  • MLB 2022 | Iglesias notches save #15, Abreu collects four hits, Yadiel smacks fifth homer, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 29, 2022 Raisel Iglesias recorded his 15th save of the season when he tossed a scoreless ninth inning in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the White Sox. Iglesias was in line for a rest day with the Angels up 4-0 in the eighth inning, but the White Sox would score one on a wild pitch in the top of the frame to give the veteran reliever a chance at the subsequent save. He recorded the first two outs of the ninth inning without issue before issuing a walk to Seby Zavala, but made sure that the free pass did not blossom into a late rally, finishing off the White Sox with a strikeout of Tim Anderson. With the scoreless ninth, Iglesias improved to 15-of-17 in save chances this season to pair with a 3.62 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 40/5 K/BB ratio across 27 1/3 innings. José Abreu went 4-for-4 with a quartet of singles in Wednesday's loss to the Angels. The White Sox were kept completely off-balance by Shohei Ohtani on Wednesday, but Abreu was not phased, putting together a perfect game at the dish in a contest where his team managed just seven total hits. Abreu has now picked up a scalding seven hits over his last nine at-bats. The veteran slugger is slashing .284/.375/.451 with nine homers and 35 RBI in 72 games this season. Yadiel Hernández hit a solo home run and an RBI double Wednesday versus the Pirates. One day after coming off the bench to drive in the go-ahead runs, Hernández started in left field Wednesday and had another nice day. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Bryan Reynolds and the Pirates outslugged the Nationals. Hernández went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and two RBI on Wednesday against the Pirates. Hernández began his productive day with an RBI double in the fifth inning and followed that up with a solo homer two frames later. He has shown some pop of late, collecting at least one extra-base hit in each of his last three games. Overall, Hernández has maintained a .276 average with five home runs and 31 RBI across 211 plate appearances this season. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Another pair of steals. Arozarena went 0-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases and a run scored Wednesday against the Brewers. Arozarenza has gotten aggressive on the basepaths of late, swiping five bags across his last three starts. He now has 17 stolen bases on the campaign and could surpass his career-high mark of 20 by the All-Star break. While he's been caught six times, Arozarena has also increased his efficiency on the basepaths and is likely to continue to get the green light as a result. Yordan Álvarez is currently being evaluated for a concussion after a nasty collision with teammate Jeremy Peña during Wednesday's game. That's the only update that manager Dusty Baker was able to provide after the game, noting that the club would provide more information on Thursday. Álvarez took an elbow to the face during the collision and stayed down on the ground for a few minutes before eventually rising to his feet. Astros fans and fantasy managers can only wait and hope for the best. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the team is "probably leaning more towards Friday" for Aroldis Chapman's activation. That will allow Chapman to skip the travel involved for Thursday's makeup game in Houston. He can instead simply meet the Yanks in Cleveland on Friday. Recovered from a bout of left Achilles tendinitis, he struck out two of the three batters he faced in his final rehab tuneup Tuesday at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Note: Clay Holmes is expected to keep the closer role for New York even when Chapman returns to the mix. Jorge Soler was a late scratch from the Marlins starting lineup on Wednesday night against the Cardinals due to back discomfort. The scratch was so late in fact, that it's unclear if there was actually an announcement about the change before the game started. When Soler was supposed to bat in the first inning though, Jesus Sanchez strolled to the plate in his place. The back issue has bothered Soler off and on throughout the season, so it's more of a day-to-day situation as opposed to something that would land him on the injured list.

  • MLB 2022 | Luis Robert slugs his eight homer, Yordan adds his 23rd, Yuli also homered, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 28, 2022 White Sox's Luis Robert: Flexes power Tuesday. Robert went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double, and two total runs scored in Tuesday's 11-4 win over the Angels. Robert gave the White Sox their first lead of the game with a fifth-inning, 448-foot moonshot. He had gone 0-for-8 in his last two games, marking just the third time this year he's gone multiple games without a hit. The outfielder is slashing a strong .295/.324/.434 with eight homers, 38 RBI, 34 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, and 10 doubles across 58 contests. Randy Arozarena went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and two stolen bases in Tuesday's loss to the Brewers. Arozarena singled home Yandy Díaz in the bottom of the fourth, and hit a 109-mph single in the bottom of the eighth. The 27-year-old outfielder is slashing .258/.307/.407 with seven home runs and 15 stolen bases over 296 plate appearances. White Sox's José Abreu: Doubles twice in three-hit game. Abreu went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 11-4 win over the Angels. Abreu helped the White Sox start a five-run rally in the seventh inning with his two-run double. He's posted four multi-hit efforts in his last eight games, going 12-for-32 (.375) in that span. The first baseman has maintained a productive .273/.367/.443 slash line with nine home runs, 35 RBI, 41 runs scored and 19 doubles across 313 plate appearances. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Takes first loss Pérez (4-1) allowed a run on one hit and struck out two in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Mariners. Pérez put J.P. Crawford aboard with two outs in the eighth inning. Felix Bautista then gave up a pair of hits, allowing two runs to score, with the decisive one going on Pérez's line for his first loss of the year. This is just the fourth time in 29 appearances the southpaw has been charged with a run, and he still has a steady 1.52 ERA despite a 1.48 WHIP and 23:11 K:BB across 23.2 innings. Pérez has added a save and nine holds as a high-leverage option for the Orioles this year. Cardinals INF prospect Malcom Núñez homered twice while going 3-for-5 Tuesday for Double-A Springfield. Núñez also singled and drove in five runs in the contest. Over 61 games, the 21-year-old has gone deep 11 times, and the three-hit effort sees his slash improve to .260/.380/.466. There’s no doubting Núñez’s power; it could be plus-plus someday, and he’s a hitter who is willing to draw walks and also has minimal swing-and-miss. The questions come as to where Nunez is going to play -- particularly as a member of the St. Louis system where third base seems occupied for a while -- and he’s not an elite defender anywhere. Still, the bat can play, and Núñez could be someone worth consideration as soon as next year. The 2024 season seems a bit more likely. Yuli Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's win over the Mets. Yordan Álvarez hit a two-run home run a few batters into the top of the fifth, and towards the end of the inning, Gurriel hit a 104.3 mph two-run home run off of Chasen Shreve. He's in the midst of a five-game hitting streak, during which he's driven in three and scored two runs. Gurriel is hitting just .228 on the campaign, though he's raised that mark to .247 across 23 games in June. Adolis García went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a walk Tuesday as the Rangers defeated the Royals. In the top of the first, García hit a 96.7-mph double to left field, scoring Marcus Semien and giving the Rangers an early lead. The 29-year-old outfielder is 32-for-101 (.317) with seven home runs and six stolen bases in June. Astros INF/OF prospect Pedro León stole two bases and homered on Tuesday for Triple-A Sugar Land. The two steals give León 21 in 62 games with the Space Cowboys, and the homer brings his total to 10. While he’s hit just .226 over his 234 at-bats, the 24-year-old has hit for enough power and gotten on base at a solid enough clip to register an .801 OPS. Signed out of Cuba for $4 million last January, León is tooled up with plus power potential, plus-plus speed and an arm that competes with the best of them. The issue comes with the swing-and-miss in his game, as it’s unlikely he’ll ever be able to hit for average at the highest level. If the swing-and-miss can be kept in check he has the talent to help his team. Yadiel Hernández hit a pinch-hit, two-run double in the eighth inning to propel the Nationals to a win over the Pirates on Tuesday. Hernández saw just two pitches on the night, ripping a Wil Crowe changeup over the right fielder's head with two outs to cash in a pair of runs. It's a much-needed big hit for Hernández, who has really struggled in June. Yordan Álvarez went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and two walks in Tuesday's win over the Mets. Álvarez went 3-for-3 with two walks, a two-run home run and two runs scored Tuesday against the Mets. In the top of the fifth, Álvarez sent a 106.2 mph two-run home run to center field, bringing the score to 7-0 Astros. The 25-year-old superstar has a stellar .434 batting average with nine home runs in June (76 at-bats). Ávarez has had an incredible campaign through 66 games, maintaining a .453 wOBA and 205 wRC+. Jorge Soler had an RBI single and reached base twice Tuesday in St. Louis. The Marlins collected four hits and three runs in the third inning, which included Soler's opposite-field, RBI single. Outside of that they were shut out on just two hits. Soler has cooled back off in June after a big May, although he has driven in a run in four of his last six games. Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) worked a scoreless rehab inning Tuesday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Chapman struck out two of the three batters he faced in the 13-pitch minor-league appearance. Of those 13 pitches, seven went for strikes. The veteran reliever is right on track to return to the Yankees' bullpen this Thursday ahead of a makeup game in Houston, though Clay Holmes will remain the club's primary closer for at least a little while longer -- and quite possibly the remainder of the year. White Sox's Yoán Moncada was activated from the 10-day injured list. Moncada returned to the White Sox' lineup for Tuesday's showdown against the Angels following a nearly two-week absence due to a right hamstring strain. The 27-year-old third baseman has dealt with persistent leg issues throughout this season, which have limited him to just 29 games. On his comeback night, Moncada went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, Moncada also struck out twice.

  • MLB 2022 | J. Iglesias homered, Gurriel Jr. is 6th in AL OF All-Star voting, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 27, 2022 José Iglesias picked up a two-run homer on Monday in a victory over the Dodgers. Iglesias doubled the Rockies' lead with a two-run homer in the sixth off Tyler Anderson, giving Colorado a 4-0 lead. The shortstop has his first homer as a member of the Rockies, and he's now driven in 20 runs over 218 at-bats. Iglesias can help in the average category as seen in his .298 mark, but asking for help anywhere else is asking too much. Yankee's Aroldis Chapman: Manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Clay Holmes "has certainly earned that closer role." When Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) returns later this week, it sounds like it will be in lower-leverage spots while the team makes sure his delivery is in order. Assuming he accomplishes that, he'll then form a 1-2 "back-end monster" tandem with Holmes, per Boone. It doesn't seem like we have a ton of clarity on the roles here yet, other than it will still be Holmes closing at least in the short term. Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) will make a final rehab appearance with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday before being activated. That would seemingly put him on track to rejoin the Yankees' bullpen as soon as Thursday. Yasmani Grandal (back) has resumed taking swings off a tee, but hasn't resumed running. There isn't a timetable for Grandal to embark on a minor league rehab assignment, but his back pain has subsided to some degree. He'll need to ramp up his activity and progress to running at full speed before he's cleared for a rehab assignment. It remains unclear when he'll be back for the White Sox this season. White Sox's Luis Robert and José Abreu: Combined for a single against the Angels. Luis Robert and Abreu went 1-for-8 combined on Monday night against the Angels, in a 4-3 loss. Luis Robert had was hitless while Abreu added his 17 double of the season, while collecting his 33 RBI. Raisel Iglesias picked up a save with a scoreless ninth Monday against the White Sox. Face a 2-game suspension. Iglesias struck out one, didn't allow a hit, and threw 9-of-11 pitches for strikes. The 32-year-old now has 14 saves on the season, and it lowers his ERA to 3.76 with a strong WHIP of 0.84. Iglesias has also gotten a two-game suspension for his actions during Sunday's brawl between the Angels and Mariners. Marlins' Jorge Soler: Hitless against the Cardinals. Jorge Soler went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Monday 9-0 loss to the Cardinals. Soler BA reached now a lowest .215 for the year while, with 81 SO already this year, he is projected to have 150+ when the season is over. Rangers' Adolis García: A double on Monday. Adolis García went 1-for-5, scored and had his double 13 and RBI 48 of the season, in 10-4 victory against the Royals on Monday night. Nat's Yadiel Hernández: One single against the Pirates. Hernández went 1-for-4 with a RBI and a strikeout Monday night against the Pirates in a 3-2 win for the Nats. Hernández, once again, late in the game was replaced by PR Víctor Robles. The Cuban outfielder slash line is .268/.312/.389 with 4 HR and 27 RBI this year. Jay's Lourdes Gurriel Jr: Went 1-for-4 on Monday against the Red Sox. Gurriel was 1-for-4 in a 7-2 win against the Red Sox on Monday night. Gurriel Jr. drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the fifth and scored when Matt Chapman made it 7-0 with a two-out homer to left. Gurriel is slashing .284/.337/.407 with 4 HR and 33 RBI, and, at the moment, his efforts have earned him a place in the 2022 All-Star Game. Gurriel Jr. is placed sixth in the American League ballot for outfielders, with 672,811 votes, according to the latest ballot update released today.

  • MLB 2022 | Cortés no-decision vs. Astros, Bolaños was DFA, Chapman two scoreless innings, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 27, 2022 Royals' Ronald Bolaños: Removed from 40-man roster. The Royals designated Bolaños for assignment Monday. Bolaños was already off the 26-man active roster after being optioned to Triple-A Omaha on June 4, but his removal from the 40-man roster clears a spot for top prospect Vinnie Pasquantino, who was promoted from Omaha and will take over as Kansas City's everyday first baseman following Monday's trade of Carlos Santana to Seattle. Before he was demoted to Triple-A, Bolaños made eight appearances spanning 18.1 innings out of the Royals bullpen and posted a 4.42 ERA and 1.75 WHIP. Jun 26, 2022 Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) fired a scoreless inning on Sunday in a minor league rehab appearance for Double-A Somerset. There's a possibility that Chapman could be activated from the injured list ahead of Monday's series opener against the Athletics in New York after tossing a pair of scoreless innings for Double-A Somerset in a brief minor league tune-up. The 34-year-old left-hander is expected to operate in a ninth-inning role for the Yankees when he does return. It doesn't sound like he's too far away. Stay tuned. Blue Jays' Yosver Zulueta: Moving up to Double-A. The Blue Jays promoted Zulueta from High-A Vancouver to Double-A New Hampshire on Sunday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. New Hampshire will mark the third stop of the season for Zulueta, who began the campaign at Single-A Dunedin before moving up to Vancouver. Between the two affiliates, the 24-year-old Cuban right-hander produced a 3.53 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 35.2 innings while striking out 54 and holding opposing hitters to a .208 batting average. According to Zwelling, Zulueta will continue to make regular starts for New Hampshire and could eventually join the Blue Jays later this season as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen. Yordan Álvarez was absent from the Astros' starting lineup on Sunday due to hand soreness. Álvarez was available off the bench for Sunday's series finale against the Yankees and was intentionally walked as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning of the back-and-forth extra-inning affair. It doesn't sound like a serious concern for fantasy managers moving forward, but it's certainly a situation to monitor when the Astros face the Mets on Tuesday in New York. Néstor Cortés surrendered three runs over five innings on Sunday in a no-decision against the Astros. Cortes recorded seven strikeouts and only issued a pair of walks in this one. He gave up five hits, including a solo homer to Jose Altuve in the opening frame and a two-run single to Mauricio Dubón in the fourth inning. The 27-year-old left-hander will carry a sparkling 2.51 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 85/19 K/BB ratio across 79 innings (14 starts) into a tasty road matchup on Saturday against the Guardians. White Sox manager Tony La Russa reiterated on Sunday that Yoán Moncada (hamstring) is expected to return from the injured list on Tuesday. Moncada has been sidelined since June 18 due to a right hamstring strain, but he has made quick progress in his recovery and is expected back on the first day that he is eligible. The 27-year-old is mired in a disappointing season at the plate, hitting .179/.230/.292 with three homers and 12 RBI in 113 plate appearances. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Steals 13th base. Arozarena went 0-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base in a 4-2 victory Sunday over Pittsburgh. Arozarena reached on a fielder's choice, stole second base and scored in the Rays' three-run seventh inning. The outfielder struck out twice for the sixth time in his last nine games and has punched out 15 times in his last 39 plate appearances. The 27-year-old has produced a .711 OPS through his first 70 games this season, well below the .840 mark he had over his first three campaigns. Marlins' Jorge Soler: Was out of the lineup on Sunday. Soler was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reported. Soler started the past six games and had a hit in all but one of those contests, but he failed to make much of an impact with a .617 OPS. Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Did not start Sunday. Iglesias was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reported. Iglesias has a .631 OPS over his past 10 games and took a seat for Sunday's series finale. Garrett Hampson started at shortstop and batted ninth for the Rockies.

  • MLB 2022 | Adolis hit walk-off blast, Arozarena had four hits on Saturday, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 26, 2022 Astros' Yordan Álvarez: Resting Sunday. Álvarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees. Heading into the week, Álvarez's status was in question after he picked up a hand injury in a July 18 loss to the White Sox, but he returned from a one-game absence to start in each of the Astros' subsequent five contests while going 6-for-19 with four home runs, seven RBI and six runs. The 24-year-old will temporarily put his bid for American League MVP Award on the back burner Sunday while he hits the bench in what looks to be a routine maintenance day. Astros' Aledmys Díaz: Moving back into utility role. Díaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees. Díaz, who started the last two games after missing four straight contests due to right shoulder soreness, is expected to move back into a utility role on a full-time basis moving forward after the Astros reinstated top shortstop Jeremy Peña (thumb) from the 10-day injured list Sunday. While Pena was sidelined for approximately two weeks, Díaz went 4-for-22 with a double, a walk, two runs and zero RBI while serving as Houston's primary shortstop. Jun 25, 2022 Adolis García crushed a walk-off solo homer off of Kyle Finnegan on Saturday, powering the Rangers to a 3-2 victory over the Nationals. García led off the ninth inning in a 2-2 ballgame and on the sixth pitch that he saw from Finnegan he clobbered a mammoth 449-foot blast over the center-field wall to send the Rangers home faithful into a frenzy. He finished the day 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts. He has been an extremely productive player this season, slashing .257/.295/.491 with 15 homers, 47 RBI and 11 stolen bases on the year. He hit 31 home runs in his rookie campaign last year and is on pace to break that career-high this season. García's bat has been sizzling as of late, evidenced by a .318/.351/.602 slash line in June. Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) will make another minor league rehab appearance on Sunday for Double-A Somerset. Yankees manager Aaron Boone added that Chapman could be activated from the injured list following Sunday's minor league tune-up and will also step into a ninth-inning role for the New York. Chapman's impending return and re-elevation to a closing role is a tough break for fantasy managers rostering Clay Holmes, but it seems like the two will be able to split save chances depending on the matchup moving forward. Astros' Aledmys Díaz: Tallies second double. Díaz went 1-for-4 with a double and a strikeout Saturday against the Yankees. Díaz returned from a shoulder injury Friday and has started each of Houston's games at shortstop since. He recorded a double in the ninth inning Saturday but was ultimately thrown out at home trying to score on a single by Yuli Gurriel. Díaz's time as Houston's primary shortstop is likely to be short-lived, as Jeremy Peña (thumb) is expected to return Sunday. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Four hits in win. Arozarena went 4-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored in Saturday's 6-5 win over the Pirates. Arozarena singled and scored in the first inning and doubled in the third frame before later adding an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. His fourth and final hit came in the seventh inning when he added another single. The doubles were his first extra-base hits since June 12 and he also avoided striking out for the first time in nine games. Arozarena has struggled to be consistent from the plate this season, but the four-hit effort raised his average from .249 to .259. Yuli Gurriel got the day off on Saturday against the Yankees but came back as a PH and had a RBI. No surprise here to see Gurriel getting Saturday's afternoon matinee off after Friday's evening showdown. The 38-year-old veteran first baseman has been mired in a bit of a slump offensively, hitting .211 (15-for-71) with two homers and one steal in 20 games since June 1. J.J. Matijevic got the start but Gurriel came back as a PH in the ninth inning and singled off Lucas Luetge, after Aledmis Díaz's double, bringing home Kyle Tucker. White Sox's Luis Robert and José Abreu: Combined for three hits on Saturday. Luis Robert and Abreu went 3-for-8 combined on Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Orioles. Luis Robert added a couple of singles while Abreu had his double #16 of the season. Luis Robert's BA is .299 this year while Abreu's slash line is .263/.360/.429. Yandy Díaz was not in the Rays' starting lineup for Saturday's matchup against the Pirates. Díaz got a well-deserved breather on Saturday afternoon following 15 consecutive starts since June 8. The 30-year-old infielder has remained a reliable on-back machine this season, slashing .258/.380/.335 with three homers and one steal in 250 plate appearances. Rookie infielder Isaac Paredes was at the hot corner in his place for this one. Díaz came into the game as a PH and went 0-for-1. Nats' Yadiel Hernández: Went 1-for-2 on Saturday. Hernández went 1-for-2 in a 3-2 loss to the Rangers. Hernández walked and also was replaced late in the game for pinch hitter Víctor Robles. Yadiel is slashing .273/.320/.393 this year with 4 HR and 25 RBI. White Sox's Yoan Moncada: Could return Tuesday. Moncada (hamstring) could return from the injured list when first eligible Tuesday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. Moncada missed over a month at the start of the season with an oblique injury and lasted less than six weeks before returning to the injured list, this time with a strained hamstring. His latest issue seems to be less significant than his first, though it remains to be seen if he will indeed make it back after the minimum 10 days.

  • MLB 2022 | Yuli snaps hitless streak, Yordan adds HR #22, Morejón to the IL again, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 23, 2022 Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Snaps hitless streak. Gurriel went 1-for-4 with a double Thursday against the Yankees. It was his double #19 of the season, ranked fifth in the American League. Gurriel entered the game having gone hitless in his last four games and 14 at-bats. However, he snapped that stretch with a leadoff double in the eighth inning before being stranded. Gurriel is striking out only 14 percent of the time across 250 plate appearances this season, but he's still been able to muster just a .216/.268/.366 line. Yordan Álvarez went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer on Thursday in the Astros' loss to the Yankees. Álvarez crushed a three-run shot to right field -- his 22nd round-tripper of the season -- in the third inning off Yankees' starter Jameson Taillon. He also tattooed a 114.7-mph single to center field in the fifth inning to notch his 24th multi-hit performance in 62 games this year. The 24-year-old slugger has gone deep five times over his last five games. He's raised his offensive game to new heights this season, slashing an astronomical .317/.406/.665 with 46 runs scored, 22 home runs and 54 RBI across 261 plate appearances. If he keeps hitting like this, he'll contend for the American League's MVP Award this season. José Abreu went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles on Thursday in the White Sox' loss to the Orioles. Abreu and Seby Zavala were the lone White Sox' batters to record multiple hits in a shutout loss at the hands of the Orioles. Padres placed LHP Adrián Morejón on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation. It's the move that allowed the Padres to activate Joe Musgrove off the injured list for his start Thursday against the Phillies. Morejón returned from Tommy John surgery in early June and also spent time on the COVID-19 injured list. He's been effective when available, allowing only two earned runs across 4.2 frames while picking up a win Wednesday. Given his already significant history of arm injuries, this is a concerning development. Rockies' José Iglesias: One single on Thursday. Iglesias went 1-for-4, walked, and struck out twice in a 3-2 loss to the Marlins. Iglesias is on a five-game hitting streak and is slashing .303/.350/.375 this season. Mets optioned RHP Yoán López to Triple-A Syracuse. López, 29, gets sent down to make room for Seth Lugo after Lugo was activated off the paternity list. López will be nothing more than org depth for the rest of the year. Luis Robert (leg) was out of the lineup Thursday against the Orioles. Robert left Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays with leg soreness, and he'll sit at least one more game. The outfielder is considered day-to-day, and assuming there's no setback, he should be back in the lineup before the end of the weekend. Mariners sent LHP Roenis Elias outright to Triple-A Tacoma. Elias was designated for assignment on Monday and passed through waivers unclaimed. The veteran left-handed reliever had allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks in 7 2/3 innings this year with Seattle. The southpaw has posted a 3.63 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 17.1 innings over 14 appearances (one start) in Tacoma this year, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him rejoin Seattle's bullpen at some point.

  • MLB 2022 | Yordan two more homers, Gurriel Jr. nine multi-hit games in June, Soler homers, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 22, 2022 Yordan Álvarez powered up again Wednesday against the Mets, popping a pair of solo home runs. As is the case with most of Álvarez's home runs, these were not cheapies. He followed Alex Bregman with the second of back-to-back blasts in the first inning, launching one 408 feet at 113.8 mph off the bat. Álvarez then one-upped himself in the third with a 412-foot shot which came off the bat at 114.6 mph. Fans were probably a little nervous when Álvarez missed a game Sunday with a hand injury, but he's now come back with three dingers in his last two games. His 1.064 OPS leads baseball and only Aaron Judge with 27 has more homers than Álvarez's 21. Padres' Adrián Morejón: Got first win of the season. LHP reliever Adrián Morejón completed 1 1/3 on relief in a 10-4 win against the D-backs. Morejón threw 26 pitches - 16 strikes - with a walk, a single, and allowed an unearned run, to earn his first win of the season and third of his young MLB career. He has pitched only 4 2/3 innings this season after coming back from a Tommy John surgery. Morejón could be an important piece in the Padres bullpen if the team gets to the 2022 postseason. White Sox's José Abreu: Got on base three times on Wednesday. Abreu went 1-for-3 and walked twice on Wednesday's 9-5 loss to the Blue Jays. The veteran first baseman also scored a run and is slashing .262/.363/.431 this year with 9 HR and 32 RBI. Astros' Yulieski Gurriel: Hitless on Wednesday. Yuli Gurriel went 0-for-4 with a strikeout on Wednesday's 5-3 win against the Mets. Gurriel continues struggling at the plate and a day off will definitely help him. Gurriel's BA is now .215. Cardinals' Johan Oviedo: Picks up win Wednesday. Oviedo (1-1) struck out three over 2.1 perfect innings to earn the win in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over the Brewers. Oviedo relieved starter Adam Wainwright with two outs and two runners in scoring position in the fifth inning. He escaped that jam with a groundout, then continued to pitch well in the sixth and seventh while the Cardinals pulled ahead. Oviedo has now gone 6.1 innings without allowing a run while working in a multi-inning relief role. The 24-year-old right-hander has a 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB across 15 innings in six outings (one start). He'll likely continue to mop up innings when the Cardinals' starters have short outings. Mets' Yoán López: Scoreless on relief. RHP reliever Yoán López pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings on Wednesday in a 5-3 loss to the Astros. López came in relief of starter Carlos Carrasco, and ended up throwing 29 pitches - 20 strikes - during his outing. He struck out one and allowed one single before being replaced in the sixth. López has 4 appearances this year with 6 2/3 innings pitched, 6 strikeouts and an ERA of 4.05. Marlins' Soler: Homers in Marlins 7-4 win. Jorge Soler went 1-for-3 with his 13 home run of the season, in a 7-4 victory over the Rockies. Soler launched his homer in the seventh inning against lefty reliever Austin Gomber. The homer traveled 403 feet, had an exit velocity of 103.2 mph, and gave the Marlins a 7-1 lead in the game. With the homer, the 30-year-old slugger is now slashing .221/.315/.443 with 13 homers and 31 RBI this season. In the same game, Rockies' shortstop José Iglesias went 1-for-3, leaving his BA in .304 for the year. White Sox manager Tony La Russa told reporters after Wednesday's game that Luis Robert is considered day-to-day with leg soreness. Luis Robert was removed from Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays due to an apparent leg injury. Robert had been 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI before exiting in the eighth inning. Earlier in the contest, on his RBI single, he appeared to be hobbling into first base as if he had suffered some sort of leg injury. While he remained in the game for another few innings, the decision was ultimately made to get him out of there. La Russa downplayed the issue and said that he considered keeping him in the game for another at-bat, but ultimately erred on the side of caution. He expects that Robert will return to the lineup on Thursday. Nats' Yadiel Hernández: Went 1-for-3 against the Orioles. In the last game of the so-called Beltway Series, the Orioles beat the Nats 7-0 in a shortened game due to rain. In the game, Yadiel Hernández went 1-for-3 and grounded into a double play once. Hernández' slash line is .270/.314/.393 with 4 HR and 25 RBI this year. Ray's Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena: Almost identical performance to Tuesday night. On Wednesday Díaz and Arozarena had almost identical performances to Tuesday night. The pair combined for a 1-for-8 night in a trilling 5-4 loss to the Yankees. Díaz walked while Arozarena singled and was caught at second base trying to make it a double. Arozarena also struck out twice. Jays' Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: Another multi-hit game. Gurriel Jr. went 2-for-4 against the White Sox in a 9-5 victory and added his ninth multi-hit game of June. His recent consistency had helped him to lift his BA to .279 for the year, compiling a .400/.429/.567 slash line in the last 15 games. Aledmys Díaz (shoulder) was available off the bench Wednesday versus the Mets. Díaz came down with a bit of left shoulder discomfort over the weekend, but he was in the cage on Wednesday morning and told reporters afterward that he was "ready for the game" on Wednesday afternoon. Mauricio Dubón got the start at shortstop and batted ninth, but Diaz was ready to appear at some point, however, he didn't.

  • MLB 2022 | Yordan keeps flying high, Luis Robert was clutch, Iglesias still hot, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 21, 2022 Astros' Yordan Álvarez: Swats homer in return. Álvarez went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, an additional run scored and a walk-in Tuesday's 8-2 win over the Mets. Álvarez missed one game with the hand injury, but it didn't appear to be much of a factor Tuesday. His third-inning blast ultimately gave the Astros enough offense to win. The slugger is up to 19 homers, 49 RBI, 43 runs scored, eight doubles and two triples through 252 plate appearances while maintaining a fantastic .312/405/.633 slash line. He is leading all MLB hitters in xwOBA with .490. Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend with Double-A Somerset. Chapman made it through a live batting practice session Tuesday at the Yankees' spring training complex in Florida and has now gotten clearance for real-world competition. The veteran reliever has been sidelined since late May due to Achilles tendinitis and was struggling prior to the IL stint. Clay Holmes is currently serving as the primary closer for New York and could very well keep that gig a long while after Chapman returns. Néstor Cortés gave up four runs (three home runs) over 4 1/3 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Rays. He also gave up six hits and struck out three. Isaac Paredes and Harold Ramirez hit back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the first. And in the bottom of the third, Paredes once again hit a solo home run off of Cortes. The crafty southpaw will take a 2.31 ERA into Sunday afternoon's home matchup versus the Astros. White Sox's Jose Abreu: Dealing with leg soreness. Abreu is managing leg soreness and will be limited to serving as the designated hitter in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, though he could instead be held out of the lineup, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. Abreu went 2-for-6 with a run scored and never exited Tuesday's contest, but manager Tony La Russa did consider replacing him with a pinch-runner during the 12th inning. It doesn't appear to be a serious injury, but the veteran slugger won't play the field in Wednesday's series finale, and he could receive a full day off if the soreness remains bothersome. Rockies' José Iglesias: Another multi-hit game. José Iglesias went 2-for-4 on Tuesday's 9-8 loss to the Marlins. The Cuban shortstop added his double #15 of the season and collected his multi-hit #14 of the season. Iglesias' slash line is .303/.349/378 with 20 runs scored and 18 RBI this year and is batting .432 with RISP. In the same game, Marlin's Jorge Soler went 1-for-4, walked, and struck out, before being replaced by PH Bryan de la Cruz in the bottom of the 8th inning. Ray's Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena: Combined for two hits on Tuesday. Díaz and Arozarena went 2-for-4 combined on Tuesday's 5-4 victory against the Yankees. Díaz scored a run and Arozarena struck out, in a game that had both players making good defensive plays. Díaz is slashing .269/.390/.348 while Arozarena is still struggling with a slash line of .249/.303/.403 this year. Gurriel's brothers: Very different outcomes on Tuesday. While veteran Yuli Gurriel went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and a walk on Tuesday's 8-2 victory against the Mets, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was 2-for-4 with a run scored in a 7-6 loss to the White Sox. Yuli is having a season to forget, while Lourdes improves as the season progresses and is expected to have an even better second half. Vladimir Gutiérrez (elbow) will throw a bullpen session this week. It's a really encouraging update that Gutiérrez is ready to resume throwing bullpens after being diagnosed with a Grade 1 UCL tear in his right elbow earlier this month. There isn't a clear timetable for his return to the Reds' pitching mix at the moment. White Sox's Luis Robert: Extended hitting streak to 12 games. Luis Robert matched a career-high with four RBIs and made a sliding grab in center field in the top of the 12th, helping the White Sox (33-33) win for the sixth time in eight games. Chicago trailed 4-2 before Robert hit a two-run single off Jordan Romano with two outs in the ninth, delighting the crowd of 20,529 at Guaranteed Rate Field. Luis Robert went 2-for-5 in the game and is now slashing .300/.332/.432 with 7 HR and 35 RBI. He extended his hitting streak to 12 games and is developing into one of the best all-around outfielders this season. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Rehab assignment likely. Grandal (back) progressed substantially over the weekend, but he is expected to go on a rehab assignment prior to being activated from the injured list, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Grandal stayed in Chicago for the team's weekend series at Houston to receive treatment. General manager Rick Hahn was positive when speaking about the progress Grandal made in that span, implying that Grandal would be reevaluated in the middle of this week with the potential of resuming batting practice as well as playing in six games. Hahn also made clear that he prefers Grandal to complete a rehab assignment prior to being activated. That likely puts Grandal's return in early July at the earliest. Nats' Yadiel Hernández: 0-for-2 on Tuesday against the Orioles. Hernández walked and was 0-for-2 in a 3-0 victory against the Orioles on Tuesday, and was replaced by Víctor Robles in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hernández's slash line is .269/.314/.394. Astros' Aledmys Díaz: Did not start Tuesday. Díaz (shoulder) was out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets. Even with the benefit of Monday's team off-day, Díaz is apparently still dealing with too much discomfort in his left shoulder to rejoin the lineup. Mauricio Dubón replaced him at shortstop. Díaz had been serving as the primary option at the position while Jeremy Peña (thumb) is on the injured list.

  • MLB 2022 | Luis Robert adds another homer, Moncada to the IL, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 20, 2022 Luis Robert went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer Monday in a victory over the Blue Jays. Robert went 2-for-4 with his seventh home run of the season and two RBI in Monday's 8-7 win. Robert swatted a two-run shot in the third inning off José Berrios to give the White Sox a 5-2 lead, and it went an estimated 436 feet. Robert extended his hitting streak to 11 games. The outfielder continues to swing a hot stick, and the homer along with a single ups his slash to .298/.332/.428. As long as Robert stays healthy, he should rank as one of the best outfielders by the end of the season. White Sox placed 3B Yoán Moncada on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 18, with a right hamstring strain. The strain -- which Moncada suffered this past Friday -- has been deemed mild, but it's enough to send the infielder to the IL. Jake Burger is at third base Monday and should be the regular there while Moncada is out. Rays' Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena: Combined for not hits on Monday against the Yankees. Díaz and Arozarena combined 0-for-8 against the Yankees in a hard-fought loss 4-2 on Monday night. Díaz had an RBI in the game while Arozarena struck out twice and left three runners stranded. Arozarena slash line is .249/.304/.406 and he is struggling recently exhibiting a BA of .080 in the last 7-games. White Sox's José Abreu: Hitless on Monday. José Abreu went hitless on Monday in an 8-7 victory against the Blue Jays. Abreu went 0-for-3, walked, scored, and struck out while his BA descended to .259. Abreu continues to be a force in the White Sox's lineup, and he should put better numbers during the second half of the season. Marlins' Jorge Soler: Went 1-for-4 on Monday. Soler was 1-for-4 on Monday's 6-0 loss to the Mets. Soler had a single and a strikeout, leaving his slash line in .219/.310/.434 for the year with 12 HR and 30 RBI. Not much is expected to change for Soler, who will probably hit 30-35 HR this season. Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Did not start Monday. Gurriel sat Monday against the White Sox. Gurriel hit a grand slam in Sunday's win over the Yankees, but that wasn't enough to keep him in the lineup the next day. Raimel Tapia took over in the left field. Yasmani Grandal (back) has been cleared to ramp up activities. Also, it sounds like Grandal could potentially avoid a rehab stint if his workouts in the next few days go well. He is eligible for activation on Wednesday. Grandal is coming back from lower back spasms.

  • MLB 2022 | Gurriel Jr. fifth career grand slam, Chapman live session on Tuesday, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 19, 2022 Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit his fifth career grand slam Sunday off the Yankees' Miguel Castro. If only Gurriel always hit with the bases loaded. He's 15-for-31 with just four strikeouts lifetime with the sacks jacked, giving him a .484/.514/1.097 line. Fortunately, Gurriel has also been pretty good on the whole lately, hitting .365 with two homers, seven doubles and 17 RBI in his last 20 games. Aroldis Champan (Achilles) will throw a live batting practice session on Tuesday at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Florida. Chapman threw a bullpen session on Saturday and will progress to facing hitters early this week. The veteran left-hander continues to work his way back from left Achilles tendinitis that has kept him sidelined since late May. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: Three hits in Sunday's win. Hernández went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Phillies. Getting the start in left field and hitting eighth, Hernández produced only his second multi-hit performance since May 22. Even with Sunday's effort, the 34-year-old is slashing a paltry .205/.244/.231 through 41 plate appearances in June with a 2:15 BB:K, and Hernández doesn't seem likely to work his way back into a full-time role any time soon. Rangers' Adolis García: Swipes 11th bag. García went 1-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base in a 7-3 loss Sunday in Detroit. Garcia reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored in the fourth and added an RBI single in the fifth. He has hit third in the lineup in 10 straight games, hitting .400/.444/.700 with three homers and four steals in that span. The 29-year-old leads the Rangers in nearly every offensive category and is on pace to have a better season than last year's All-Star campaign. White Sox's José Abreu: No hits on Sunday. In a 4-3 loss against the Astros on Sunday night, Abreu went 0-for-4. The veteran first baseman is slashing .263/.361/.441 this season with 9 HR and 32 RBI. He is expected to get better during the second half of the season. Astros manager Dusty Baker wouldn't clarify exactly what Yordan Álvarez's mystery ailment was, but did note that it was something with his hand. He wouldn't elaborate and say which hand or what the actual injury was, but at least we have something to go off of now. Baker also added that he didn't believe the ailment was serious and it sounds like he shouldn't require a trip to the injured list. Baker didn't say whether the injury is to Alvarez's throwing (right) hand or the opposite one, but the skipper noted that the team doesn't believe it's a serious concern. He should continue to be considered day-to-day. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Another hold on Sunday. Cionel Pérez threw 2/3 innings on Sunday's Orioles 2-1 win against the Rays. Pérez added allowed one hit but no runs, leaving his ERA at 1.31 for the year. Cionel is 4-0 this year with one save and 20 strikeouts in 20.2, pitching for an Orioles team in rebuilding mode. Jorge Soler was not in the Marlins starting lineup Sunday against the Mets. It was just a regular off day for Soler. Avisail García shifted to designated hitter with Jerar Encarnación getting the start in right field. Expect Soler back in the lineup for Monday's series finale in New York. White Sox's Luis Robert: Two hits on Sunday. Robert went 2-for-4 with a double, a RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Astros. The 24-year-old outfielder has now hit safely in ten straight games, going 12-for-45 (.333) in that span. He's up to a .294/.329/.412 slash line with six home runs, 29 RBI, 31 runs scored and 11 stolen bases through 218 plate appearances. White Sox's Yoán Moncada: Remained out Sunday. Moncada (hamstring) was not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. Moncada suffered an injury to his right hamstring Friday and sat out Saturday while undergoing an MRI, though the imaging results have yet to be disclosed. The 27-year-old should continue to be considered day-to-day until the team updates his status, while Jake Burger received another start at the hot corner for Chicago. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Hitless on Sunday. Gurriel was 0-for-4 on Sunday's Astros 4-3 win against the White Sox. Gurriel left two runners on base and had his second consecutive game without a hit after going 3-for-3 on Friday. Gurriel's struggles continue this season posting a .222/.273/.376 slash line and hoping for a better second half of the season. Padres' Adrián Morejón: Hammered on Sunday. In a 8-3 loss to the Rockies, Adrián Morejón pitched 1 1/3 in relief and was hammered allowing two runs on two hits, including Elías Díaz home run in the sixth inning. Morejón didn't strike out a hitter and threw 28 pitches, 18 strikes, in his second outing this year after coming back from a Tommy John surgery. Raisel Iglesias, scoreless inning in a no save situation. In a 4-0 win over the Mariners on Sunday afternoon, Raisel Iglesias completed one perfect inning with a strikeout, to preserve the Angels 4-0 lead. It wasn't a save situation for the Cuban closer who has a 0.90 WHIP this year with 24.1 IP, 35 strikeouts, and 13 saves. Astros' Aledmys Díaz: Held out of Sunday's lineup. Díaz (shoulder) was not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox. Díaz was removed from Saturday's game with left shoulder discomfort and was sidelined for at least one contest. Mauricio Dubon took over at shortstop for the Astros for the series finale versus Chicago. According to Chandler Rome (Houston Chronicle), Díaz said he needs to meet with a doctor before a determination is made on whether he'll require an MRI, so the 31-year-old doesn't seem likely to be available off the bench Sunday. Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Took seat Sunday. Iglesias wass out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. Garrett Hampson (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19-related injured list and entered the lineup in place of Iglesias, who appears to be getting a routine day off. Iglesias started in each of the Rockies' last six games and went 6-for-23 (.261 average) with two runs and an RBI.

  • MLB 2022 | Yuli Gurriel was perfect, Álvarez productive at the plate, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 17, 2022 Yuli Gurriel went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored in Friday's win over the White Sox. Gurriel led off the bottom of the second with a .355-foot home run that landed in the Crawford Boxes at Minute Maid Park. He had a run scored and two RBI in the game. He's been seeing the ball well in June, batting .265 over 49 at-bats. The three-hit outing raised Gurriel's batting average to .229, the highest it has been since May 22. On top of that, he's now homered in back-to-back games. Jorge Soler went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and two walks Friday as the Marlins fell to the Mets. With two men on base in the top of the seventh, Soler hit a 93.5 mph double that deflected off of Mark Canha's glove and scored Jazz Chisholm Jr. After hitting just .171 in April (76 at-bats), he's 36-for-144 (.250) with 10 home runs since May 1st. White Sox's José Abreu, Luis Robert and Yoán Moncada: Just one hit on Friday. Abreu, Luis Robert, and Moncada combined 1-for-9 on Friday's 13-3 loss to the Astros. Abreu went hit-less with two strikeouts while Robert had one single but also struck out. Moncada had only one AB and went 0-for-1 before leaving the game due to right hamstring tightness. Astros' Yordan Álvarez: Productive day at the plate. Álvarez went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, an RBI single and an additional run scored in Friday's win over the White Sox. Álvarez's sixth-inning homer sent Alex Bregman home and was the fourth of five home runs for the Astros on Friday. It was the outfielder's 18th home run of the season, tied for fourth-best in baseball. Alvarez has been impressive this month, with a hit in 11 of 14 games, including eight with multiple hits, good for a .471 June batting average and a 1.372 OPS. In the same game, Aledmis Díaz went 1-for-4 with a run scored and his BA is now .218 for the year. Ray's Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena: Struggled on Friday. Even when Díaz went 1-for-4 in the dramatic 1-0 loss to the Orioles, he and Arozarena combined 1-for-8 with 4 strikeouts and 6 runners left on base. Tampa Bay lost its fourth straight game and they really need Díaz and Arozarena's bats, to get back on the winning track, especially with all the injuries the team is facing. Adolis García went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs on Friday night as the Rangers walloped the Tigers. García opened the scoring in the ballgame with a run-scoring double off of Tarik Skubal in the first inning. He then acme around to score on Jonah Heim's RBI double. On the season, Garcia is now slashing .245/.288/.453 with 12 homers, 42 RBI and 10 stolen bases. Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: Hitless on Friday. In a 12-3 loss to the Yankees, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 0-for-4 to extend his hit-less streak to 10 AB going back to the previous series against the Orioles. Gurriel is now hitting .271 this year. Yoán Moncada was pulled from Friday's battle against the Astros due to right hamstring tightness. He's heading for further evaluation to determine the severity of the injury. Moncada has battled quad issues recently as well, so it's likely that the White Sox are going to decide to proceed cautiously here. It wouldn't be surprising to see him wind up back on the injured list. Orioles' Yusniel Díaz: Begins rehab assignment. Díaz (hamstring) began a rehab assignment with the Orioles' FCL affiliate Fridays. Díaz has been out for over a month with a strained right hamstring. He recorded a strong .327/.424/.510 line in 14 games for Triple-A Norfolk prior to the injury, so the Orioles will be hoping he can get back to that level of performance upon his return to game action. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: On bench for doubleheader. Hernández wasn't in the lineup for Friday's doubleheader against the Phillies. Hernández has hit .100 with a run, an RBI, a stolen base, and eight strikeouts over his last six games, and he'll be out of the lineup for the third time in the last four match-ups. Lane Thomas shifted to left field while Victor Robles started in center.

  • MLB 2022 | Iglesias picked up save#13, Gurriel Jr. hitting streak ends, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jun 16, 2022 Raisel Iglesias picked up a save while striking out the side Thursday against the Mariners. Iglesias breezed through the bottom of the Seattle lineup, and it helped him pick up his 13th save of the season. Iglesias threw 11 of 13 pitches for strikes to easily protect a three-run lead. It's been a bit of a rough June for the Angels' closer, who has allowed four runs and six hits with seven strikeouts through 5.1 innings in five appearances this month. He's converted 13 of 15 save chances this year while posting a 4.43 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 32:4 K:BB across 22.1 innings, and he's added two blown saves and a 1-4 record. The right-hander hasn't gotten to work lately much because of how much the Angels have struggled, and his 4.43 ERA speaks to the fact he hasn't been particularly effective when he has been on the bump. He should be better in the second half, however, and Iglesias remains one of the few closing options that must be on all rosters right now. Jay's Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: Hitless on Thursday. Gurriel went 0-for-4 on Thursday's 10-2 loss to the Orioles. Gurriel saw his hitting streak end at 10 games, a period that allow him to collect 19 hits, seven multi-hit games, a homer, and 7 RBI, lifting his BA to .282 for the year. Gurriel' slash line is now .277/.332/.393. Ray's Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena: No much impact against the Yankees on Thursday. In a 3-game series that went all the way to the Yankees, Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena combined 1-for-7 with a strikeout on Thursday's 2-1 loss to the division rivals. Díaz had the only single of the Cuban duo, and now his BA is .269. Arozarena is hitting just .262. Padres activated LHP Adrián Morejón from the COVID-19 injured list. Morejón returns to the Padres' bullpen for Thursday afternoon's contest against the Cubs following a nearly one-week absence on the COVID-19 injured list. The 23-year-old lefty tossed a pair of scoreless innings last week in his season debut and figures to pitch in a multi-inning relief role moving forward. Rangers' Adolis García: Went blank against the Tigers. Adolis García had no hits against the Tigers on Thursday night, in a 3-1 win for the Rangers. García went 0-for-4 with a strikeout and two runners left on base, and the flashy Cuban outfielder is slashing .244/.288/.450 for the year with 12 HR and 41 RBI, only trailing Yordan Álvarez (45) between Cuban players in the RBI department. Rockies' José Iglesias: No hits on Thursday. Iglesias was 0-for-4 on Thursday against the Guardians, in a 4-2 loss. Iglesias's BA is still over the mark of .300, exhibiting .302 (57-for-189) over 52 games.
