  • MLB 2022 | Arozarena four hits and one steal in win, Cionel sixth win, Abreu wins Award, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 4, 2022 Randy Arozarena went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base on Thursday, leading the Rays to a 6-2 victory over the Tigers. Arozarena capped off an impressive four-hit performance with an RBI double to left field off Tigers righty Wily Peralta in the ninth inning. He also added an RBI single against Tigers righty Alex Lange in the seventh inning and picked up his 21st stolen base of the season later in the frame. Arozarena went 2-for-19 in his previous six games before doubling that hit total in one night Thursday. The 27-year-old outfielder is hitting .258/.318/.421 with 44 runs scored, 12 homers, 49 RBI and 21 steals in 422 plate appearances. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Earns sixth win. Pérez (6-1) struck out one without allowing a baserunner in 1.1 innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Rangers. Pérez got the last out of the seventh inning and also pitched the eighth without trouble. He was in the game as the Orioles rallied ahead, to the point that a save situation didn't arise. The southpaw is on a seven-inning scoreless streak with an 8:4 K:BB in his last seven appearances, and he'll likely have some closing opportunities since Jorge López was traded to the Twins on Tuesday. Pérez owns a sharp 1.21 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP and 35:15 K:BB, one save and 15 holds through 37.1 innings this season. Félix Bautista and Dillon Tate are also in the mix in what's likely to be a matchup-based closing committee for the last two months of the season. José Abreu won the 2022 White Sox Heart & Hustle Award. Yesterday the Chicago White Sox announced that José Abreu was selected as the White Sox winner for the 2022 Heart & Hustle Award. This is his first selection. The Heart & Hustle Award is presented annually to a player who demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and best embodies the values, spirit, and traditions of the game. The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) created the Heart & Hustle Award in 2005. Yoán Moncada hit an RBI triple on Thursday in the White Sox' loss to the Rangers. Moncada slashed the White Sox' deficit to a single run with an eighth-inning triple into the right-center field gap, which was certainly aided by an Adolis García misplay. It was his first triple of the season and lone hit in four at-bats in the low-scoring affair. The 27-year-old corner infielder is hitting .204/.267/.326 with just five homers and zero steals in 240 plate appearances this season. It's not what you want. Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Heads to bench Thursday. Vargas didn't start Thursday against the Giants, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reported. Vargas made his big-league debut Wednesday and went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base. On Tuesday, Jon Morosi interviewed Vargas for MLB Network.

  • MLB 2022 | Vargas exceptional debut, Abreu 3-run HR in win, Yordan weird 4-strike at bat, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 3, 2022 Making his major league debut, Miguel Vargas went 2-for-4 with an RBI single, an RBI double, and a stolen base in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Giants. Vargas put the first two runs of the game on the board in picking an RBI ground-rule double against Alex Cobb in the top of the second inning and an RBI infield single (again, against Cobb) in the top of the fourth inning. The other run in the Dodgers' 3-0 win came via a sacrifice fly by Mookie Betts in the seventh inning. Vargas' two knocks on Wednesday were the first two hits of his big-league career. He was hitting .291/.382/.497 in 374 at-bats at Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to joining the big-league club on Tuesday. It's possible that the 22-year-old third-base prospect will head back to the minors once Joey Gallo settles in. José Abreu homered for the second straight game Wednesday as the White Sox downed the Royals. Abreu went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Wednesday's 4-1 victory over the Royals. Abreu launched a three-run blast in the third inning that scored Tim Anderson and Eloy Jimenez and put the White Sox up 4-0. It was his 14th home run of the year. The first baseman now has homers in back-to-back games and has nearly matched his total of three home runs in July. Abreu has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball since the start of June and is continuing to perform well, going 4-for-13 for a .308 average to begin August. It was in August last season when Abreu exploded for 10 home runs, so perhaps he'll have another big month a year later. Astros slugger Yordan Álvarez gets four-strike at-bat after no one realized he struck out. Houston Astros slugger Yordan Álvarez, however, got a bonus strike in one of his at-bats against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. In the bottom of the third inning, Álvarez was facing Red Sox starter Rich Hill, and he struck out on four pitches. Álvarez took a strike to make it a 1-1 count, fouled off the next pitch, and then looked at strike three. The issue was that no one in attendance at Minute Maid Park noticed that Álvarez had struck out, no Red Sox players, coaches, umpires, and even the announcers realized what happened. The good news for the Red Sox is that the mistake didn't cost them. On the pitch following his would-be strikeout, Álvarez dribbled a routine ground ball to first base for an out. White Sox skipper Tony La Russa said Wednesday that Luis Robert (illness) will return to the team's starting lineup as the designated hitter on Thursday. Robert was activated from the injured list on Tuesday, but did not start in either of his first two games back. He'll then return to the field on Friday, take Saturday off to rest and then play the field again on Sunday. The star outfielder has been sidelined since July 15 due to illness that has caused blurred vision and lightheadedness. Mets optioned RHP Yoan López to Triple-A Syracuse. Lopez has surrendered five runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits and five walks over 10 2/3 innings of relief this season with New York. Trade-deadline acquisition Mychal Givens is officially joining the club on Wednesday and Trevor May (triceps) has been activated from the 60-day injured list. Orioles optioned OF Yusniel Díaz to Triple-A Norfolk. Díaz finally made his Orioles debut on Tuesday night and went 0-for-1 with a strikeout as a pinch hitter against the Rangers, four years after getting brought in as part of the Manny Machado trade. But he will get the boot on Wednesday to clear out a spot for Brett Phillips. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Absent from Wednesday's lineup. Grandal wasn't on the lineup Wednesday against the Royals. Grandal started the last two games and went 0-for-8 with two strikeouts. Seby Zavala took over behind the plate and bat ted ninth Wednesday. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Not in Wednesday's lineup. Gurriel wasn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reported. Gurriel is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak in which he's hit .379 with four doubles, five runs, two RBI and three stolen bases. He got a breather while Trey Mancini started at first base with Aledmys Díaz in left field.

  • MLB 2022 | Abreu hammers 13th HR, Yuli continues hot, Iglesias traded to the Braves, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 3, 2022 Orioles optioned OF Yusniel Díaz to Triple-A Norfolk. Díaz finally made his Orioles debut on Tuesday night, four years after getting brought in as part of the Manny Machado trade. But he will get the boot on Wednesday to clear out a spot for Brett Phillips. Luis Robert (illness) remains out of the White Sox lineup on Wednesday. Robert was activated from the injured list on Tuesday, but he is apparently still working back to full strength after battling an illness that led to symptoms of blurred vision and lightheadedness. A.J. Pollock is in center field, José Abreu will DH, and Andrew Vaughn will cover first base on Wednesday afternoon against the Royals. Aug 2, 2022 White Sox's Jose Abreu: Hammers homer in win. Abreu went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 9-2 win over the Royals. Abreu has homered in two of the last three games, but Tuesday was his first game with multiple RBI since July 14. The first baseman is up to 13 long balls 52 RBI, 56 runs scored and 27 doubles in 101 contests while maintaining a steady .300/.381/.470 slash line. The White Sox were quiet at the trade deadline, so Abreu's status as a key piece in the heart of the lineup remains unchanged as they try to chase down the Twins and the Guardians in the AL Central. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Continues base-stealing binge. Gurriel went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in a 2-1 loss to Boston on Tuesday. Batting second, Gurriel brought home Jose Altuve with a first inning single before swiping second base and adding another single in the fifth. The 38-year-old's theft was his fifth in his last 12 games while the two-hit performance extended his hitting streak to seven games, during which he's batted .379 with two doubles. The deadline acquisition of Trey Mancini may eat into Gurriel's playing time, though manager Dusty Baker will be forced to keep his bat in the lineup if he continues to put up quality numbers. Rockies's José Iglesias: Five hits Tuesday. Iglesias went 5-for-8 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI across both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Padres. Iglesias collected multiple hits in each game and now has two or more knocks in six of his last 10 starts. In that span, he's hit .429 with eight runs scored and three RBI. Iglesias has maintained an excellent .313 batting average across 340 plate appearances for the season, which has also allowed him to tally 39 runs scored and 37 RBI. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: Hits solo blast. Hernández went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Mets. Hernández homered in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Nationals up 4-1. It was his eighth home run of the season and his second in seven days. The outfielder has been on a tear and is currently on an eight game hit streak, including two two-hit performances. Hernández brought his average up from .261 to .272 during that span and has either scored a run or an RBI in all but two of those games. C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic confirms that the Reds are calling up José Barrero on Wednesday. Barrero, 24, might have made the Opening Day roster in Cincinnati had he not fractured his hamate bone in mid-March. He returned to action at Triple-A Louisville in late May and has since slashed .209/.263/.367 with eight home runs and five stolen bases in 54 games for the Bats. Padres optioned RHP Michel Báez to Triple-A El Paso. Báez made a relief appearance in the first half of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rockies but was optioned to Triple-A El Paso ahead of Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against Colorado. Báez was called up last week and will head back to the minors after delivering a scoreless inning during Game 1 of Tuesday's twin bill. He also pitched a scoreless frame during his other appearance while up with the Padres. Dodgers selected the contract of IF/OF Miguel Vargas from Triple-A Oklahoma City. It could be just a brief callup for Vargas, as Joey Gallo will join the team in a day or two. However, it sounds more like he'll get a chance to stick over James Outman. The 22-year-old Vargas has established himself as one of the game's top third base prospects while hitting .291/.382/.497 in Triple-A this year. Vargas brings a good mix of power and speed to the table, having recorded 15 home runs, 12 steals and an .897 OPS over 94 Triple-A games this season. White Sox activated OF Luis Robert from the 10-day injured list. Robert is finally past the mysterious illness that was causing him symptoms of blurred vision and lightheadedness. He is not in the White Sox starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Royals but was spotted taking pregame batting practice and could be available off the bench. He'll presumably be in the starting lineup on Wednesday, probably as the DH. Braves acquired RHP Raisel Iglesias from the Angels for LHP Tucker Davidson and RHP Jesse Chávez. This move was officially agreed upon just before the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline on Tuesday, with Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos even acknowledging to reporters in the aftermath that he had some worries it might have come together too late. Atlanta will pay the full remainder of the four-year, $58 million contract that Iglesias signed with the Angels this past offseason. He's another high-leverage weapon for the defending World Series champions, even if that won't always translate to save chances. Rays' Yandy Díaz: Took seat Tuesday. Díaz wasn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. Díaz went 2-for-13 with a home run and two RBI in the weekend series against Cleveland, capping off a July in which he slashed .330/.413/.511 with 18 RBI and 15 runs. Isaac Paredes will play third base Tuesday while Ji-Man Choi plays first. Rangers' Adolis García: Not started Tuesday. García was on the bench for Tuesday's game against the Orioles. García has hit .298 with three home runs, four doubles and 12 RBI in 12 games since the All-Star break.

  • MLB 2022 | Díaz with another multi-hit game, Chapman picks up another scoreless inning, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 1, 2022 Aledmys Díaz drove in a run while going 2-for-4 Monday against the Red Sox. On his 32nd birthday, Díaz doubled in a run in the third off an otherwise effective Nathan Eovaldi to give Houston a 2-1 lead. It'd be the last run scored for Houston in a 3-2 loss to Boston Monday night. The Cuban utility player had another multi-hit game going 2-for-4. Díaz has heated up at bat recently slashing .327/.407/.635 with 4 HR, 7 walks, and 8 RBI during his last 15 games. Díaz has been so-so in his time with the Astros in 2022 as seen in a .255/.309/.426 slash over 216 at-bats. Aroldis Chapman turned in a scoreless seventh inning in a four-run game against Mariners on Monday. Since giving up three runs to the Orioles on July 22, Chapman has allowed just one batter to reach in his last four innings. He'll get more late-game work if he can keep it up. White Sox's José Abreu, Yoán Moncada, and Yasmani Grandal: One hit combined Monday. Abreu, Moncada, and Grandal went 1-for-11 on Monday's 2-1 loss to the Royals. Abreu and Grandal went 0-for-4 with a strikeout each, leaving a total of five runners stranded on base. Meanwhile, Moncada was 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. The young third baseman is trying to lift a terrible season that has him slashing .205/.268/.324 with 5 HR and 27 RBI. Nat's Yadiel Hernández: One hit on Monday. Hernández went 1-for-4 in a 7-3 loss to the Mets on Monday night. Hernández, batting fifth, scored his run #25 of the year while leaving his BA in .271. In his third MLB season the 34 y-old outfielder is slashing .271/.311/.412 with 7 HR and 36 RBI. Rangers' Adolis García: Hitless on Monday. García went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Monday's 7-2 loss to the Orioles. García, with already 95 hits this season, is second among Cuban players in RBI this year with 63, but in his last 7 games is slashing a poor .185/.267/.296 with no homers, 4 RBI, and 10 SO. Astros' Yulieski Gurriel, and Yordan Álvarez: Combined for one hit Monday night. In a 3-2 loss to the Red Sox on Monday night, Gurriel and Yordan went 1-for-6 with an RBI. Gurriel was 1-for-4 adding his 31st double of the year - leading all Cuban players - with a run scored and a strikeout. The veteran first baseman is heating up but has found a replacement in the new Astros' acquisition of 1B/OF Trey Mancini. Meanwhile, Yordan was hitless but added his RBI #71 of the year - leading all Cuban players - with also a walk and a strikeout. Orioles recalled OF Yusniel Díaz from Triple-A Norfolk. He's taking Trey Mancini's spot on the roster, which isn't an enviable task. Díaz has just a .677 OPS at Norfolk this season and will be making his major league debut when he gets into a game. Luis Robert (head, illness) is not expected to be activated during the White Sox' series against the Royals. Robert went on the injured list a week and a half ago with blurred vision and lightheadedness and recently had a setback due to a cold. He's feeling better but evidently not well enough for activation. Perhaps he'll be ready later this week. Pirates acquired INF Malcom Núñez and RHP Johan Oviedo from the Cardinals for LHP José Quintana and RHP Chris Stratton. Núñez, 21, has put up a .823 OPS with 17 home runs at the Double-A level this season. He was ranked by MLB.com as the Cards' No. 10 prospect. Twins optioned RHP Yennier Canó to Triple-A St. Paul. Canó has been sent back to the minors to make room for Gio Urshela to return from paternity leave. The 28-year-old rookie right-hander has made 10 relief appearances this season at the big-league level showing an horrific 9.22 ERA in 13.2 innings.

  • MLB 2022 | Yordan delivers in the 10th, Yuli is heating up, Abreu homers, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jul 31, 2022 Yordan Álvarez delivered a game-winning single in the 10th as the Astros edged the Mariners 3-2 on Sunday. Considering the differences in defensive value and playing time, there's no arguing for Alvarez over Aaron Judge as the AL MVP through four months. Still, Álvarez is leading the majors with a .417 OBP and he's right there with Judge in slugging percentage (.670 to .671 for Judge). He's an incredible force right now. White Sox's Yoán Moncada: Took Sunday off. Moncada was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. Moncada is sitting for the first time since the All-Star break after going 4-for-29 with three doubles, three runs and four RBI in the White Sox's first eight games of the second half. Leury García took over the position third base. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Adds another steal. Gurriel went 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Mariners. Gurriel has two steals, three doubles and three multi-hit efforts during his five-game hitting streak. His theft Sunday came as part of a double-steal that saw Jose Altuve dart home for the game's first run. Gurriel has picked up four of his seven steals this season in his last 10 games. He's slashing .243/.293/.392 with seven home runs, 28 RBI, 36 runs scored and 30 doubles through 94 contests. José Abreu went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Athletics. Abreu hit a 107.9-mph, 399-foot solo home run off of Adam Oller to leadoff the bottom of the second. And after sending a 108.1-mph single to center field in the bottom of the sixth, he was called out on a double play. He's now batting .302 with 12 home runs in 378 at-bats. Astros' Aledmys Díaz: Benched Sunday. Díaz was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reported. According to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle, manager Dusty Baker said Díaz was initially penciled in to start Sunday, but the Astros opted to withhold the 31-year-old from the lineup to give him a chance to rest his legs. Ray's Yandi Díaz and Randy Arozarena: One hit combined on Sunday. Díaz and Arozarena went 1-for-8 combined in a 5-3 loss to the Guardians on Sunday afternoon. Díaz went 0-for-5 leaving three runners on bases while Arozarena also walked. Jay's Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: One hit on Sunday. Gurriel went 1-for-4 in a 4-1 victory against the Tigers on Sunday afternoon. It was Gurriel's 34th hit during the month on July, an incredible month where the Cuban outfielder slashed .382/.433/.472 with a homer and 9 RBI. Without much power Gurriel is one of the best contact outfielders in MLB right now having a tremendous season with the Jays with 104 hits, 42 RBI and a BA of .310. White Sox's Oscar Colás: Cleared to play Sunday. Colés (neck) started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Sunday in Double-A Birmingham's 8-5 loss to Tennessee on Sunday. Orioles's Cionel Pérez: One out on Sunday. On his outing number 42 of the season, Cionel Pérez wasn't really sharp Sunday in a 3-2 loss to the Reds. On relief of Bryan Baker in the sixth inning, Pérez allowed an RBI single of Joey Votto and followed with a walk that load the bases, before retiring Kyle Farmer in a sacrifice fly that allowed a runner to score to give the Reds a 2-0 lead. Pérez was pulled after Farmer sacrifice fly and overall, while he didn't allow any earned run, he also was not able to avoid two runners to score. His ERA for the season is now 1.25. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Rested Sunday. Grandal was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. Grandal went 4-for-16 with two RBI while starting each of the White Sox's past four games as either a designated hitter or catcher. José Abreu handled DH duties in the series finale with Oakland, while Seby Zavala got the nod behind the plate. Braves' Guillermo Heredia: Seeing scarce playing time. Heredia remained on the bench for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. Heredia has picked up only three starts since June 2, and his playing-time outlook doesn't look to have improved even after Adam Duvall suffered a season-ending wrist injury. So long as all of Ronald Acuña, Eddie Rosario, Marcell Ozuna, Michael Harris and William Contreras are healthy, Heredia doesn't look like he'll have a path for even short-side platoon work out of the Atlanta outfield.

  • MLB 2022 | Iglesias gets 16th save, Cortés ninth win, Aledmis homers again, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. July 30, 2022 Raisel Iglesias gave up a hit, walked one, and struck out one to lock down his 16th save of the year on Saturday against the Rangers. Iglesias earned the save in Saturday's 9-7 win over the Rangers, striking out one and allowing a hit and a walk in one scoreless inning. Iglesias got Meibrys Viloria swinging on changeup to kick off the top of the ninth, but a Marcus Semien single and a walk put a runner in scoring position with one out. Luckily, Iglesias sat down two in a row to finish off the Rangers. Iglesias went a month between save conversions, as his was June 29. He had a spotty stretch with a blown save and two losses in mid-July, but he's settled down with no runs allowed in his last four appearances spanning four frames. The Angels' free fall in the standings has seen them win just six times in July, which has undoubtedly limited Iglesias' high-leverage opportunities. He owns a 4.11 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 48:9 K:BB across 35 innings while converting 16 of 19 save chances this year. In the same game for Texas, Adolis García went 1-for-5 collecting his RBI #63 of the year. Néstor Cortés picked up his ninth victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, limiting the Royals to two runs on five hits over his five frames. The left-hander punched out five on the afternoon while issuing a pair of free passes. He allowed a sacrifice fly to Salvador Pérez in the third inning and a run-scoring single to Maikel García in the fourth, but that was the extent of the damage done against him. Cortés got 10 swings and misses on 90 pitches in the game, posting a CSW of 28 percent. He'll tote an impressive 2.53 ERA and 1.02 WHIP into Friday's battle against the Cardinals in St. Louis. Ray's Yandy Díaz homered on Saturday, Arozarena hitless. Yandy Díaz homered as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-4 on Saturday. For Díaz it was his fifth homer of the year. Díaz went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, meanwhile Randy Arozarena went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Astros' Yuli Gurriel and Yordan Álvarez: One hit on Saturday. Gurriel and Álvarez went 1-for-9 combined on Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Mariners. Gurriel had a single for his RBI #28 of the year while Álvarez went hitless in four at bats with a walk. Astros' Aledmys Díaz: Homers in second straight. Díaz went 3-for-3 with a solo home run, an RBI single and a walk in a 5-4 loss to the Mariners on Saturday. Díaz homered off Chris Flexen in the bottom of the fifth for his third home run over the last two games. Díaz has put together an impressive July, slashing .286/.351/.600 in 70 at-bats. The utility player now has 9 home runs and 25 RBI on the season and is producing out of the bottom third of the lineup. It is worth monitoring to see if he can build on his momentum in August. José Abreu went 1-for-3 in Saturday's 3-2 win against the A's. Abreu had a walk and a single against the A's batting clean-up on Saturday. The veteran slugger is slashing .299/.383/.460 with 11 homers and 48 RBI in 98 games this season. White Sox OF prospect Oscar Colás was removed from Friday's contest for Double-A Birmingham after being hit by a pitch in the neck. Colás was struck in the neck area with a pitch and tested negative for a concussion. The 23-year-old Cuban outfielder will also be re-evaluated on Sunday for precautionary reasons. It sounds like he's managed to avoid a potentially serious injury. He's been excellent this season in his professional debut, hitting .323/.383/.525 with 12 homers in 69 games between High-A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham. White Sox's Yoán Moncada and Yasmani Grandal: Hitless on Saturday. Moncada and Grandal went 0-for-8 combined on Saturday's 3-2 victory against the A's. Moncada struck out twice while Grandal left four runners on base. Both hitters have a low BA this season with Moncada sitting in .203 and Grandal in plain .200.

  • MLB 2022 | Aledmis two-homer night, Yordan on base five times, Cionel scoreless again, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jul 29, 2022 Aledmys Díaz went 3-for-5 with two home runs in Friday's win over the Mariners. Díaz got the party started by popping a 107.9-mph, 401-foot solo home run towards the Crawford Boxes at Minute Maid Park in the bottom of the second. He came to the dish with a nine-run lead in the bottom of the eighth and sent a 395-foot leadoff home run to left-center field. It was Díaz's first two home run game of 2022 and also his third career multi-home run game. The backup utility player put together a healthy .286/.351/.600 slash line in July and now has eight home runs on the season. Astros' Yordan Álvarez: Homers, reaches base five times. Yordan Álvarez went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two walks in Friday's win over the Mariners. Surprisingly, throwing an 86-mph fastball down the heart of the plate is not how you beat Álvarez. Tommy Milone learned this lesson the hard way on Friday, as Álvarez took him deep for a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth -- his 30th home run of 2022. He also singled home Jose Altuve earlier in the game. The 25-year-old superstar has scored a run in eight straight games. Álvarez leads all of MLB with a superb .423 OBP and his left-handed power bat now has 69 RBI and an OPS of 1.110. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: One single on Friday. Hernández batted sixth on Friday's 6-2 loss to the Cardinals and went 1-for-4 with a strikeout and four runners left on base. The Cuban outfielder slash line is now .270/.311/.417 with 7 HR and 35 RBI in his third year in the Majors. White Sox's Yoán Moncada, José Abreu and Yasmani Grandal: One hit on Friday. Moncada, Abreu, and Grandal went 1-for-12 with three strikeouts and 6 runners left on base on Friday's 7-3 loss to the A's. Moncada went 0-for-4 with a strikeout while Grandal had similar performance with 2 strikeouts and Abreu had the only single of the night for the Cuban legion in the game. With his single Abreu reached 48 RBI this year. The veteran first baseman is having another phenomenal regular season slashing .299/.382/.461 with 11 HR and 48 RBI. Nationals released SS Alfredo Rodríguez. Rodriguez signed with the Nationals on a minor league contact back in late April and has been cut loose after hitting .200/.231/.267 with one homer and one steal in 42 games this season between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester. The 28-year-old Cuban infielder has yet to reach the majors after six seasons in the minors since 2016. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Another scoreless inning. Pérez had his 41st appearance of the year completing one shutout inning in a 6-2 victory against the Reds. Pérez, who walked one batter and struck out two, didn't allow a hit or run during his outing, lowering his ERA to 1.26 for the year. Pérez has been fantastic during his last 15 games, completing 15 innings of 2 ER, 14 SO and an ERA of 1.20. Yuli Gurriel went 2-for-4 with two runs scored Friday as the Astros took care of the Mariners. Gurriel came around to score after slapping a 99.1-mph single to right field in the bottom of the third. He also ripped a 104.9-mph single to center field in the bottom of the fourth and scored on an Alex Bregman single a couple of batters later. The veteran first baseman is hitting .288 over 80 July at-bats. Padres recalled RHP Michel Báez from Triple-A El Paso. The 26-year-old right-hander registered a 2.93 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 39/9 K/BB ratio over 30 2/3 innings in 23 appearances across three minor league levels. He had been sidelined since undergoing Tommy John surgery last March. Báez has a 3.31 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 24 strikeouts in 16.1 innings over his last 14 appearances in the minors and he may get sent back to Triple-A when Nick Martínez is activated from the paternity list in a few days. Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Scoreless against the Royals. In an 11-5 win against the Royals, Aroldis Chapman completed a scoreless inning of no hits with a strikeout, lowering his ERA to 5.24 for the year. The left-hander is working his way into a different role from the bullpen, and so far has been consistent in three of his last four outings. Chapman lost his closer role to RHP Clay Holmes back in June and is expected to stay like this at least until the postseason. Ray's Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena: Just one hit combined on Friday. Díaz and Arozarena went 1-for-7 combined in a 4-1 loss to the Guardians on Friday night. Díaz singled, scored and struck out leaving his BA in .294 for the year. Meanwhile Arozarena went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Arozarena' slash line is .255/.314/.424 with 12 HR, 47 RBI, and 20 steals but what is concerning is his strikeouts that last night reached 101 for the season. In 2021 Arozarena struck out 170 times, a year where he won the ROY Award. Jay's Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: Hitless on Friday. Gurriel went 0-for-3 in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Tigers. Gurriel has gone 23-for-60 in his last 15 contests, causing his season slash line to go up to .310/.362/.429 in 90 games overall. Luis Robert (head) did not start his rehab assignment Friday due to cold symptoms. The hope is that he will be ready to start in center field for Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday. Robert has been on the shelf since July 22 due to blurred vision and lightheadedness. If he can move past this illness and all goes well on the farm, the toolsy 24-year-old should be activated sometime next week. Rockies' José Iglesias: Two hit night. Iglesias went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored on Friday's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers. Iglesias added his double #22 of the year and is in pace to break his own personal record (33 in 130 games in 2017). The slicky shortstop is slashing .303/.345/.404 this year.

  • MLB 2022 | Yandy Díaz adds three hits, Yordan drills 29th HR, Iglesias returns, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jul 28, 2022 Yandy Díaz is not in the Rays' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Orioles. This looks to be a routine day of rest for Díaz, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI on Wednesday and is batting .375/.465/.552 over his last 114 plate appearances going back to June 26. Isaac Paredes is playing third base and hitting third in Thursday's matinee. Brandon Lowe is in the leadoff spot. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Resting Thursday. Arozarena is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Orioles, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. Arozarena will take a seat for the day game after he started in each of the Rays' last four contests while going 7-for-18 with two doubles, a stolen base, three RBI and a run. Roman Quinn will step into left field in Arozarena's stead. Jul 27, 2022 Randy Arozarena went 2-for-5 with a two-run double in Wednesday's 10-inning win over the Orioles. Arozarena saved his best for last on Wednesday, flexing with a clutch go-ahead two-run double in the top of the 10th inning. That big two-bagger came after the Rays had squandered a 4-3 advantage in the ninth inning. On the whole this season, Arozarena is slashing a modest .259/.316/.430 with 12 homers, 45 RBI and 20 steals across 363 at-bats. Those 20 steals are tied with the career-best mark he posted during the 2021 campaign. Adolis García reached base twice and stole a base Wednesday in Seattle. The Rangers couldn't get much going offensively in this one, with García being their only player to reach base twice on a single and a walk. He singled, stole second base and scored a run in the fifth inning. It was the outfielder's 15th pilfer of the year. Yordan Álvarez a solo homer and drew a couple walks Wednesday in Oakland. Álvarez went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks in a 4-2 loss to the Athletics on Wednesday. Álvarez turned on a 90 mph fastball that Cole Irvin left on the inner half of the plate for his 29th home run and 67th RBI of the season. The line drive blast was complimented by two walks and Ávarez now has a .413 OBP to go along with a .674 SLG. The elite 25-year-old slugger has reached base in seven straight games. Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Back in the lineup. Iglesias (foot) started Wednesday against the White Sox. Iglesias missed Tuesday's matchup due to a foot injury, but he started at shortstop and batted sixth yesterday. Iglesias went 2-for-4 in the game adding his double #21 of the year and his RBI #35 and 36, he also walked. The 32-year-old has hit .333 with a homer, four doubles, 13 RBI and seven runs over his last 12 games. Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Day off Wednesday. Gurriel wasn't in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Cardinals. Gurriel got a rare day off after going 8-for-19 with a double, five RBI, three runs, a walk and a strikeout over four games since the All-Star break. Raimel Tapia took over in left field and batted ninth. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: On bench Wednesday. Hernández wasn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers. Hernández started the last three games and went 5-for-10 with a homer, a double, two runs, two RBI and two strikeouts. Lane Thomas started in left field and batted sixth Wednesday.

  • MLB 2022 | Robert not expected back Friday, Grandal adds three hits, Adolis: two doubles, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jul 26, 2022 White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Luis Robert (head) won't come off the injured list when first eligible on Friday. Manager Tony La Russa said Robert is still dealing with some symptoms of lightheadedness and blurred vision, and the center fielder isn't expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Friday when first eligible, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The 24-year-old landed on the injured list just before the All-Star break, and it appears he'll be sidelined beyond the 10-day minimum. Robert's status has improved and he's been doing more baseball activities, but he's yet to receive full clearance. It's unclear if he'll require a rehab assignment before being reinstated to the active roster. Robert was placed on the IL on July 22, retroactive to July 19. "He seems like he’s improving every day except he’s still getting tested," La Russa told reporters Tuesday. "The IL date is Friday but he hasn’t played much, so, first things first. When is he cleared to really compete and then what’s the smart thing to do. Hope for the best." Yordan Álvarez went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, a run scored and a walk in Tuesday's loss to the A's. Álvarez came through with an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning to help cut into the A's 4-1 lead. While the Astros would draw to within 4-3 by the end of the frame, they were unable to come up with another run-scoring rally in the end defeat. On the whole this season, Álvarez is mashing to the tune of a beautiful .307/.409/.664 triple-slash with 28 homers and 66 RBI across 283 at-bats. He has now drawn a walk in four consecutive contests. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Posts three-hit effort. Grandal went 3-for-4 in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Rockies. Grandal's three hits were all singles, and he was the only White Sox batter to record multiple hits in the game. This was the catcher's second three-hit effort in his last three games. The sudden uptick in hitting has his batting average at a season-high .207 with a .564 OPS, two home runs, 17 RBI and six runs scored through 217 plate appearances. Rangers' Adolis García: Double twice in loss. García went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Mariners. García continues to rake, hitting in eight straight games going back to before the All-Star break. The outfielder is 13-for-31 (.419) with six extra-base hits, 10 RBI and six runs scored during that stretch. García leads the Rangers in extra-base hits (41), RBI (61), slugging (.473) and runs scored (55). On the whole this season, García is slashing .251/.296/.473 with 18 homers, 61 RBI and 14 steals across 370 at-bats. He is just two steals shy of matching the career-best 16 thefts he posted during the 2021 campaign. Astros' Aledmis Díaz: Hitless on Tuesday. The A's beat the Astros 5-3 on Tuesday night and Aledmis Díaz went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the game. Díaz was the second baseman and batted 6th. Overall he is slashing .236/.293/.372 as a backup player. White Sox's José Abreu and Yoán Moncada: Combined for one hit Tuesday. Abreu and Moncada went 1-for-8 combined on Tuesday's 2-1 victory against the Rockies. Abreu went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and now his BA sits at .300, while Moncada had his 10th double of the year with a RBI, a walk and a strikeout. José Iglesias (foot) was not in the Rockies' lineup Tuesday versus the White Sox. Iglesias fouled a ball into his left foot on Monday night and has some lingering soreness. X-rays came back negative and it doesn't sound like anything that should keep him sidelined for an extended period. Jay's Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: 31 hits in July. Gurriel went 1-for-4 with a strikeout on Monday's 10-3 win against the Cardinals. With his only hit Gurriel reached a total of 31 during the month of July, a month in which he is slashing .408/.444/.513 with a HR and 8 RBI. Gurriel's BA this year is .313 and is now ranked eighth among all eligible players. Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Clean inning on Tuesday. Chapman pitched a scoreless inning on Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Mets. Chapman was in control this time needing only 10 pitches - 8 strikes - to end the sixth inning. Chapman struck out one hitter and lowered his ERA to 5.48 for the season. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Didn't start Tuesday. Gurriel was out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Athletics. Gurriel has a .528 OPS in five games since the All-Star break and went to the bench for Tuesday's contest. J.J. Matijevic took over at first base and batted seventh for the Astros. Late in the game Gurriel pinch hit and went 0-for-1. Ray's Yandy Díaz hitless and Randy Arozarena with two hits Tuesday. Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena went 2-for-10 combined on Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Orioles. Díaz went hitless in 5 AB leaving five runners is scoring position, while Arozarena was 2-for-5 with his RBI #45 of the year and a strikeout. While Díaz's BA descended to .289 for the season, Arozarena has seen an increase in recent days after slashing .370/.414/.630 in his last seven games. He is batting .257 now after being in just .248 back in July 15.

  • MLB 2022 | Yadiel homers in Monday's win, Iglesias suffers foot injury, Gurriel hitless, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jul 25, 2022 Yadiel Hernández went 2-for-4 and hit his seventh homer Monday as the Nationals topped the Dodgers 4-1. Hernández went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 4-1 win over the Dodgers. Hernández tied the game at 1-1 with a leadoff homer in the fifth inning. This was the outfielder's seventh homer of the year and his second in 17 games in July. He's hit safely in only seven contests this month, though four of those have been multi-hit efforts. For the season, the 34-year-old is slashing .269/.312/.420 with 34 RBI, 24 runs scored and two stolen bases through 263 plate appearances. Rangers' Adolis García: Extends hit streak with homer. García went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Mariners. García's hitting streak is up to seven games (11-for-27), and he's swatted three homers in that span. It's his third streak of at least seven games since the start of June, as the outfielder has found more consistency at the plate. He's slashing .249/.294/.467 with 18 long balls, 59 RBI, 54 runs scored and 14 stolen bases in 17 tries through 91 contests this year. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Another shutout inning. Pérez went 1 1/3 scoreless innings against the Rays in Orioles' 5-1 win on Monday night. Pérez allowed a hit but struck out two hitters to elevate to 30 his K this season. The lefty Cuban has been one of the most efficient relievers this year, posting a 5-1 record with 30 K in 33.1 innings and an 1.35 ERA. Yordan Álvarez (hand) went 0-for-3 with a walk and also scored a run on Monday in his return to the Astros' lineup. Álvarez returned for Monday's series opener against Oakland after being held out of the Astros' starting lineup on Sunday due to right hand soreness, which has been a recurring issue for the fantasy superstar over the last few weeks. The 25-year-old slugger is expected to receive occasional time off to prevent the recurring issue from becoming an even larger problem over the final two months of the regular season. Ray's Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena: Combined for two hits on Monday. Díaz and Arozarena went 2-for-8 combined on Monday's 5-1 loss to the Orioles. Díaz walked and struck out while Arozarena has his stolen base number 20 of the year. Astros' Yuli Gurriel and Aledmis Díaz: Combined for just one hit Monday night. Gurriel went 0-for-2 while Aledmis Díaz was 1-for-4 in a 7-5 loss to the A's on Monday's night. Gurriel, who won a batting title and looked like one of the game’s best pure hitters in 2021, is having a terrible season with a .234/.287/.384 performance through 345 plate appearances. With the trade deadline approaching, Gurriel's name is constantly mentioned with the possibility of Houston acquiring first baseman Josh Bell from the Nationals. If this happens, Houston may keep Gurriel as a backup player. Meanwhile Aledmis Díaz has settled in the outfield and is now slashing .315/.383/.611 during his last 15 games. José Iglesias was removed from Monday's game versus the Brewers after fouling a ball off his left foot. Iglesias initially stayed in to finish his plate appearance in the top of the second inning but was removed for defense before the bottom of the frame. X-rays came back negative and he's listed as day-to-day. He went 0-for-1 in the game leaving his BA at .300 for the year.

  • MLB 2022 | Adolis García's perfect day at plate, Yandy Díaz homers, Néstor Cortés wins, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jul 24, 2022 Adolis García went 4-or-4 with a homer, stolen base and three RBI in an 11-8 win over the Athletics on Sunday. Talk about filling the box score. García also scored three runs in one of his best efforts of the season. The homer was a two-run bomb in the first inning off a wholly ineffective Paul Blackburn, and he's now gone deep 17 times on the season. The 29-year-old outfielder boosted his season slash line to .248/.292/.460 with 38 extra-base hits and 58 RBI through 90 games. After an 18-game homerless drought, Garcia has gone 8-for-17 (.471) with two long balls over his last four contests. Yandy Díaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Royals. Arozarena: Two hits. Díaz drilled a solo shot off of Kris Bubic in the third inning, ending a 56-game homerless drought. He later doubled and scored a run in the sixth. The 30-year-old was in a 3-for-24 (.125) slump since his last multi-hit game July 11. Díaz improved his season slash line to .295/.409/.404 with 24 extra-base hits and 43 runs scored through 86 games. In the same game, Randy Arozarena added his double #21 of the season, after going 2-for-4 in the game. Arozarena slash line is .255/.315/.430 for the year with 12 HR and 44 RBI. Rockies' José Iglesias: Two more hits on Sunday. In a 10-9 loss to the Brewers on Sunday afternoon, Iglesias added two hits to reach 89 this year. The Cuban shortstop went 2-for-5 in the game with a run scored and two strikeouts, leaving his BA in .301 for the year. Néstor Cortés struck out seven over six innings in the Yankees' 6-0 shutout of the Orioles on Sunday. Cortés (8-3) earned the win against the Orioles on Sunday, allowing no runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking none over six innings. Cortés' command was impressive in Sunday's contest. The lefty threw 64 of 94 pitches for strikes in the game, tallying seven strikeouts and no walks. He was able to strand all of the Baltimore baserunners for his fifth game of the season without allowing an earned run. This was Cortés' first win since July 2, but his third quality start since then. It was also the fourth time since June 2 that he lasted at least six innings. Cortés will take a 2.48 ERA into his next appearance. Angels' Raisel Iglesias and Braves' Guillermo Heredia saw action on Sunday. In a none save situation, closer Iglesias pitched the ninth inning in a 9-1 victory against the Braves on Sunday. Iglesias didn't have any strikeout while allowed a single in a scoreless inning. The veteran closer is trying to lower his 4.36 ERA after going 0-for-2 with a 6.75 ERA in his last seven games. Meanwhile in the same game, Heredia went 1-for-2 with a strikeout. The backup outfielder' slash line is .127/.203/.536 in only 63 at bats this year. White Sox's José Abreu: Double against the Guardians. Abreu went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts Sunday afternoon in a 6-3 win against the Guardians. Abreu's hit was his number 26 double of the year and 289 in the Majors. The Cuban first baseman is slashing .304/.388/.468 this year with 11 HR and 47 RBI. Astros' Yulieski Gurriel and Aledmis Díaz: Combined for three hits on Sunday. Gurriel and Díaz went 3-for-7 combined on Sunday's 8-5 victory against the Mariners. Gurriel added his double #27 of the season - most of any Cuban player this year - and also scored a run. Díaz was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring two runs and lifting his BA to .241 for the year. White Sox OF prospect Oscar Colás went 3-for-3 with two homers for Double-A Birmingham on Sunday. Colás, 23, also reached via walk. He's gone deep three times in six games since being promoted to the Barons, and he's up to 10 on the year with the seven he hit in 59 games at High-A. He's shown some pop, but the highlight has been the hit tool with a .325 average in his 65 games along with a solid .381 on-base percentage. Colás is more high-floor than high-ceiling, but there's a very good chance he's a starting outfielder for the White Sox by this point in 2023. Nat's Yadiel Hernández: Two hits on return to the lineup on Sunday. Yadiel went 2-for-3 in a 4-3 win against the D-backs on Sunday afternoon. Yadiel was back in the Nats's lineup after sitting out on Saturday. He added his double #16 of the year and also scored. Late in the game he was replaced by PH Lane Thomas. Yadiel is slashing .266/.309/.407 this year but he is trying to get out of a slump that has him with a slash line of .158/.200/.211 in the last seven games. Jay's Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: One hit on Sunday. After going 6-for-7 on Friday and 0-for-3 on Saturday, Lourdes went 1-for-5 on Sunday in an 8-4 win against the Red Sox. Gurriel batted third and the hit was his number 100 of the season, just the second year in a row that he is able to achieve this after having 138 in 2021. Gurriel is having a phenomenal year slashing .313/.363/.436 in 87 games with 5 HR and 41 RBI. Astros' Yordan Álvarez: Hand soreness remains. Álvarez was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners due to soreness in his right hand, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reported. The 25-year-old was activated from the injured list Thursday and started the previous three games, but he was held out Sunday due to lingering soreness in his right hand. Álvarez is likely to continue having his workload managed since he can't fully get past the hand injury, though it has yet to affect his effectiveness given he's posted a 1.105 OPS in July. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Breather Sunday. Grandal was not in the starting lineup Sunday against the Guardians. Grandal got a day off after he went 4-for-7 with an RBI and walk while starting both games of Saturday's doubleheader. Seby Zavala started at catcher and batted seventh in the series finale.

  • MLB 2022 | Cionel gets fifth win, Grandal three hits night, Moncada doubles, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Jul 23, 2022 Yuli Gurriel went 1-for-4 with an RBI double on Saturday afternoon as the Astros eked out a two-run victory over the Mariners. The Astros finally broke free in the fourth inning as Kyle Tucker smacked an RBI double off of Logan Gilbert to give the Astros a 1-0 lead. Gurriel then followed with an RBI two-bagger of his own to plate Tucker and make it 2-0. That would be all the run support that Justin Verlander would need in this one. Gurriel has been a disappointment at the dish this season, slashing just .236/.285/.385 with seven homers, 27 RBI and four stolen bases in 86 games. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Three hits in Game 1 loss. Grandal went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the Game 1 loss to the Guardians in Saturday's doubleheader. Grandal ripped an RBI single off Triston McKenzie in the bottom of the fourth inning, accounting for the only run the White Sox scored against him. The catcher later notched two more singles in the contest. Grandal just returned from the 10-day injured list Friday, but he'll look to turn Saturday's performance into a trend. Overall, the 33-year-old is batting .193 on the season, but he's produced a much better .324 average in 34 at-bats over the last two months. Yoán Moncada went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Guardians. After drawing a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, Moncada hit a 103.7-mph double to center field that scored Tim Anderson in the bottom of the fifth. The 27-year-old has hit safely in seven of his last eight games. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Got the win against the Yankees. Cionel Pérez (5-1) pitched a scoreless seventh and got the win 6-3 over the Yankees on Saturday night. Pérez got in trouble coming to pitch in the seventh inning, putting two runners on bases with no outs, but then ended up dominating Josh Donaldson in a 543 double-play and then retired Matt Carpenter in ground ball to second to end the inning. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: Riding pine Saturday. Hernández didn't start Saturday against the Diamondbacks. Hernández started Friday's series opener against the Diamondbacks but is taking a seat with left-hander Madison Bumgarner on the mound Saturday. Lane Thomas took over in left field and batted second. Marlins placed OF Jorge Soler on the 10-day injured list with a lower back spasms. The 30-year-old slugger had just spent a month on the injured list due to bilateral pelvic inflammation, and now he returns there with a back issue after just a few days. This makes hit highly unlikely that the Marlins will be able to move Soler by the August 2 trade deadline. Soler does have an opt-out clause in his contract after this season, though he'll earn $15 million in 2023 if he remains with the Marlins. Randy Arozarena was not in the Rays starting lineup for Saturday's matchup against the Royals. It looks it was just a routine day off for the dynamic outfielder. Luke Raley started in his place in left field and batted third for the Rays against right-hander Brady Singer and the Royals. Arozarena has slashed .254/.315/.429 with 12 homers, 44 RBI and 19 stolen bases (in 27 attempts) on the season. Twins recalled RHP Yennier Cano from Triple-A St. Paul. Cano will take the place of the injured Caleb Thielbar (hamstring) in the Twins bullpen. The 28-year-old hurler has registered a 9.26 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 12/9 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings with the Twins this season. Jul 22, 2022 Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 6-for-7 with a double and five RBI against the Red Sox on Friday. Gurriel is the first player since Rafael Devers on Aug. 13, 2019 to collect six hits in a game. He's the first player since Anthony Rendón on Apr. 30, 2017 to manage six hits and five RBI. And it's questionable whether he was even really the star of the game tonight. The video game-like performance improved his season slash line to .318/.367/.444 with 29 extra-base hits and 41 RBI through 85 games. Over his last 38 games, Gurriel has gone 61-for-149 (.409) with 13 doubles and 25 runs scored. Yordan Álvarez went 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBI, and a walk against the Mariners on Friday. After drawing a walk in the first inning, Álvarez launched his 28th homer to lead off the fourth inning off Marco Gonzáles. He later added an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The 25-year-old slugger carries a robust .310/.409/.675 slash line, 28 homers, and 65 RBI across 325 plate appearances. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Hitless in return. Grandal went 0-for-4 with an RBI on Friday against the Guardians. Grandal missed just over five weeks due to a back injury but made his return Friday, starting behind the plate while hitting fifth. He managed to tally his 16th RBI of the season on a groundout in the third inning. Grandal is hitting a disappointing .181/.288/.232 across 205 plate appearances on the season. Yandy Díaz went 1-for-3 with a three-run double and two walks in Friday's victory over the Royals. Díaz came to the dish with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth and hit a double down the left-field line that cleared the bases. Díaz is batting .383 with nine doubles in July (60 at-bats). Aroldis Chapman gave up a three-run homer and got just one out against the Orioles on Friday. It's the first big misstep for Chapman since he struggled in his initial outing back from the IL on July 2. Still, it's a definite setback for his chances of getting more work in close games. His ERA stands at 5.75 in 20 1/3 innings. Mets recalled RHP Yoan López from Triple-A Syracuse. López will provide a fresh arm in the Mets bullpen -- at least for a day or two -- replacing Colin Holderman who was dealt to the Pirates on Friday. López has registered a 3.12 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 8/1 K/BB ratio over 8 2/3 innings with the big league club this season. White Sox placed OF Luis Robert on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 19, with lightheadedness and blurred vision. Robert has yet to resume any baseball activities since leaving Friday's game due to lightheadedness. He'll be eligible to return from the injured list next Friday and the White Sox are hopeful that he'll be ready to go by then. Yasmani Grandal was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move. White Sox activated C Yasmani Grandal from the 10-day injured list. The 33-year-old backstop had been sidelined since June 13 due to back spasms. He's starting behind the dish and batting fifth against Cal Quantrill and the Guardians on Friday evening in Chicago. Grandal has hit just .185/.294/.237 with two homers, 15 RBI and a 45/27 K/BB ratio over 201 plate appearances on the season.
