remains day-to-day. White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Sunday that Luis Robert has made significant improvement and will make the upcoming trip to Toronto. La Russa added whether he plays Tuesday against the Blue Jays will depend on how much fatigue he has while ramping up. The talented 24-year-old outfielder has been out this week on the COVID-19 injured list. Randy Arozarena was not in the Rays starting lineup Sunday against the Yankees. Arozarena got the day off for Sunday's series finale against the Yankees. Brett Phillips got the start in right field with Manuel Margot sliding over to left. Arozarena has turned this around, producing an .874 OPS with four homers in May after putting up a .507 mark in April. May 28, 2022 Adolis García went 2-for-6 with a solo home run Saturday as the Rangers took down the Athletics. Right after Corey Seager went yard in the top of the third, García blasted a 402-foot solo home run to left-center field, extending the Rangers' lead. The slugging outfielder has five multi-hit performances over his last seven games. Randy Arozarena went 1-for-4 with a soft RBI single Saturday as the Rays defeated the Yankees. Stepping up to the plate with men on first and second base in the bottom of the sixth, Arozarena blooped a 64.5 mph single to left field that drove in Ji-Man Choi. He's hitting .309 with four home runs and four stolen bases in May (97 at-bats). Yandy Díaz went 1-for-3 with an infield single and a walk in Saturday's win over the Yankees. With two out and first and third base occupied in the bottom of the seventh, Díaz chopped an infield single towards third base that scored Francisco Mejía and gave the Rays a late one-run lead. He's slashing .264/.387/.357 with three home runs across 155 plate appearances. José Iglesias knocked in the go-ahead run while going 3-for-4 Saturday in a 3-2 win over the Nationals in the second game of a doubleheader. With the score tied 2-2, Iglesias poked a single to left to score C.J. Cron and give the Rockies a 3-2 cushion, and ultimately a win. The infielder singled two more times in the game, and it ups his average on the season to .317. He won't contribute in many (any) other categories much, but Iglesias has proven he can help in the average category. Yadiel Hernández homered in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday in a loss to the Rockies. Hernández tied the game at 2-2 with a solo homer in the sixth off Chad Kuhl. The outfielder has gone deep four times, and while he hasn't had nearly the success in May that he did in April, he still has a solid slash of .307/.350/.472 slash on the season. Expect a good amount of up-and-down from Hernández for the remainder of 2022. Vladimir Gutiérrez gave up six hits, struck out four batters, and gave up one run for his first win of the season on Saturday against the Giants in five innings of work. Gutiérrez has struggled to replicate his 2021 success so far but held the Giants to only one earned run on Saturday afternoon. Since returning to the rotation, the 26-year-old right-hander has been respectable giving up five runs over nine innings of work while striking out nine batters. He is slated to face the Nationals in Great American Ballpark on Friday and is a streaming option in only the deepest of fantasy leagues. Mets optioned RHP Yoan López to Triple-A Syracuse. After serving a one-game suspension, López is headed back to Syracuse as the Mets needed some outfield help with Brandon Nimmo's wrist injury. He should see time again in the Mets bullpen this year. Twins optioned RHP Yennier Canó to Triple-A St. Paul. Canó heads back to the minors to allow the Twins to bring up a fresh bullpen arm ahead of Saturday's showdown against the Royals. The 28-year-old rookie right-hander has allowed 11 runs on 12 hits with a 7/4 K/BB ratio across 7 1/3 innings (six appearances) this season at the big-league level. Royals' Dairon Blanco: Steals base as pinch runner. Blanco recorded his first major-league stolen base in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Twins. Blanco ran for Salvador Perez in the ninth inning and stole second base with two outs. In his five games at the major-league level, Blanco has made only two starts while Michael Taylor and Kyle Isbel are on the COVID-19 injured list. As such, Blanco's playing time is likely to be limited even while the Royals' outfield is a bit shorthanded -- he'll likely be limited to a bench role as he was Saturday. Rangers' Andy Ibáñez: Posts three-hit day. Ibáñez started at designated hitter and went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 11-4 win over the Athletics. Fresh off a game-winning two-run single as a pinch hitter Friday, Ibáñez kept the momentum going with his first three-hit game of the season. He'd been mired in a deep funk, going 2-for-43 in the 15 games prior to Friday's heroics.

  • MLB 2022 | Gurriel Jr. and Ibáñez decide, Vladi pitches today

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. May 28, 2022 Vladimir Gutiérrez will take the mound this afternoon (4:10 pm ET) against the Giants. The Cuban RH is 0-6 with an 8.70 ERA this year. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: Not starting Game 1. Hernández isn't starting the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rockies. Hernández went 1-for-7 with a double, two RBI, two walks, and a strikeout over his last three games, and he'll take a seat for the second time in the last three contests. Lane Thomas will shift to left field while Victor Robles starts in right. May 27, 2022 Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 3-for-4 and knocked in the go-ahead run in the ninth as the Blue Jays edged the Angels 4-3 on Friday. It wasn't only Gurriel's first three-hit game of the season, but it was his first multi-hit game of any kind in May. He's disappointed with his .236//291/.340 line to date, which is why he was batting eighth tonight, but he came through big in this one. Ideally, he'll go back to hitting fifth or sixth soon. Tampa's Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena. Yandy Díaz went 0-for-3 Friday night against the Yankees in a 2-0 loss. In the same game, Randy Arozarena had one of Tampa's two hits against Jameson Taillon and Clay Holmes all night. Díaz BA is .262 for the season while Arozarena is hitting a similar .59 this year. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Consecutive multi-hit efforts. Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a run scored Friday against the Mariners. Gurriel led off the second inning with a single and came around to score. He chipped in another base knock to begin the sixth frame to turn in his second consecutive multi-hit performance. Even so, he has hit just .184 with four RBI and four runs scored across his last 10 games. Overall, Gurriel has maintained a .232/.264/.384 line across 159 plate appearances. Rangers' Andy Ibáñez: Delivers game-winning knock. Ibáñez went 1-for-1 with a two-run single and scored a run in Friday's 8-5 win over the Athletics. Ibáñez, who had just two hits over his previous 43 at-bats (.047), stepped in as a pinch hitter for Eli White in the ninth inning of an even game and delivered a go-ahead two-run single. He later came around to score an insurance run. Ibáñez is typically out of the starting lineup against lefties, as was the case Wednesday and Friday. With Oakland southpaw, Zach Logue the projected starter Saturday, Ibáñez figures to be on the bench for the third time in four games. Yoan López will serve his one-game suspension on Friday night against the Phillies. López appealed the three-game suspension that he received for intentionally throwing at Kyle Schwarber at the beginning of May, and got his sentence reduced to just one game. López was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo yesterday and he's expected to join the Mets bullpen today. Twins' Yennier Cano: Returns to the minors. Cano was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul after Friday's game against the Royals, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Cano allowed two runs on two hits with a strikeout and a walk over two-thirds of an inning during Friday's victory, and he'll now head back to St. Paul. The 28-year-old surrendered 11 earned runs across 7.1 innings for the Twins after being promoted May 11. Mariners' Roenis Elias: Contract selected by Mariners. Elias' contract was selected by the Mariners on Friday. Elias spent most of spring training recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in March of 2021, but he was activated at Triple-A Tacoma in mid-April. Elias briefly joined the Mariners as a replacement player last week but has spent most of the season in Tacoma, where he posted a 3.63 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 17.1 innings over 14 appearances (one start). The southpaw converted 14 of 16 save chances for Seattle in 2019, but it seems most likely that he'll pitch mainly in lower-leverage situations to begin his current stint with the major-league club. Rockies' José Iglesias: Swipes second bag. Iglesias went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base Thursday against the Nationals. Iglesias drove in his 13th run of the season in the second inning on an infield single. He also reached base on an error in the ninth frame and proceeded to steal second base. It was his second swipe of the season, both of which have come in his last three games. Iglesias has maintained a strong .307/.362/.378 line across 138 plate appearances on the season and has recorded at least one hit in 15 of his last 19 starts.
