  • MLB 2022 | Abreu reaches base five times, Adolis slugs 20th home run, Randy his #17, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 22, 2022 Adolis García crushed his 20th home run of the season on Monday night, helping to power the Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Twins in Minnesota. García got the Rangers on the board with his mammoth 453-foot game-tying blast off of right-hander Sonny Gray in the fifth inning. It was hit only hit in four at-bats on the night. While many feared that García wouldn't be able to replicate his breakout 2021 season, he has silenced many of his detractors with an incredibly useful fantasy season again in 2022. He's now slashing .253/.300/.450 with 20 long balls, 76 RBI and 19 stolen bases. With his performance, Adolis continued his hitting streak extending it to 19 games. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Powers Rays with home run. Arozarena went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 2-1 win over the Angels. Arozarena drilled an opposite-field solo shot in the fifth inning, which ended up being the deciding factor in the Rays' victory. The home run is the outfielder's 17th of the season and helped improve his slash line .257/.325/.441. The 27-year-old has been a valuable asset this season, as he is just one of nine players with at least 15 home runs and 15 steals as he flirts with his second straight 20/20 season. José Abreu reached base five time Monday as the White Sox fell to the Royals. Abreu went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks in Monday's 6-4 loss to the Royals. Abreu knocked three single and came around to score twice. He's produced 11 multi-hit games this month, resulting in a .367 average with 14 runs scored through 21 contests. Abreu's season slash line is up to .313/.389/.468 with 43 extra-base hits and 68 runs scored. José Barrero went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in the loss to the Phillies on Monday. Incredibly, Barrero has a 31/0 K/BB ratio in 17 games since his callup. He's hitting the ball pretty hard when he does make contact, but a 50% strikeout rate simply isn't going to cut it. If he doesn't improve there over the next week or so, the Reds might choose to have him finish out the season in the minors. Yasmani Grandal (knee) resumed swinging a bat on Monday. White Sox manager Tony La Russa said that Grandal (knee) was able to take some swings in the batting cage Monday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Grandal was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday after suffering what initially appeared to be a significant injury in Saturday's win over the Guardians, but the 33-year-old already looks to be making tremendous strides in his recovery just a couple days later. Taking swings in the cage likely presents fewer complications for Grandal compared to running the bases and playing catcher, but the fact that he hasn't been shut down from activity at least bodes well for him making a quick return from the IL. The White Sox are currently expecting Grandal to be sidelined for around 10-to-14 days with the left knee strain. Jorge Soler (back) resumed hitting in a cage last week. Soler has been on the shelf since late July due to lower back stiffness and there haven't been a ton of updates from the club on his rehabilitation process ever since. The 30-year-old slugger figures to make it back to Miami at some point in September, but that's not a guarantee with the Marlins out of the playoff picture.

  • MLB 2022 | Yordan pair of RBI in win, Cortés with another QS, Grandal avoids major injury, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 21, 2022 Yordan Álvarez went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI on Sunday, leading the Astros to a 5-4 victory over the Braves. He's back. Álvarez showed zero signs of rust following a one-game absence due to illness, which required him to be briefly hospitalized on Friday evening after experiencing shortness of breath. The 25-year-old fantasy superstar walloped a two-run single in the third inning off Astros starter Charlie Morton and also singled and scored a run in the eighth inning. He's hitting a sublime .296/.400/.609 with 77 runs scored, 31 home runs, 79 RBI and one stolen base across 433 plate appearances. Néstor Cortés held the Blue Jays to one run in six innings in a no-decision Sunday. Cortés allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out five in six innings during Sunday's win over the Blue Jays. He didn't factor into the decision. Cortés' strikeout numbers have dropped since striking out 10 batters against the Mariners on Aug. 10, but he posted a third consecutive quality start Sunday. The southpaw was forced to settle for a no-decision during the low-scoring matchup, and he's yet to earn a win over four starts in August. Cortés has posted a 2.80 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in 35.1 innings since the All-Star break and tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Oakland on Saturday. Orioles' Yusniel Díaz: Heads back to minors. Díaz was returned to Triple-A Norfolk following Sunday's win over the Red Sox, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reported. Díaz was called up as the 27th man for Sunday's Little League Classic but didn't enter the matchup. He'll head back to Norfolk, where he's slashed .238/.327/.343 with four homers, 29 runs, 21 RBI and seven steals over 25 games. Yasmani Grandal (knee) is expected to return to play in 10-14 days after further examination. Grandal is expected to return from the 10-day injured list in 10-to-14 days after an MRI on Sunday revealed no acute damage to the ligaments, tendons or cartilage around the catcher's strained left knee. The White Sox had reason to fear that Grandal may have suffered a season-ending injury in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Guardians after he was spotted on crutches following a home-plate collision, but the veteran backstop is facing a more favorable prognosis than expected after getting sent in for additional testing. According to the team, Grandal is still dealing with inflammation caused by a hyperextension of the knee, so he'll at least need some time off for the swelling to subside. Seby Zavala is expected to serve as the White Sox's primary catcher for the duration of Grandal's stay on the 10-day injured list. Rangers' Adolis García: Swipes 19th bag. García went 1-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base in a 7-0 win Sunday in Minnesota. García singled, stole second and scored in Texas' three-run seventh inning. The single extended his hitting streak to 18 games. During that stretch, he's posted a .301/.346/.397 line with four stolen bases. With just one homer in his last 109 plate appearances, the 29-year-old's slugging percentage has dropped to .445. Despite that drought, he is one long ball and one steal away from his first 20-20 season. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Nabs 23rd steal. Arozarena went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in a 3-2 win Sunday over Kansas City. Arozarena singled, stole second and scored in the first and added a walk in the fifth. It was his 23rd stolen base of the season and second in the last three games. He's posted an 11:15 BB:K over his last 18 games, a dramatic improvement over the 25:104 BB:K he tallied before that. His .840 OPS since the beginning of July matches his career output before this season. Astros general manager James Click said Sunday that Aledmys Díaz (groin) will miss "a few weeks" with his injury. Díaz was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier this week after suffering a groin strain while making a play on Tuesday. A return in a few weeks would give him a mid-September timeline. Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Got Sunday off. Iglesias was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reported. Iglesias will take a seat for the third Sunday in a row, opening up shortstop for Garrett Hampson. While starting in each of the past five games, Iglesias went 5-for-19 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs. Reds' José Barrero: Rested Sunday. Barrero was not in Sunday's lineup against the Pirates, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reported. Barrero had started 15 consecutive games since being recalled Aug. 3. However, he's hit just .193 with a near 51 percent strikeout rate in that span. Matt Reynolds will take over at shortstop and hit sixth in Barrero's place.

  • MLB 2022 | Yandy Díaz and José Abreu continue hot stretch, Yordan fine will be back today, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 21, 2022 White Sox placed C Yasmani Grandal on the 10-day injured list with a left knee strain. Grandal had to be carted off the field after he attempted to avoid the tag at home plate in the seventh inning on Saturday. The team is calling it a knee sprain at the moment. There's currently no timetable for his return, but a lengthy absence would not be surprising. The injury came after Grandal was thrown out trying to score from second base on a single but was called out after trying to avoid a tag at home. The 33-year-old was grabbing his knee after the attempt and had to be carted off the field. The veteran has struggled this season and this injury could keep him out for an extended period of time. Reds' José Barrero: Resting Sunday. Barrero is not in Sunday's lineup against the Pirates, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Barrero had started 15 consecutive games since being recalled Aug. 3. However, he's hit just .193 with a near 51 percent strikeout rate in that span. Matt Reynolds will take over at shortstop and hit sixth in Barrero's place. Yusniel Díaz will serve as the Orioles 27th man for Sunday's contest against the Red Sox in the Little League Classic. Díaz will join the Orioles for as they take on the Red Sox for the Little League Classic held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The 25-year-old outfielder is hitting .238/.327/.343 with four homers and seven steals across 196 plate appearances in Triple-A. Astros manager Dusty Baker told reporters that the team will wait another day to evaluate Álvarez be he could return to the lineup for Sunday's finale against the Braves. This is pretty encouraging news. The 25-year-old outfield left Friday's contrast against the Braves after experiencing shortness of breath and was later transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. Álvarez has been outstanding this season and is hitting .295/.400/.612 with 31 homers across 428 plate appearances. The Astros and fantasy managers will rejoice when the slugger returns to the starting lineup. Aug 20, 2022 Astros' Yulieski Gurriel: Provides clutch double in loss. Yulieski Gurriel went 1-for-5 with a RBI and two strikeouts on Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Braves. Gurriel provided a clutch double off reliever Dylan Lee in the top of the 10th inning with the score favorable to the Astros 2-1, to give his team an important two runs lead before finally failing to win a second contest against the Braves in 11 innings. With his double, Gurriel reaffirmed its leadership among Cubans with 34 doubles and is now fifth in the entire MLB, a stat led by first baseman Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers with 39. It was also Gurriel's double #200 at MLB level. Rays' Yandy Díaz: Continues hot stretch. Díaz went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI in Saturday's win over the Royals. Díaz's double off lefty starter Kris Bubic drove in a run with one out in the fourth to increase the Rays' lead to four. The third baseman's bat has woken up recently as he boasts a .346 average and .654 slugging percentage in 26 at-bats over his last seven games. In addition, the 31-year-old hits better against lefties with a .900 OPS in 96 at-bats compared to a .754 OPS in 278 at-bats against right-handed pitching. Luis Robert went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in his return to the lineup as the White Sox topped the Guardians 2-0. Robert led off the sixth inning with a single off of Shane Bieber and came around to score the game's first run on an RBI double by Jose Abreu. The dynamic 25-year-old is now hitting .302/.338/.453 with 12 homers, 56 RBI and 11 stolen bases across 84 games on the season. Nationals placed OF Yadiel Hernández on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain. Hernández last played on Thursday but had been losing playing time to Joey Meneses and Joey Call recently. He is eligible to return to the active lineup in early September but it seems that the Nationals are prioritizing playing time for other players. Padres' Adrián Morejón: Got third win against the Nats. Adrián Morejón pitched two scoreless innings on Saturday against the Nats, in a 2-1 victory for the Padres. Morejón allowed two hits and struck out one, with 28 pitches, 19 of them for strikes. It was Morejón's third win of the season. Yordan Álvarez (illness) was not in the Astros' starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Braves. No surprise here after Álvarez was removed from Friday's contest against the Braves after experiencing shortness of breath. He was later transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. No official diagnosis has been released, but he's reportedly in stable condition. That's the positive news at the moment. It's unclear whether he'll wind up requiring a trip to the injured list. There should be an update on his status soon. White Sox' Abreu: Double and RBI against the Guardians. José Abreu continued his hot stretch going 1-for-3 with his double #29 of the year and RBI #58 in a 2-0 victory against the Guardians on Saturday's night. Abreu is slashing .308/.383/.465 with 14 HR and 58 RBI this year and in his last 7 games is crutching the ball going 12-for-25 with 2 RBI and a slash line of .480/.536/.520. Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Scoreless outing. Raisel Iglesias got two outs on Saturday's night in 5-4 victory against the Astros. It was an scoreless outing for the Cuban reliever that threw 18 pitches, 10 of the for strikes with a strikeout and a single. Iglesias was acquired by Atlanta on Aug 2 with the team paying the remainder of the 4-year deal - $58 million - the righthander had with his previous team, the Angels. White Sox's Norge Vera: Bumped up to High-A. Vera had an abbreviated start in his High-A debut Aug. 14 as he works his way back from shoulder stiffness, White Sox Daily reports. Chicago's top pitching prospect had a two-week break in between his final start at Single-A and his first start at High-A. He did not allow a baserunner and struck out two over two innings in his debut for Winston-Salem. On the season, the hard-throwing 22-year-old has a 1.73 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 37 strikeouts through 26 innings between both levels. Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Sat Saturday. Gurriel was on the bench Saturday against the Yankees. Gurriel sat after going 1-for-12 at the plate in his last three games. Raimel Tapia got the nod in left field. Aug 19, 2022 Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Wild again Friday. Chapman allowed a run on one hit and two walks over one-third of an inning against Toronto on Friday. Chapman entered in the ninth inning with New York down by three runs, so his struggles didn't do much to impact the outcome of the game. Nonetheless, it's discouraging that the veteran fireballer was unable to find the strike zone -- he threw just five of 14 pitches over the plate and walked the final two batters he faced to load the bases. Chapman was presumed to be in line to regain his closing role when Clay Holmes (back) moved to the injured list Aug. 16, but since that time Chapman has walked four batters and given up three runs over one inning across two appearances. He hasn't been used in a save situation, but it wouldn't be surprising if Scott Effross is called upon the next time a closer is needed given Chapman's ugly past two outings. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Knocks in two runs. Arozarena went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a steal in Friday's 3-2 loss to Kansas City. Arozarena sent David Peralta and Harold Ramirez home on a sixth-inning single. He also picked up a steal in the game, his second this month, his first since Aug. 4 and his 22nd of the season. The outfielder has hits in back-to-back games and in three of his last four games, but has also struck out four times during that span. Arozarena is slashing .256/.323/.437 on the year.

  • MLB 2022 | Gurriel is heating up, Yandy slugs seventh homer, Moncada homers again, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 18, 2022 Astros's Yulieski Gurriel and Yordan Álvarez: Combined for four hits on Thursday. Gurriel and Álvarez went 4-for-8 with 3 RBI, four run scored, two walks, and three strikeouts on Thursday's 21-5 victory against the White Sox. Gurriel went 3-for-5 adding his double #33 of the year and RBIs #33 and 34. He also walked and struck out. Meanwhile Álvarez was 1-for-3 adding his double #16 of the year and RBI #77. It was a wild win for the Astros that still lead the American League West and are the favorites to go to the 2022 World Series for the new circuit. Yandy Díaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and three RBI on Thursday, lifting the Rays to a 7-1 blowout victory over the Royals. Late in the game he was removed. Díaz kicked off the scoring with a solo shot to left field off Royals starter Max Castillo in the opening frame, which represented the lone run for either side until the late innings. He also added a two-run double in the seventh inning to effectively break the contest wide open. The 31-year-old on-base machine doesn't possess a ton of over-the-fence power, but he's gone deep seven times in 437 plate appearances this season. Late in the game Díaz was removed due to soreness in his left knee while running the bases in the seventh inning. The extent of the injury is not yet known. Expect him to head for further evaluation and the Rays to provide additional clarification on his status prior to Friday's game. White Sox's Yoan Moncada: Slugs seventh homer. Moncada went 1-for-3 with two walks and a three-run home run Thursday against the Astros. Moncada was one of the few bright spots for the White Sox on Thursday as he delivered his seventh home run of the season. He's collected at least one hit in seven of his last eight games, maintaining a .267 average with seven RBI and three runs scored in that span. Moncada is still hitting a dreadful .202/.271/.327 across 299 plate appearances on the season. White Sox's Luis Robert: Puts in full workout. White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Robert (wrist) is scheduled to put in a full workout Thursday, but the skipper is uncertain if the outfielder will be ready to start in Friday's game against the Guardians, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reported. Robert was out of the lineup for a sixth consecutive game in Thursday's series finale with the Astros, but he was available in a pinch-running capacity like he was in Wednesday's 3-2 loss. La Russa said that Robert is dealing with more of a bruise than a sprain to his left wrist, so at this stage, the 25-year-old's main focus is ensuring he can swing the bat effectively while managing discomfort. How Robert responds to his batting session in the cage Thursday will likely be the key factor in the White Sox determining his availability heading into the weekend. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Got rest day. Grandal was out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Astros. Grandal got a breather after he started each of the past three games -- two at catcher and one as a designated hitter -- while going 2-for-9 with two walks. Though Grandal remains the White Sox's top option behind the plate, his grip on the No. 1 role has loosened while he's submitted a disappointing .565 OPS over 283 plate appearances on the season in addition to missing time due to injury. Jays' Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: One hit on Thursday against the Yankees. Gurriel went 1-for-4 with a run scored, a walk, and an strikeout on Thursday's 9-2 win over the Yankees. Gurriel Jr. is having an exceptional season slashing .306/.358/.416 with 5 homers and 48 RBI. Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Scoreless against the Mets. Iglesias, in his new role as a setup man, got one out on Thursday's 3-2 win against the Mets. Iglesias, serving as the setup man for closer Kanley Jansen, is having "less responsibilities" in a team that will be in the postseason and will defend its World Series title. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: Hitless against the Padres. Hernández went 0-for-3 on Thursday 3-1 win against the Padres. The Cuban outfielder, coming from a two days lineup absent, went hitless against starter Yu Darvish. He is slashing .269/.312/.410 with 9 homers and 41 RBI this year. Rockies' Jose Iglesias: One hit on Thursday. Iglesias went 1-for-2 on Thursday's 13-0 loss to the Cardinals. In the middle of the game Iglesias was pulled out for PH Connor Joe. The Cuban infielder already has 117 hits this year and is slashing .315/.351/.413 with 3 HR and 46 RBI for the Rockies.

  • MLB 2022 | Barrero first career walk-off, Chapman wins but suffers, Aledmis to the IL, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 18, 2022 Luis Robert (wrist) remains out of the White Sox lineup on Thursday. Robert did come off the bench on defense to finish out Wednesday night's loss to the Astros, but he is still unable to swing at full strength because of a nagging left wrist injury. A cortisone injection was administered on Wednesday and will hopefully help the cause. Eloy Jiménez, AJ Pollock, and Gavin Sheets starting across the outfield for Chicago on Thursday afternoon versus Houston. Aug 17, 2022 Aroldis Chapman gave up two runs in the 10th against the Rays on Wednesday, but he wound up with a win anyway. Scott Effross opened the 10th after pitching a scoreless ninth and got Harold Ramirez to ground out to begin the inning. Chapman came in at that point and proceeded to walk Isaac Paredes and Taylor Walls on a total of nine pitches. After striking out Jose Siri, he gave up a three-double to Francisco Mejía, putting him in line for the loss. Fortunately, the Yankees came back with a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the inning. Still, this was bad timing for Chapman to stumble; he figured to be in the mix for saves with Clay Holmes on the IL. After tonight, Effross would seem to be the clear favorite for saves. Yoán Moncada went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in Wednesday's loss to the Astros. Moncada got the White Sox on the board with his RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, though his outfit ultimately would fail to find any real sustained success on offense in the end 3-2 loss. Over the course of 269 at-bats this season, Moncada is slashing a paltry .201/.265/.316 with six homers and 36 RBI. He has struggled to stay healthy this summer, appearing in just 73 total games due to various leg injuries. Barrero gets game-ending hit as Reds beat Phillies 1-0. José Barrero hit a game-ending RBI single off Seranthony Domínguez with two out in the ninth inning, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 on Wednesday. Albert Almora Jr. helped set up Barrero's winning hit with a one-out walk. Almora advanced to second when Alejo López singled for his third hit, and then hustled home when Barrero hit a grounder back up the middle. ''I was fortunate enough to make contact,'' said Barrero, who had never faced Domínguez before. ''All I wanted to do was help the team by making contact.'' Barrero went 1-for-4 with an RBI and two strikeouts in the game. The 24-year-old has struck out 26 times in 48 big league at-bats this year. José Abreu went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Wednesday's loss to the Astros. Abreu was the only White Sox batter to finish with multiple knocks in the end 3-2 defeat. Overall this season, the veteran slugger is slashing .309/.384/.467 with 14 home runs and 56 RBI in 443 at-bats. This would be his fourth career season of at least a .300 batting average if he can keep his numbers up through the end of the campaign. Díaz hit two doubles and reach 30 extra-bases for the third time in his career, Díaz went 2-for-6 with two doubles (#23 and 24) and three RBI on Wednesday in an 8-7 loss against the Yankees in New York. Díaz delivered an RBI double off starter Domingo Germán in the third inning to put the Rays up 1-0. Then, later in the fifth inning, Díaz laced another double off Germán bringing home two runners to extend Tampa's lead to 3-0. The two doubles allowed Díaz to collect 30 extra-bases in the season, a feat that he has achieved three times in his six years at MLB level. Díaz is slashing .273/383/.388 with 6 homers, and 41 RBI this year and continues to be a solid and productive hitter for the Rays. Adolis García went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the A's. García extended his ongoing hitting streak to 14 consecutive games after working an RBI double off of Adam Oller in the bottom of the first inning. That would be his lone knock of the contest. Across 445 at-bats this season, 29-year-old outfielder García is slashing a solid .254/.301/.452 with 19 home runs, 74 RBI and 17 steals. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Ineffective against the Jays. Cionel was hit hard by the Jays in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the division rivals. With the game showing no score Cionel came in relieve of Joey Krehbiel in the seventh, and Springer, hitting for Raimel Tapia, welcomed him breaking the deadlock with a base hit to center on an 0-2 pitch. The lefthander ended up allowing Santiago Espinal's double that brought two runs home and then walked Danny Jansen before being replaced by Louis Head. It was an horrible outing for Cionel who allowed three earned runs to see his season ERA climbing to 1.77. White Sox manager Tony La Russa said after Wednesday's game that Luis Robert received a cortisone injection in his injured left wrist. Robert apparently experienced some soreness in his left wrist after swinging on Tuesday, so he received the injection to combat the inflammation. La Russa was quick to reiterate that he still didn't feel like Robert would require a stint on the injured list. He's still considered day-to-day, but eventually something has to give here. Astros placed INF/OF Aledmys Díaz on the 10-day injured list with a left groin strain. Díaz suffered the injury while making a nice running catch on a sinking line drive in the outfield during Tuesday's game. It's not yet clear how long he'll be sidelined. J.J. Matijevic was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move. Luis Robert (wrist) was held out of the White Sox starting lineup once again on Wednesday. Robert continues to progress in his recovery from a sprained left wrist and is still expected to avoid the injured list, but he'll need at least another day before he's ready to return. Adam Engel is starting in his place in center field and batting eighth for the White Sox against Framber Valdéz and the Astros on Wednesday night in Chicago. Padres beat Marlins 10-3, Adrián Morejón got the win. Adrián Morejón earned his fourth career victory on Wednesday night, when the Padres beat the Marlins 10-3 in Miami. Morejón relieved starter Mike Clevinger in the fifth inning pitching 1 2/3 perfect innings with three strikeouts to earn the win. It was Morejón fourth career win improving his 2022 season record to 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA. The young lefthander has been phenomenal in his last seven games going 7 2/3 scoreless innings with 5 hits, a walk, and seven strikeouts. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Got rest day. Grandal was out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Astros. Grandal will be getting a breather after he started each of the past three games -- two at catcher and one as a designated hitter -- while going 2-for-9 with two walks. Though Grandal remains the White Sox's top option behind the plate, his grip on the No. 1 role has loosened while he's submitted a disappointing .565 OPS over 283 plate appearances on the season in addition to missing time due to injury. Seby Zavala will catch for starting pitcher Lucas Giolito on Thursday. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: Remained out of lineup. Hernandez did not start Wednesday against the Cubs, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reported. Hernández was out of the lineup for a second consecutive game since left-hander Drew Smyly was on the mound for the Cubs. Alex Call started in left field and batted eighth. Late in the game Hernández came into the game as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-1.

  • MLB 2022 | Abreu three more hits, Cortés quality start in loss, Morejón scoreless in Aug, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 16, 2022 White Sox's José Abreu: Racks up three hits in win. Abreu went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Astros. Abreu has multiple hits in six of his last 10 games, batting .410 (16-for-39) in that span. The first baseman has just one extra-base hit, a double, in that stretch, and he's posted a 2:10 BB:K. Despite the lack of power, he's finding ways to remain productive. The 35-year-old is up to a .307/.382/.466 slash line with 14 home runs, 56 RBI, 64 runs scored and 28 doubles through 498 plate appearances. Néstor Cortés allowed three runs over seven innings in Tuesday's loss to the Rays. Cortés (9-4) took the defeat Tuesday against Tampa Bay, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three in seven innings. All three runs against Cortés came in the first inning as he allowed singles to the first two batters and then a three-run homer to Randy Arozarena with one out. He didn't allow another hit until the sixth innings as he retired 20 of the last 21 batters he faced. The lefty has allowed three runs or fewer in six straight starts, compiling a 2.72 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 33:8 K:BB in 36.1 innings over that span. With 125 innings pitched, he's thrown 10 more innings than in any other major or minor-league season. Adrián Morejón may get a better role getting to the end of the season. Morejón missed about three weeks with shoulder inflammation this season. The 23-year-old southpaw allowed at least one run in four of his seven appearances during the months of June-July, though he's also picked up one win. In August he has not allowed a run in six outings compiling a 0.00 ERA in 6 innings with 4 strikeouts, five hits, and a walk. He's added a 4.33 K/BB ratio with a 4.11 ERA, and 1.17 WHIP through 15.1 innings. Morejón is expected to keep a middle-relief role going forward, but his background as a starter could allow him to cover multiple innings and maybe a different role by the end of the season. Astros manager Dusty Baker indicated that Aledmys Díaz (groin) might be placed on the 10-day injured list. Díaz tweaked his left groin as he robbed Yasmani Grandal of a base hit in the third inning of the Astros' loss at the White Sox on Tuesday night. He had been hitting the ball well over the last handful of weeks, so this comes with unfortunate timing. Look for an official decision on Wednesday. Díaz did downplay the issue after the game, but any sort of strain would mean an extended absence. The 32-year-old entered Wednesday with a .347/.377/.653 batting line over his last 53 plate appearances. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Slugs 16th homer. Arozarena went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run Tuesday against the Yankees. Arozarena took Néstor Cortés yard in the first inning to record his 16th home run of the season. Arozarena now has four homers across his last six starts, and he's also driven in 10 and scored five runs in that span. For the season, Arozarena also has 21 steals -- a career-high -- while maintaining a .256/.317/.438 line across 461 plate appearances. He's now homered four times over his last six games. José Barrero went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts on Tuesday versus the Phillies. Outside of his two-homer game earlier this month in Milwaukee, Barrero is batting .150 with a hideous 57.5 percent strikeout rate over 11 games. The 24-year-old has loads of talent but clearly plenty to work on. Astros' Yulieski Gurriel, Yordan Álvarez, and Aledmis Díaz: Two hits on Tuesday. Gurriel, Yordan, and Díaz went 2-for-10 on Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the White Sox. Gurriel went 1-for-4, scored, walked and struck out, while Yordan also walked and struck out twice. Díaz went 0-for-2 before exiting Tuesday's contest during the fourth inning. The 32-year-old has been playing more outfield with Michael Brantley (shoulder), and he suffered the injury while making a catch in left field. Luis Robert (wrist) was out of the White Sox lineup again on Tuesday. Robert continues to be bothered by left wrist discomfort and got another day for rest and treatment. Eloy Jiménez, A.J. Pollock, and Andrew Vaughn started across the outfield versus the Astros. Moncada hits winning single in 8th again, ChiSox beat Astros. Yoán Moncada came through with the go-ahead single in the eighth inning for the second straight game, and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Houston Astros 4-3 on Tuesday night. Moncada went 1-for-4 with an RBI and an strikeout and is now slashing .200/.266/.313 with 6 homers, and 35 RBI. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: Held out Tuesday. Hernández was not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs. Hernández tallied two hits in Monday's contest, but he was be held out Tuesday with the Nationals loading up on right-handed hitters against Cubs southpaw Justin Steele. Lane Thomas got the start in left field in Hernández's place.

  • MLB 2022 | Moncada big hit, Yandy two-RBI vs. the NYY, Abreu third straight multi-hit game, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 15, 2022 Yandy Díaz went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI against the Yankees on Monday. Diaz delivered a two-RBI single in the ninth inning to put the Rays up 4-0. It gave him his first multi-hit game since July 27. He's struggled in post All-Star break action, as Monday's effort marked only his third multi-hit effort in 19 starts -- leading to a .189 average. However, Díaz has still managed to deliver timely hits in that span, as he also has 10 runs scored and 12 RBI. He's sitting at .272/.385/.385 in 423 plate appearances for the year. Yoán Moncada went 1-for-4 with two RBI on Monday in a victory over the Astros. Moncada went 1-for-4 with two RBI on Monday against the Astros. Moncada made his only hit of the day count, as he delivered the game-winning runs on a single in the eighth inning. Despite the positive performance Monday, Moncada is hitting only .196 across 54 at-bats in August. That's continued a disappointing campaign, as Moncada has maintained just a .199/.266/.314 line in 286 plate appearances. Luis Robert (wrist) remained out of the White Sox' lineup Monday. It's the third straight start he's missed with a sprained left wrist. Robert will go through a pregame workout to see if he could play on Tuesday. AJ Pollock is again in center field and Eloy Jimenez is in left. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: One hit on Monday. Gurriel went 1-for-4 batting second on Monday's 4-2 loss to the White Sox. Gurriel scored a run and also participated in one double-play. The veteran first baseman is having his worst full MLB season, slashing .243/.289/.380 with 7 HR, 32 RBI, 51 strikeouts and 8 steals for the year. White Sox's José Abreu: Third straight multi-hit game. Abreu went 2-for-3 with one run scored in Monday's win over the Astros. The veteran first baseman recorded two hits Monday for the third game in a row, raising his average to .303 on the season. Abreu has slashed .329/.376/.481 since the beginning of July and is on pace for another great season. He leads the AL in hits with 130 and owns a 142 wRC+ on the season, good for 16th in the majors. Rangers' Adolis García: One hit on Monday. Adolis García went 1-for-4 on Monday's 2-1 victory against the A's. García struck out twice batting third and playing right-field. Offensively he is having a good moment slashing .296/.367/.389 with a homer and 10 RBI during his last 15 games. Astros' Yordan Álvarez and Aledmis Díaz: Hitless on Monday. Álvarez and Díaz went 0-for-6 combined on Monday's 4-2 loss to the White Sox. Díaz was o-for-4 while Álvarez had his RBI #75 of the year. Álvarez is slashing a poor .185/.270/.259 with only a homer, 6 RBI, and 15 strikeouts in his last 15 games. Meanwhile, Díaz is using all his opportunities on the field compiling a .321/.351/.604 slash line with 4 HR and 11 RBI in the same period of time. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: One RBI Monday. Yadiel Hernández went 2-for-3 on Monday's 5-4 victory against the Cubs. Hernández scored a run and had his RBI #41 of the year, before being replaced by PH Alex Call late in the game. Yadiel is having a good season with the Nats that are in rebuilding mode, slashing .272/.316/.416 with 9 HR, 41 RBI, and 81 hits in 91 games this year. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: 11 consecutive outings without allowing a run. The crafty lefty extended to 11 his consecutive games with no runs allowed. Cionel got one out on Monday's Orioles 7-3 victory over the Jays. He threw just one pitch to end the 8th inning, extending to 10 1/3 his consecutive scoreless inning since July 15, when he allowed two earned runs against Tampa Bay. Pérez is having an amazing season from the bullpen with 40 strikeouts in 40 2/3 innings, a sensational 1.11 ERA, 6-1 record, and 1 save. Reds' José Barrero: Hitless on Monday's game against the Phillies. Barrero went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and three man left on base on Monday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies. The shortstop grounded into double play once and his BA is now .200 for the year.

  • MLB 2022 | Luis Robert to avoid IL, Gurriel Jr. multi-hit game, Arozarena homers, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 15, 2022 White Sox manager Tony La Russa confirmed Sunday that Luis Robert is still expected to avoid the injured list. Robert missed the final two games over the weekend due to a sprained left wrist, but he's still considered day-to-day and is expected to return to the White Sox lineup early in the week. The 25-year-old outfielder has slashed a robust .301/.336/.454 with 12 long balls and 11 swipes through 354 plate appearances with the White Sox this season. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 3-for-4 with a run scored on Sunday in the Blue Jays' loss at the hands of the Guardians. Gurriel Jr. singled and came around to score on Teoscar Hernández's RBI double in the opening frame and was the lone Blue Jays' batter to record multiple hits in the one-sided affair. The 28-year-old outfielder is hitting .308/.359/.419 with 48 runs scored, five homers, 45 RBI and three steals across 411 plate appearances. Randy Arozarena clobbered a three-run homer on Sunday, leading the Rays to a 4-1 victory over the Orioles. Arozarena kicked off the scoring with a towering three-run blast to left field against Orioles starter Jordan Lyles in the third inning and the Rays never looked back in this one. It was his third round-tripper in his last four contests. The 27-year-old outfielder has delivered this season for fantasy managers as a power/speed contributor, walloping 15 big flies and also swiping 21 bases in 108 games. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Remains in setup role. Pérez continues to operate as a setup man and has a win and two holds over 4.1 scoreless innings since Baltimore sent closer Jorge López to Minnesota at the trade deadline. Manager Brandon Hyde initially indicated Perez, Félix Bautista and Dillon Tate would be in the mix for save opportunities after López's departure, but it's Bautista who has received and successfully converted all three of the team's save chances since the trade. Overall Pérez has one save and 17 holds with a 1.12 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 40:15 K:BB across 40.1 innings this year, and he should continue to work in a setup role while Bautista remains effective and healthy. Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Surging while Holmes struggles. There had already been hints that Chapman could begin to see closing opportunities again -- he was slated to finish last Friday's game against the Cardinals before Holmes gave up the lead in the eighth inning -- and the continued struggles of the latter make that likelihood stronger. Boone implied that Holmes may have lost his grasp on the ninth-inning role following this Friday's loss, stating, "We'll see. I'm trying to get him in the best positions to be successful. Some nights it'll be the ninth, some nights it'll be having the full go with the pen. We'll keep working with him. Got to get him right and consistent." If Holmes is pulled from the role, Chapman is the most likely candidate to take over closing duties given his extensive history of success (he has 315 career saves) and his recent return to form (he's tossed eight consecutive scoreless innings, posting an 8:1 K:BB and allowing three hits over that stretch). White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Received Sunday off. Grandal was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. Grandal started the past five games and will take a seat Sunday after going 5-for-16 with a home run, two RBI, two runs and four walks during that stretch. Seby Zavala will work behind the plate and bat eighth in the series finale versus Detroit. Astros' Aledmys Díaz: Out of Sunday's lineup. Díaz was not in the lineup for Sunday's game against Oakland. Díaz has an .806 OPS in August but will sit for the second consecutive game Sunday. The 32-year-old may not be an everyday player down the stretch, but he should still see regular action, especially in left field, with Michael Brantley (shoulder) out for the season. Chas McCormick will start in left and bat seventh in the series finale versus the A's. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Took seat Sunday. Gurriel was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. Gurriel is 6-for-12 with a double, an RBI and four runs over the past three games but will head to the bench Sunday. Trey Mancini was at first base and batted sixth in the series finale versus Oakland. José Barrero gets key hit as Reds stop slide with win over Cubs. José Barrero hit a tiebreaking RBI single in Cincinnati's three-run fifth inning, and the Reds stopped a five-game slide with an 8-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. ''It meant a lot that I could contribute to the victory,'' Barrero said through an interpreter. ''I felt better today. I still have to work on a couple things. I'm working on cutting down on my swing and try to hit it up the middle.'' Barrero went 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a strikeout and also made a fielding error at short, his third of the year. The Cuban infielder is slashing .216/.216/.405 in only 10 games this year. Nationals' Yadiel Hernández: Not in Sunday's lineup. Hernández was not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres, according to Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com. Hernández went yard in Saturday's contest, but he will get a day off after making six straight starts. Alex Call got to cover left field in Hernández's place. Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Did not start Sunday. Iglesias was not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. Iglesias went hitless over the last two games after going 27-for-65 (.415) over his previous 17 contests, so manager Bud Black decided it was time for a day off. Garrett Hampson started at shortstop in Iglesias' place. Aug 14, 2022 Yadiel Hernández clobbered a two-run homer as the Nationals rallied to beat the Padres on Saturday evening in Washington. Hernández finally got the Nationals on the board with his mammoth 402-foot shot off of Padres right-hander Yu Darvish in the sixth inning, pulling the Nationals to within a run at 3-2. He finished the night 1-for-3 and is now hitting .268/.312/.414 with nine homers and 40 RBI on the season. Luis Robert (wrist) was held out of the White Sox starting lineup for Saturday's showdown against the Tigers. The superstar center fielder suffered a sprained left wrist on a stolen base attempt during Friday's ballgame. The good news -- at least as of now -- is that he hasn't been placed on the injured list and should still be considered day-to-day. AJ Pollock is starting in his place in center field and batting leadoff against Matt Manning and the Tigers on Saturday evening in Chicago. Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Tallies 17th save. Iglesias allowed a walk but retired the final two batters of the game to earn the save in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Marlins. Iglesias was called upon to protect a four-run lead with runners on first and second, which he did successfully to record his 17th save of the season and first since joining Atlanta. Kenley Jansen was unavailable after earning the save in the first game of the twin bill, and Kirby Yates allowed two of the first three batters he faced to reach base prior to giving way to Iglesias. Since July 14, Iglesias has turned in scoreless efforts in 10 of his 11 appearances. Overall, he has a 3.70 ERA with a 55:10 K:BB across 41.1 innings on the campaign.

  • MLB 2022 | Arozarena homers, Luis Robert removed from Friday's game, Heredia recalled, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 12, 2022 Randy Arozarena went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's loss to the Orioles. Facing a seven-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth, Arozarena slapped a 390-foot two-run home run to left field. He's now homered in two straight games. For Arozarena was his 14th home run of the season. He is slashing .256/.315/.428 this year. White Sox's Luis Robert: Suffers sprained wrist. Robert left Friday's game against the Tigers with a sprained left wrist, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reported. X-rays were negative, so Robert appears to have avoided the worst-case scenario, but it's still possible he misses time. That would be a big blow to the White Sox, who remain in the thick of a playoff race, as Robert increased his slash line to .301/.336/.454 with a pair of hits prior to the injury. Cionel Pérez pitched a perfect 8th against the Tigers on Thursday. Cionel pitched a perfect 8th inning against the Tigers with two strikeouts. Cionel threw 15 pitches, 8 of them for strikes for his 10th consecutive scoreless innings. Cionel is 6-1 with a 1.12 ERA this year and 40 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings. Braves recalled OF Guillermo Heredia from Triple-A Gwinnett. With Ehire Adrianza heading to the injured list -- without a designation -- Heredia will add some depth on the Braves bench for at least a couple of days. The 31-year-old has hit just .138/.211/.338 with three homers and six RBI in 71 plate appearances with the Braves this season. Blue Jays' Yosver Zulueta: Battling knee, shoulder injuries. Zulueta was placed on the 7-day injured list at Double-A New Hampshire on Friday due to right knee inflammation and shoulder soreness, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. Zulueta hasn't seen the field for the Fisher Cats since Aug. 2, and he'll now be sidelined for at least another week. The 24-year-old was promoted to Double-A in late June and has a 4.35 ERA and 16:10 K:BB across 10.1 innings. It's unclear if he'll spend more than the minimum of seven days on the shelf. Yankees' Clay Holmes: May lose closer job. Holmes blew his fifth save of the season Friday against the Red Sox, allowing one run on a hit and two walks in a third of an inning, leading the Yankees to consider removing him from the closer role, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reported. Holmes entered the game in the bottom of the ninth with a 2-1 lead, but he exited it after retiring just one batter, as J.D. Martinez tied the game with an RBI single after a pair of walks. Holmes' last save came back on July 22, and he's now blown two saves since then. His ERA now sits at a far more human 2.39 after it sat at a ridiculous 0.28 as late in the year as June 19. Whether or not he'll get the Yankees' next save chance is unclear. If removed, Aroldis Chapman is expected to return to his original closer role. Aug 11, 2022 White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Delivers rare homer. Grandal went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run Thursday against the Royals. Grandal took Jose Cuas yard in the eighth inning to tally his third homer of the season. It was his first long ball since May 16, and he has only four extra-base hits -- including Thursday's effort -- across 123 at-bats in that span. That has led to a disappointing .204/.300/.265 line for Grandal across 263 plate appearances on the season. Yuli Gurriel went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored Thursday against the Rangers. Gurriel is playing quite a bit more than Trey Mancini at the moment, which makes one wonder just how bad Mancini's situation would be right now if not for Michael Brantley's injury. In spite of the nice game today, Gurriel is still hitting just .247 with no homers and five RBI in 73 at-bats since the All-Star break. He hasn't sported even a .700 OPS since the second game of the season. Astros' Yordan Álvarez: Sat out Thursday. Álvarez is not in the starting lineup Thursday against the Rangers. Álvarez will get a breather as he's in the middle of a cold stretch at the plate, batting .146 with two extra-base hits over his last 11 games, though he did hit a home run Wednesday. Trey Mancini will take over at designated hitter and bat sixth in the series finale.

  • MLB 2022 | Cortés with no-decision, Arozarena belts 13th homer, Díaz's Grand Slam, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 10, 2022 Néstor Cortés logged a quality start in a no-decision against the Mariners on Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits over his six-plus innings of work. The 27-year-old southpaw piled up 10 strikeouts on the afternoon while issuing only one free pass. Cortés navigated the first five innings unscathed until he served up a solo homer to Sam Haggerty in the sixth. He then returned for the seventh and allowed the first two hitters to reach before turning the ball over to the bullpen -- and both runs eventually scored. Cortés generated 18 swinging strikes in the contest while posting an elite CSW of 38 percent. He'll carry a tremendous 2.67 ERA and 1.00 WHIP into Tuesday's battle against the Rays. Randy Arozarena launched his 13th home run Wednesday in Milwaukee. Arozarena took advantage of a misplaced changeup from Brandon Woodruff in the seventh inning, clobbering it 431 feet to put the Rays ahead at the time. It was his 13th home run of the season and first in the second half. Astros' Aledmys Díaz: Sitting Wednesday. Díaz was not in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Rangers. Díaz got a day off after he went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Tuesday's win. Chas McCormick took over in left field and batted seventh versus Texas. Aug 9, 2022 White Sox's Yoán Moncada: Smacks sixth homer. Moncada went 1-for-7 with a home run and two RBI across both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals. Moncada tallied his sixth home run of the season in the second game of the doubleheader. It was his first home run since the All-Star break, and he's hit just .148 with nine RBI and four runs scored across 17 starts. That stretch continues a disappointing season for Moncada, as he's now hitting just .197/.258/.322 across 260 plate appearances. Astros' Yordan Álvarez: In midst of cold spell. Álvarez went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Rangers. Though Álvarez hasn't reported any renewed soreness in his hand after he required a stint on the injured list shortly before the All-Star break, the slugger has nonetheless seen his production taper off of late. While starting in each of Houston's last 10 games, Álvarez has hit .139 with one extra-base hit (a double) and 5:9 BB:K. The Astros will continue to let Álvarez work through his struggles, as he'll stick in the lineup Wednesday as the team's designated hitter and No. 3 batter. White Sox's Luis Robert: On bench for nightcap. Robert was not in the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader at Kansas City, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reported. Robert went 1-for-4 during Game 1 and will head to the bench for Game 2 of the twin bill. Adam Engel will man center field and bat eighth in the nightcap. Aledmys Díaz went 1-for-4 with a grand slam on Tuesday as the Astros took down the Rangers. Díaz went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Rangers. Diíaz's fourth-inning blast off Martin Perez was his second grand slam of the season and helped the Astros dig out of an early 4-0 hole. The 32-year-old was making his third consecutive start at a different position Wednesday, but he'll likely see the bulk of his opportunities in left field moving forward. Chas McCormick looks to be the primary threat to Díaz's playing time, though the Astros could soon give trade-deadline pickup Trey Mancini some exposure to the corner outfield. Yandy Díaz went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's loss to the Brewers. Díaz's 106.7-mph, 421-foot two-run home run in the top of the third tied the game up at 2-2. He's batting .277 with six home runs and a steal over 336 at-bats. He entered the game hitless across his last five starts -- spanning 19 at-bats -- and has struggled to a .185 batting average in 14 games since the All-Star break. Even so, Díaz remains the Rays' primary leadoff hitter, and he is hitting .277/.392/.393 across 401 plate appearances for the season. Yoán Moncada went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals. Moncada's 426-foot leadoff home run in the top of the sixth gave the White Sox a one-run lead. The veteran third baseman has an uninspiring .197 batting average in 239 at-bats. Luis Robert did not play the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals. Robert was out of the White Sox' starting lineup for the opening contest of Tuesday's twin bill in Kansas City, but got the nightcap off to rest and recover heading into Wednesday's series finale. Rockies' José Iglesias: Three hits in blowout win. Iglesias went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 16-5 win over the Cardinals. Iglesias received a breather Sunday, but it didn't slow him down at the plate. The infielder's three-hit effort Tuesday was already his third in eight games in August, and he's batted .412 (14-for-34) this month. The 31-year-old still isn't much of a power threat with just three home runs this season, but he's maintained a .316/.358/.417 slash line with 41 RBI, 42 runs scored, two stolen bases, and 26 doubles through 94 contests as the Rockies' starting shortstop.

  • MLB 2022 | Gurriel hitting streak continues, Vargas demoted, Heredia optioned, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 7, 2022 Dodgers optioned INF/OF Miguel Vargas to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The corresponding move is expected to be Justin Turner (abdomen) coming off the injured list Tuesday. Vargas wound up starting just two of six games during his first stint in the majors, as it became clear he wasn't going to be up for the long haul. He'll return to a .291/.382/.497 line at OKC. Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Extends hit streak to eight games. Gurriel went 2-for-5 with one double and one RBI in Sunday's 3-2 win over Minnesota. The Toronto leadoff man stayed hot at the dish Sunday, extending his hitting streak to eight games and raising his batting average to .312 in the process. Gurriel has hit .375 since the beginning of July, up from .285 in the first three months of the season. While he has lowered his strikeout rate to 14 percent since July from 18 percent earlier this season, his strong performance is driven by a .435 BABIP since the beginning of July. Jose Barrero followed up Saturday's two-homer game by striking out all four times he was up Sunday against the Brewers. Barrero's homers yesterday are his only hits in four games since his callup. He's struck out eight times in 14 at-bats so far, leaving him with a 51/4 K/BB ratio in 138 major league plate appearances since he debuted in 2020. Yordan Alvarez went 0-for-3 against the Guardians on Sunday. Alvarez and the Astros were shut out by Tristan McKenzie and the Guardians on Sunday. He went hitless in the contest, but had quite a bit of bad luck as all three batted balls were hit at over 103 miles per hour with each having an expected batting average of at least .550. Even his bad days are impressive. Braves optioned OF Guillermo Heredia to Triple-A Gwinnett. In a flurry of roster moves Sunday morning, the Braves sent outfielder Guillermo Heredia to Triple-A. He has hit just .138/.211/.338 with three homers over 71 plate appearances. Chadwick Tromp was selected in the corresponding move. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Rested Sunday. Grandal is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers. Grandal will take a seat for the series finale after he started in each of the White Sox's last three games, two at catcher and one as a designated hitter. Seby Zavala will get the nod behind the plate Sunday while Jose Abreu handles DH duties. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Idle Sunday Gurriel was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians. He took a seat for the second time in less than a week, allowing Trey Mancini to pick up a start at first base. The move to the bench comes after Gurriel went 1-for-14 with an RBI in the first three games of the series in Cleveland. Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Steps out of lineup. Iglesias is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. Iglesias started the past 12 games and will receive Sunday off after producing a .391/.451/.522 slash line with six doubles, six RBI and eight runs during that span. Garrett Hampson will take over at shortstop Sunday in Arizona. Aug 6, 2022 Adolis García went 2-for-4 with five RBI in Saturday's win over the White Sox. After driving in two on a 105.6-mph base hit in the bottom of the third, Garcia cleared the bases with his 107-mph two-bagger in the bottom of the seventh. The toolsy outfielder is hitting .247 with 18 home runs and 15 stolen bases (405 at-bats). White Sox's Luis Robert: Sits as expected. Robert will sat as expected Saturday against the Rangers. The White Sox are being cautious with Robert as he returns from a bout of lightheadedness that wound up costing him nearly three weeks. He was activated off the injured list Tuesday but didn't start a game until Thursday, when he served as the designated hitter. He started in center field Friday but will have a scheduled off day Saturday, with AJ Pollock handling the position in his absence. Rays' Yandy Diaz: Headed to bench. Diaz sat Saturday against the Tigers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Diaz has gone hitless in his last four games but still owns a strong .280/.393/.389 slash line overall. Yu Chang will get the start at third base Saturday. Astros' Aledmys Diaz: Filled in for Altuve. Diaz started at second base, batted second in Sunday's game against the Guardians, and went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. After a one-game absence due to a sore ring finger, Diaz checked back into the lineup for Saturday's 4-1 loss, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles an an RBI. He'll make his second straight start in the middle infield, this time replacing a resting Jose Altuve after spelling Jeremy Pena on Saturday. Moving forward, Diaz is projected to see most of his playing time in left field while the Astros wait for Michael Brantley (shoulder) to return from the injured list. Mets' Yoan Lopez: Headed back to minors. The Mets returned Lopez to Triple-A Syracuse following Saturday's doubleheader with Atlanta. Lopez appeared in the Mets' 8-5 win in the first game of the twin bill and recorded just one out while allowing three earned runs on four hits. The 29-year-old right-hander owns a 5.73 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 11 innings with the big club this season.

  • MLB 2022 | Chapman back in closer role, Cortés no decision, Luis Robert is back, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Aug 6, 2022 Aledmys Díaz (thumb) is back in the Astros' starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Guardians. Díaz wound up missing just one contest due to a minor left thumb injury that he sustained during an outfield collision during Thursday's matchup against Cleveland. Luis Robert is not in the White Sox' starting lineup for Saturday's contest against the Rangers. Robert made his return to the White Sox' starting lineup on Friday following a three-week absence and will get a day off on Saturday evening to rest and recover. It appears to be a routine day off to try to manage his workload. AJ Pollock will take over in center field with Gavin Sheets in right field and Andrew Vaughn in left field. Yoan López will serve as the Mets' 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader against the Braves. López provides the Mets with some extra bullpen depth for Saturday's twin bill against the Braves. The 29-year-old righty has registered a solid 3.38 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 10/5 K/BB ratio across 10 2/3 innings (seven appearances) this season in the majors. Rays' Yandy Diaz: Heads to bench. Diaz will sit Saturday against the Tigers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Diaz has gone hitless in his last four games but still owns a strong .280/.393/.389 slash line overall. Yu Chang will get the start at third base Saturday. Rays' Randy Arozarena: Gets Saturday off. Arozarena will sit Saturday against Detroit, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Arozarena has swung a hot bat over his last 16 games, slashing .317/.379/.467 while adding a pair of homers and three steals. He'll get a rest Saturday, with David Peralta and Luke Raley handling the outfield corners. Aug 5, 2022 Aledmys Díaz was held out of the Astros' starting lineup for Friday's contest against the Guardians due to a left thumb injury. X-rays came back negative and Díaz is considered day-to-day after injuring his left thumb in an outfield collision during Thursday's contest against Cleveland. It doesn't sound like a serious concern and there's a chance he's back this weekend. Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Was lined up to close. Chapman would have closed Friday's game against the Cardinals if Clay Holmes had held the one-run lead in the eighth inning, according to manager Aaron Boone, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. Holmes came on to pitch the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead and proceeded to give up two runs, denying Chapman a save opportunity in the ninth inning. Chapman has a 6.10 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 14 strikeouts in 10.1 innings across 12 appearances since he returned to action July 2. Néstor Cortés yielded two runs and one hit over 5 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Cardinals. Cortés only gave up three hard-hit balls tonight and they all resulted in groundouts. He did walk four, which helped lead to his rather early exit. The Yankees also wanted to be aggressive with the pen tonight, as they had an off day yesterday and had barely used their best relievers in the days leading up to that. Unfortunately, the bullpen didn't come through in this one, as the team lost 4-3. Cortés will face the Mariners next. White Sox's Luis Robert: Reaches three times in return. Robert went 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored Thursday against the Rangers. Robert was in the lineup for the first time since July 15, and he hit second while serving as the designated hitter. He tallied his lone hit in the first inning and managed to score a run after a leadoff walk in the third frame. Robert could continue to get some regular rest after a lengthy absence caused by lightheadedness and blurred vision, but his return provides a boost to both fantasy managers and the White Sox's lineup. Across 328 plate appearances on the season, Robert has managed a .301/.338/.460 line with 12 homers and 11 stolen bases.
