  • MLB Postseason 2022 | Yordan hits three-run walk-off HR, Yuli also homered, Vargas with the Dodgers

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 Postseason. A compendium from several MLB sources. Oct 11, 2022 Yordan Álvarez played the role of hero on Tuesday, crushing a three-run walk-off homer off of Robbie Ray to give the Astros an improbable 8-7 come-from-behind victory in Game 1 of the ALDS. The Astros entered the eighth inning trailing 7-3, but a two-run home run by Alex Bregman cut that deficit in half. They were tasked with facing Mariners closer Paul Sewald in the ninth and things got interesting as David Hensley was plunked with one out, then Jeremy Pena smacked a two-out single to put the tying runs on base. That's when Mariners manager Scott Servais called upon Robbie Ray to face Álvarez. After fouling off a first-pitch sinker, the 25-year-old slugger obliterated the next one from Ray, crushing a 438-foot series-changing blast. He also had a two-run double in the third inning, finishing the day 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and five RBI. Yuli Gurriel went 3-for-4 and blasted a solo home run on Tuesday, as the Astros rallied to beat the Mariners in Game 1 of the ALDS. Gurriel smacked his 373-foot solo shot off of Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert in the fourth inning, pulling the Astros to within three runs at 6-3. He also had two-out singles in the second and eighth innings -- but wound up stranded at first both times. The Astros will now will now look to ride the momentum of an unbelievable comeback victory in what will be a critical Game 2 in Houston on Thursday. Miguel Vargas has made the Dodgers' National League Division Series roster. Vargas is arguably the biggest surprise on the Dodgers' postseason roster as he gets the nod over super utility specialist Hanser Alberto. The 22-year-old top prospect tore the cover off the ball this season at Triple-A Oklahoma City and gives Los Angeles some extra pop off the bench for their best-of-five series against the division-rival Padres. Aroldis Chapman has been left off the Yankees' American League Division Series roster. Chapman's tenure in New York has officially come to an end. The 34-year-old left-hander skipped a workout session earlier over the weekend and was told that he would be left off the team's playoff roster. Two days prior to the decision Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Aroldis Chapman was scheduled to throw a batting practice session on Friday but skipped it and returned to his home in Miami. Boone said that Chapman had a decent shot of making the ALDS roster but missed the chance to pitch this postseason after missing the mandatory workout. The veteran reliever has had a disappointing season with a 4.46 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 43/28 K/BB ratio across 36 1/3 innings. Chapman is a free agent after the season and with his performance on and off the field, he could have a difficult time landing with a new team next season.

  • MLB 2022 | Oviedo allowed three runs, Gurriel Jr. had workout Wednesday, Díaz resting, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Oct 5, 2022 Johan Oviedo permitted three runs -- two earned -- over four innings Wednesday as the Pirates beat the Cardinals 5-3. Oviedo struck out just one and induced only three swinging strikes on 61 pitches. The good news is he didn't issue any walks. Command and control will be the key if Oviedo is ever able to break out, as his stuff plays. He finishes the season with a 3.21 ERA over 21 appearances (eight starts). Yoán Moncada went 1-for-5 on Wednesday in the White Sox' lopsided defeat at the hands of the Twins. It was a forgettable, injury-plagued campaign overall for Moncada, who finishes with a calamitous .212/.273/.353 batting line to go along with just 41 runs scored, 12 home runs, 51 RBI and two stolen bases across 433 plate appearances in 104 games. The 27-year-old third baseman was one of the most exciting young players in baseball just a few years ago, but has faded from fantasy relevance over the last three years as his over-the-fence pop has declined and his ability to steal bases has completely evaporated. José Abreu was not in the White Sox starting lineup Wednesday versus the Twins. Abreu went 1-for-3 with a double and a run during Tuesday's 8-3 win, and it will apparently be his final start of 2022. Through 156 games this year he has a .304/.378/.446 slash line with 40 doubles, 15 home runs, 75 RBI and 85 runs in 157 games. The veteran first baseman is finishing up his ninth season with the White Sox but is slated to hit free agency during the offseason. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) is back in Toronto taking live batting practice and doing fielding work. Gurriel (hamstring) took live batting practice and was involved in defensive drills Wednesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reported. He has been on the injured list since September 8 because of a left hamstring strain. Gurriel wasn't activated from the 10-day injured list when the Blue Jays close out their regular season Wednesday with a doubleheader in Baltimore, but he could be a candidate to return to action when Toronto begins its wild-card round series with Seattle on Friday. The 28-year-old slashed .291/.343/.400 with five home runs, three stolen bases, 52 RBI and 52 runs in 121 games before landing on the shelf Sept. 9 with the left hamstring strain. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Riding pine Wednesday. Grandal didn't start Wednesday against the Twins, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Grandal went 1-for-4 with a run Tuesday against Minnesota and was in the bench for the fourth time in the last six games. Carlos Pérez started behind the plate and batted ninth. Braves' Guillermo Heredia: Added three hits. Heredia went 3-for-5 on Wednesday's 12-9 loss to the Marlins. The last day of the season Heredia added his third double of the year, two RBI (8) and scored once, leaving his slash line in .158/.220/.342 for the year. Heredia played only 76 games with the Braves this year and is expected to be back in the postseason roster. Rays' Yandy Diaz: Retreated to bench. Díaz wasn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported. Díaz started Tuesday against Boston and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. He went to the bench for the third time in the last four games while Jonathan Aranda took over at the hot corner and batted ninth. Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Took seat for finale. Iglesias didn't start Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reported. Iglesias went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Tuesday and went to the bench for the third time in the last four games. He ended the season with a solid slash line of .292/.328/.380 with 128 hits, 48 runs, 3 HR, 47 RBI, and 17 walks.

  • MLB 2022 | Álvarez three doubles game, Chapman perfect inning, Adolis reaches milestone, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Oct 5, 2022 White Sox's Jose Abreu: Set to sit Wednesday. Interim manager Miguel Cairo said Abreu won't start Wednesday's season finale against the Twins, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. Oct 4, 2022 Yordan Álvarez went 3-for-5 with three doubles and a pair of runs scored as the Astros demolished the Phillies on Tuesday evening in Houston. Álvarez doubled and rode home on Kyle Tucker's three-run blast as part of the Astros five-run uprising in the opening inning. He also smacked a double in the eighth inning and was driven in on an RBI single by Jake Meyers. The 25-year-old slugger has had another outstanding season at the dish, slashing a robust .304/.405/.612 with a career-high 37 homers and 96 RBI in 134 games. Aroldis Chapman worked a perfect seventh inning in the Yankees' defeat of the Rangers on Tuesday. Chapman went 1-2-3 with two strikeouts in the 14-pitch frame. He's struggled badly since his return from the injured list in mid-September, but this outing should help his odds of cracking the postseason roster. Adolis García went deep in Game 1 of doubleheader Tuesday reaching 100-RBI milestone. Adolis Garcia went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and two strikeouts in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Yankees. Garcia gave the Rangers a 4-3 lead with a two-run home run in the fifth inning off Jameson Taillon. It was García’s 27th homer of the season, bringing his RBI total to exactly 100 in 2022 - in the second game he collected his RBI #101 - after logging 90 in his rookie year in ‘21. He became the first Rangers hitter to log a 100-RBI season since Nomar Mazara in 2017. García also joins Iván Rodríguez and Alfonso Soriano as the only Texas hitters to log 25 homers, 25 stolen bases and 100 RBIs in a season. Yandy Díaz (shoulder) was back in the Rays' starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox. Díaz returned to Tampa Bay's lineup for their penultimate regular season contest at Fenway Park after missing 11 of the team's last 12 games due to an ongoing left shoulder issue. Díaz went 0-for-2 with a strikeout in a shortened (5 innings) 6-0 loss to the Red Sox. The 31-year-old on-base machine is hitting .296/.401/.423 with 71 runs scored, nine home runs, 57 RBI and three stolen bases across 558 plate appearances. Randy Arozarena got the day off on Tuesday against the Red Sox. Arozarena got a rare day off for the Rays' penultimate regular season contest. It was versatile Vidal Bruján who got a chance in right field on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

  • MLB 2022 | Cano rejoins O's bullpen but ineffective, Díaz bothered by shoulder, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Oct 3, 2022 Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) did some running and other baseball activities "at a better intensity level" Monday, per Blue Jays interim manager John Schneider. It looks like Gurriel has a good shot to be back for the start of the postseason and he could even get in a little regular season action this week to knock some rust off. He's been out since early September with a left hamstring strain. Orioles' Yennier Cano: Rejoined big-league bullpen. The Orioles recalled Cano from Triple-A Norfolk on Monday. He rejoined the Baltimore bullpen as a replacement for closer Félix Bautista (knee), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Dillon Tate is likely the leading candidate to get the first crack at any save chances the Orioles get over the final three games of the season. On Monday's night against the Blue Jays, Cano allowed Matt Chapman's 2-out RBI single to give the Jays a 5-1 lead. He pitched 2/3 innings allowing two hits, one earned run, with two walks and a strikeout. His ERA this year is an enormous 12.38. Astros' Yulieski Gurriel, Yordan Álvarez, and Aledmis Díaz: One hit on Monday. Gurriel, Álvarez, and Díaz went 1-for-8 combined on Monday's 3-0 loss to the Phillies. Díaz struck out once while Álvarez took two strikeouts. Yandy Díaz (shoulder) is absent from the Rays' starting lineup for Monday's series opener against the Red Sox. Díaz has missed 11 of the Rays' last 12 games due to a lingering left shoulder issue and will sit out Monday's series opener at Fenway Park. It seems highly unlikely that he'll return before the regular season wraps up later this week. It'll be Isaac Paredes taking over at the hot corner in his absence. Ray's Randy Arozarena: Hitless on Monday. Arozarena went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Monday in a 4-3 loss to the Red Sox. Arozarena slash line is now .262/.326/.445 with 20 HR, 89 RBI, and 32 steals in 44 attempts. He will be key in Ray's 2022 lineup postseason. White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Did not start Monday. Abreu and Moncada: One hit. Grandal wasn't in the lineup Monday against the Twins. Grandal's playing time has decreased recently, and he'll be on the bench for the third time in the last four games. Carlos Pérez started behind the plate and batted ninth. In the same game José Abreu and Yoán Moncada went 1-for-7 combined. Abreu added his double #39 of the year and also walked. Moncada took two strikeouts reaching 113 in 102 games this year. Reds' José Barrero: Playing time on rise. Barrero started at shortstop and batted eighth in Monday's game against the Cubs. He went 0-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, a run, and a strikeout. Before resting in Sunday's 8-1 loss to Chicago, Barrero had started in each of the past five games. He was back in the lineup as the series with the Cubs shifted to Cincinnati, but the 24-year-old hasn't done much to prove that he's deserving of a full-time role heading into 2023. Over his last 13 games, Barrero has gone 5-for-43 with a 48.8 percent strikeout rate. Rockies' José Iglesias: Was not in Monday's lineup. Iglesias wasn't in Monday's lineup against the Dodgers. Iglesias has gone 1-for-12 with a strikeout over three games since returning from the injured list, and headed to the bench for a second consecutive matchup. Brendan Rodgers served as the designated hitter and batted third. Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Control struggles continue. Chapman (3-4) took the loss against Baltimore on Sunday, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks in one-third of an inning. The only out he recorded was by strikeout. Chapman entered with the score tied 1-1 in the seventh inning and allowed a leadoff single. He then issued two walks to load the bases before striking out Ryan Mountcastle. The veteran reliever couldn't follow up on that successful out, however, as he next walked Gunnar Henderson to allow the go-ahead run to cross the plate. Altogether, Chapman tossed just 12 of 26 pitches for strikes, and this was the fourth time in his past eight outings that he's walked multiple batters. He's posted an awful 7.1 BB/9 over 35.1 innings on the season, and Bryan Hoch of MLB.com suggests that Chapman is in danger of missing out on the Yankees' postseason roster.

  • MLB 2022 | Iglesias effective in sweep, Gurriel two more singles, Chapman's erratic outing, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Oct 2, 2022 Braves' Rasiel Iglesias: Effective in Braves sweep over the Mets. Raisel Iglesias pitched a scoreless inning in Braves 5-3 win over the Mets on Sunday night, completing a three games sweep that put Atlanta on the verge of its fifth consecutive National League East title. Iglesias used 13 pitches - 10 of them for strikes - for a scoreless seventh inning with the score already 5-3. The right-hander allowed a single but had no much trouble holding his 14 game of the season. With his outing Iglesias' ERA went down to 2.51 for the year, while his WHIP is now 0.97. Iglesias has been unbelievable for the Braves after coming over from the Angels with 25 1/3 IP, 27:4 K:BB, and a 0.36 ERA. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Two more hits on Sunday. It seems that Gurriel is getting ready for the 2022 postseason. On Sunday, the veteran infielder went 2-for-4 in a 3-1 victory against the Rays. It was his fourth consecutive game with at least a single. Gurriel ended the afternoon game with two singles, lifting his BA to .243 for the year, and in a positive sign for his team, he is now showing a slash line of .286/.310/.393 with 6 RBI in his last seven games. In the same game Yordan Álvarez went hitless in three at bats with a walk and a strikeout. Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters after Sunday's game that Yandy Díaz was held out of the lineup for the second consecutive game simply to rest. The Rays want him to be fully healthy and ready to go for the start of the postseason, so they're taking it easy on him down the stretch. Cash indicated that Díaz would only play in one game during their final series of the regular season against the the Red Sox that begins in Boston on Monday. José Iglesias was absent from the Rockies starting lineup on Sunday afternoon against the Dodgers. While Iglesias had played regularly at shortstop since returning from the injured list, he got a breather in this one. Ezequiel Tovar started in his place and hit eighth against Dodgers left-hander Tyler Anderson. Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Erratic, once again. Aroldis Chapman faced five hitters and allowed four to reach base in the seventh inning of New York’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Orioles. Chapman allowed one hit, two earned runs and three walks – including a bases-loaded pass to Gunnar Henderson that forced in the go-ahead run – before taking the loss in the Yankees’ final home game of the season. Afterward, Chapman didn’t have a specific explanation for his erratic outing. “Nothing in particular,” the 34-year-old said through an interpreter when asked about his control issues. “Haven’t been executing consistent strikes. Been something that has happened to me this season.” Chapman, who lost his job as the Yankees’ closer earlier this season, saw his ERA jump to 4.58 on Sunday. White Sox' Yoán Moncada and José Abreu: One hit combined on Sunday. Yoán Moncada and José Abreu went 1-for-7 on Sunday's 2-1 victory against the Padres. Moncada went hitless in four at bats with a strikeout while Abreu had a single, walked, and struck out. With the single Abreu's batting average is now .304 for the year. Oct 1, 2022 Yankees' Nestor Cortés: Dominates again in win. Cortés (12-4) earned the win Saturday, allowing one hit and two walks over 7.1 scoreless innings against the Orioles while striking out 12. Cortés put on a clinic Saturday, striking out seven of the first nine batters he faced while never allowing a runner to reach second base. He generated 20 swinging strikes and dominated Orioles hitters with his four-seamer all afternoon. The left-hander has now pitched 13.1 scoreless innings over his last two starts while allowing just two hits over that stretch. His 12 strikeouts Saturday also matched a career high. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Knocks in two. Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI on Friday against the Rays. Gurriel tallied two separate RBI knocks, including a single in the fourth inning and a double in the final frame. Despite hitting just .200 across his last 10 games, Gurriel has managed seven RBI in that span. He's maintained a .240/.286/.359 line across 567 plate appearances for the season. Astros' Yordan Álvarez: Two hits in return. Álvarez went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored Friday against the Rays. Álvarez missed one game due to an ankle injury, but he returned to extend his hitting streak to five games. Though he'll likely get some days off prior to the postseason, Álvarez is closing the regular season well by hitting .360 with 15 runs scored and 16 RBI across 22 games in September.

  • MLB 2022 | Abreu reaches 75 RBI, Adolis finally homers again, Vargas' big hit, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Sep 29, 2022 José Abreu went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead RBI double on Thursday, leading the White Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Twins. Abreu put the White Sox ahead for good in a low-scoring affair at Target Field in Minnesota with an RBI double to center field off Twins lefty reliever Caleb Thielbar. Chicago has already been officially eliminated from the playoff race, but Abreu's performance hasn't been one of the reasons for that development. The 35-year-old veteran first baseman is hitting a robust .306/.379/.447 with 84 runs scored, 15 home runs and 75 RBI across 663 plate appearances. Yandy Díaz (shoulder) told reporters he's "a little worried" about potentially not returning before the end of the season. Díaz also told reporters he's working hard and doing all of the treatments possible to help speed up the process. Díaz was set to return on Wednesday night but got scratched before first pitch and now also missed Thursday's series finale in Cleveland. He hasn't played a full game for the Rays since September 19. The infielder has been out with soreness in his left shoulder, and while considered day-to-day, it doesn't sound like he's going to be back in the lineup anytime soon -- relatively speaking. Rangers' Adolis García: Ends homer drought. García went 1-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Thursday's 10-9 extra-innings loss to the Mariners. García hit just .211 (8-for-38) with a triple, two doubles, four RBI, five runs and a stolen base in 11 games since his last homer. The outfielder has enjoyed a productive 2022 campaign with 26 homers, 25 stolen bases, 97 RBI, 86 runs scored, 31 doubles and five triples in 149 contests. He's also slashed a respectable .250/.301/.454 across 632 plate appearances. Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Hit tiebreaking single in win. Miguel Vargas went 1-for-2 with 3 RBI Thursday against the Padres. The rookie outfielder hit a tiebreaking, two-run single with the bases loaded in the sixth inning and the NL West champion Dodgers beat San Diego 5-2 on Thursday night to slow the Padres' playoff push. Vargas, who also had a sacrifice fly, made his big league debut on Aug. 3. Miguel Vargas is making a push to be included on the Los Angeles Dodgers' postseason roster and manager Dave Roberts said he is definitely in the mix. Yoán Moncada (foot) remained absent from the White Sox lineup Thursday. Moncada is considered day-to-day with a mild bone bruise in his left foot. The expectation is that he will be able to return to action at some point before the regular season comes to an end next Wednesday. Josh Harrison covered third base and hit eighth for the Pale Hose on Thursday afternoon in Minnesota. Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Not in Thursday's lineup. Iglesias didn't start Thursday against the Giants, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reported. Iglesias returned from the injured list for Wednesday's game against San Francisco and went 0-for-4. He went to the bench a day later while Elehuris Montero served as the designated hitter and batted seventh.

  • MLB 2022 | Iglesias activated, Chapman effective in relief, Moncada managing foot injury, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Sep 28, 2022 Rockies activated INF José Iglesias from the 10-day injured list. He'll replace the injured Charlie Blackmon (knee) on the Rockies active roster. Iglesias has been shelved since September 4 due to a right hand contusion. Before being shelved, the 32-year-old was hitting .300/.337/.392 with three homers, 47 RBI and two stolen bases in 451 plate appearances. Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Scoreless on Wednesday. In a hard to take 3-2 loss to the Nationals in extra innings, Raisel Iglesias pitched a scoreless inning for the Braves. With his outing Iglesias saw his ERA go down to 2.64 for the season, while in the last 15 games the righthander hasn't allowed an earned run in 14 2/3 innings. Iglesias will be a key arm for the Braves bullpen headed to the 2022 postseason, serving as a setup man for veteran closer Kenley Jansen. Rays manager Kevin Cash said after Wednesday's game that it's unlikely Yandy Díaz (shoulder) returns to the starting lineup on Thursday. Díaz made the initial lineup card on Wednesday night, but was scratched before the game due to continued soreness in his ailing left shoulder. Cash noted that Díaz felt the soreness while taking ground balls during pregame work and that it's unlikely he'll be able to give it a go on Thursday. He should still be considered day-to-day. White Sox's José Abreu: Two hits in Sox's 8th straight loss. Abreu went 2-for-3 with his double #37 of the year and 300 of his MLB career, in a 8-4 loss to the Twins on Wednesday. Abreu also added his RBI #74 of the year while his BA was lifted to .305 (178-584). In the same game Yasmani Grandal went 1-for-4 with his RBI #27 of the season. It was the 8th straight loss for the White Sox, a team that lacked total chemistry during the season. Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Could still provide relief value. On a night entirely dedicated to Aaron Judge and his 61st HR record - video below -, Aroldis Chapman showed some signs that he can still be a valuable reliever heading to the postseason. Chapman completed a shutout inning on Wednesday night, using 13 pitches - 11 of them for strikes - and striking out two while reducing his ERA to 4.24 for the year. Chapman was in complete control last night and after retiring Matt Chapman, he was even more effective with the other two batters he faced, closing out the last game of the regular season against Toronto with a 8-3 victory. With closer Clay Holmes experiencing few hiccups lately, Chapman could use the postseason to show that he could - again - be the primary ninth inning man for the 2022 AL East champions. Yordan Álvarez (ankle) was not in the Astros' starting lineup Wednesday. No surprise after he rolled his left ankle on Tuesday night. X-rays came back negative for any structural damage, though, and the 25-year-old slugger should be ready to rock following Thursday's scheduled team off day. Christian Vázquez took a turn at DH on Wednesday versus the Diamondbacks. Astros' Aledmis Díaz: Hitless on Wednesday. Díaz went 0-for-5 in a 5-2 loss to the D-backs on Wednesday night. Díaz batted second and played second base and the left field, in the absence of outfielders Yordan Álvarez and infielder José Altuve. Díaz, a utility man for the Astros, is slashing .251/.297/.419 with 12 HR, and 38 RBI this year. A's Norge Ruíz: Total disaster against the Angels. Norge Ruíz was a disaster in his relief outing this Wednesday against the Angels. In a 4-1 loss to the Angels, Ruíz took the mound in the 6th inning, loading the bases allowing a single and walking two batters. He was immediately replaced and his relief, Kirby Snead, prevented more runs retiring the inning without major complications. Ruíz has been a disaster since he was promoted to the Majors back in August 19, exhibiting 6.61 ERA in 16 1/3 innings while hitters collect a .343 BA against him. Yoán Moncada was held out of the White Sox starting lineup on Wednesday due to a bone bruise on his left foot. The 27-year-old sustained the injury when he fouled a ball off his foot during Tuesday's game -- though fortunately X-rays came back negative for any fractures. Moncada has actually shown some signs of life at the plate recently after a brutal start to the season -- slashing .288/.329/.538 with five homers and nine RBI over his last 19 ballgames. Josh Harrison covered third base in his absence and batted eighth for the White Sox on Wednesday. Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Not yet running bases. Gurriel (hamstring) hasn't yet resumed running the bases, Ethan Diamandas of Sports Illustrated reported. Gurriel recently ramped up his workload by doing some hitting and throwing, and he was also able to begin a running progression. However, he hasn't yet been cleared to run the bases. The team hopes that he'll be able to do so Friday, which could put him on track for a return late in the regular season or early in the playoffs. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Retreated to bench. Gurriel wasn't in the starting lineup Wednesday against Arizona. Gurriel went 3-for-17 with a double, four RBI, a run, a walk and three strikeouts over the last four games and will get a breather Wednesday. Trey Mancini took over at first base and batted sixth.

  • MLB 2022 | Yordan X-rays came back clean, Cionel pitched scoreless inning, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Sep 27, 2022 X-rays came back clean on Yordan Álvarez's left ankle. Álvarez was pulled from Tuesday night's game against the Diamondbacks in the bottom of the fifth inning after rolling his ankle on a single in the bottom of the first. "Hopefully he’ll be ready in a couple of days," said Astros manager Dusty Baker. Álvarez entered Tuesday with a .303/.407/.614 season slash line. The 25-year-old slugger is almost certainly going to sit out of Wednesday's series finale versus the D-backs. Houston is off Thursday. Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Some troubles but another "clean" inning on Tuesday. Pérez ran into trouble on Tuesday's 13-9 loss against the Red Sox but was able to pitch a "clean" inning. Pérez allowed a hit and walked a batter before completing a scoreless inning. He also struck out one. Pérez left his ERA in 1.29 for the season with 51 SO in 55.2 innings. Yasmani Grandal went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts as the White Sox were shut out by the Twins on Tuesday night in Minnesota. It was the seventh consecutive loss for the White Sox -- and this one was a particularly poor showing on the offensive end, as the team tallied just two hits and zero runs off of Bailey Ober and company. Grandal struck out twice in the contest -- though every batter in the White Sox lineup struck out at least once, and Grandal was one of five that went down on strikes twice in the game. He sports a miserable .201/.302/.272 slash line with five homers and 26 RBI in 361 plate appearances on the season. In the same game, José Abreu and Yoán Moncada went 1-for-6 combined. Abreu went hitless with a strikeout while Moncada was 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Ray's Randy Arozarena: Hitless against Cleveland. Randy Arozarena went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts on Monday's 6-5 victory over the Guardians. The outfielder left his slash line in .270/.332/.457 with 20 HR, 32 stolen bases, and 88 RBI. Astros' Yuli Gurriel: One hit on Tuesday against the D-backs. Gurriel, playing a miserable season, went 1-for-4 on Tuesday's 10-2 victory over the D-backs. Gurriel added a single for his RBI #51 of the year and he also walked. The veteran infielder is having the worst season of his MLB career, slashing .238/.284/.356 with 8 HR, 51 RBI, only 29 walks, and 72 SO in 140 games. Yandy Díaz (shoulder) remained out of the Rays' starting lineup for Tuesday's series opener against the Guardians. Díaz appears poised to miss his seventh consecutive game on Tuesday evening in Cleveland. The 31-year-old on-base machine received a cortisone injection last week do deal with left shoulder soreness and needs some additional time off to rest and recover. He's avoided a trip to the injured list and should be ready to fully return sometime this week. Late in the game Díaz pinched hit and went 0-for-1.

  • MLB 2022 | Gurriel Jr. and Díaz are progressing, Barrero hitless on Monday, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Sep 26, 2022 Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel: Continuing baseball activities. Gurriel (hamstring) did some hitting and throwing Monday while working through a running progression, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reported. Gurriel is with the Blue Jays in Toronto, and the team hopes that he'll be able to return prior to the end of the regular season. However, it's not yet clear when he'll ultimately be activated from the injured list or whether he'll require a rehab assignment prior to returning. Red's José Barrero: Hitless on Monday. Barrero continues his terrible season at bat and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on Monday's 8-3 loss to the Pirates. The young shortstop is slashing .153/.187/.208 for the year while in the last seven games his slash line is just triple .087 with 11 strikeouts in 23 AB. Ray's Yandy Díaz: Should be back soon. Yandy Díaz has missed the Rays’ last six games due to a sore shoulder, but the infielder told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times and other reporters that he is doing “a lot better” after getting a cortisone shot earlier last week. It doesn’t appear as though Díaz will require a trip to the injured list, but it also isn’t yet known when he might be back on the field. Díaz has been a big part of Tampa’s offense, hitting .292/.399/.419 over 549 plate appearances this year, resulting in an excellent 145 wRC+. Yadiel Hernández's future with the Nats isn't clear. Back in August the Nationals shifted Yadiel Hernández to the 60-day injured list, officially ending the outfielder’s season. Hernández was retroactively placed on the 10-day IL on August 19 due to a left calf strain, and his third MLB season saw the 34-year-old hit .269/.312/.410 with nine homers over 327 plate appearances. Hernández has spent much of his Nats tenure as the left-handed hitting side of an outfield platoon, posting roughly league-average offense since the start of the 2021 campaign. He is under team control through 2026, but given his age and the Nationals’ rebuild, it is possible the team might consider moving onto a younger option for next season.

  • MLB 2022 | Cortés shuts down Boston, Moncada homers, Chapman could be DFA by the Yankees, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Sep 25, 2022 Néstor Cortés fired six scoreless innings in an impressive victory over the Red Sox on Sunday night in New York. The left-hander allowed just one hit and two walks in the contest while striking out five. Technically, he worked a complete game in this one, as the game was called after six frames due to rain. Cortés got six swings and misses on 101 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 26 percent. Cortés' game score of 72 is his highest mark since May 26, as he's continued to pitch well but hasn't gone as deep into games, averaging just under 5.2 innings during 10 second-half starts. Now 11-4 on the season, the 27-year-old southpaw will carry a stellar 2.56 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 151/36 K/BB ratio into Saturday's matchup against the Orioles. Adolis García (wrist) returned to the Rangers starting lineup on Sunday against the Guardians. The 29-year-old was drilled by a 100.3 mph cutter from Emmanuel Clase on Friday night and sat out on Saturday due to soreness in his left wrist. He wound up going 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts and a sacrifice fly in the contest. On the season, he's slashing .251/.302/.455 with 25 homers, 96 RBI and 25 stolen bases. Yordan Álvarez came through with a go-ahead RBI sacrifice fly in the 11th inning on Sunday, lifting the Astros to a 6-3 win over the Orioles in an 11-inning marathon. Álvarez lifted a fly ball to center field against Orioles reliever Keegan Akin to spark a four-run outburst in the 11th inning and lift Houston to their 101st victory of the season. The 25-year-old fantasy superstar has put together a phenomenal 2022 campaign, hitting .303/.407/.614 with 92 runs scored, a career-high 37 home runs, 96 RBI and one stolen base in 536 plate appearances over 128 games. White Sox's Yoán Moncada: Homers in defeat. Moncada went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Sunday's 4-1 loss to Detroit. The White Sox were unable to generate much offensive production Sunday, but Moncada accounted for the team's lone run with his home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. He has three extra-base hits over his last five games, and he's gone 3-for-20 with two solo home runs, a double, a walk and four strikeouts over that stretch. Yandy Díaz (shoulder) missed his sixth consecutive game on Sunday. The 31-year-old received a cortisone injection and reported feeling much improvement on Saturday. It sounds like he's only a couple of days from returning to his spot atop the Rays lineup. Yankees considering designating Aroldis Chapman for assignment. The New York Yankees are "at least contemplating" designating left-handed reliever Aroldis Chapman for assignment, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Yankees' decision boils down to whether or not they think Chapman's mechanical woes can be corrected over the next week -- and then if they'd be willing to carry him on their postseason roster. Sherman also suggests that the Yankees have no plan to bring Chapman, an impending free agent, back for next season. Chapman, 34 years old, used to be one of the top relievers in the majors. He's struggled this season, posting a 4.36 ERA (90 ERA+) and a 1.52 strikeout-to-walk ratio over the course of 33 innings pitched. He's seen his velocity drop more than a mile per hour this season compared to last, and he's required a pair of trips to the injured list. Chapman only returned to the active roster in mid-September after missing several weeks because of an infected wound from a recent tattoo he received. White Sox's José Abreu: Rare day off Sunday. Abreu was not in Sunday's lineup against the Tigers. This was Abreu's first day off this month. Andrew Vaughn started at first base while Adam Engel entered the outfield mix. White Sox's Luis Robert: Ruled out for season. Robert (wrist) won't play again in 2022, James Fegan of The Athletic reported. Robert was placed not he 10-day IL with a left wrist sprain Saturday, and the White Sox will keep him sidelined for the final week and a half of the regular season. The 25-year-old appeared in just 98 games this year while battling injuries, and he slashed .284/.319/.426 with 12 home runs, 56 RBI, 54 runs and 11 stolen bases. Mark Payton was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to provide additional outfield depth for the White Sox down the stretch. Reds' José Barrero: On bench again Sunday. Barrero was not in the lineup Sunday against the Brewers. Barrero is 6-for-44 with 22 strikeouts in his past 12 appearances and finds himself on the bench Sunday for the third time in Cincinnati's past four games. Kyle Farmer will shift to shortstop while Spencer Steer mans the hot corner. Sep 24, 2022 Miguel Vargas hit a two-run homer Saturday in a 6-2 victory for the Dodgers over the Cardinals. Congrats to Vargas on his first MLB homer. The 22-year-old connected on the blast off Jordan Montgomery with a runner on. Vargas has mostly struggled to start his MLB career, but his upside competes with most infield prospects in the sport. There are many more bright days ahead. Randy Arozarena went 2-for-4 with his 40th double of the season as the Rays fell to the Blue Jays on Saturday evening in Tampa Bay. The 27-year-old smacked a two-out double off of Alek Manoah in the fourth inning, but wound up stranded at second base. He also singled in the seventh. He's having quite a productive season at the plate, slashing a terrific .273/.336/.460 with 20 homers, 40 doubles, 87 RBI and 32 stolen bases on the year. Johan Oviedo delivered a dominant performance in Saturday's victory over the Cubs, matching his career-high with seven strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. The right-hander scattered just three hits on the night and did not walk a batter. Oviedo generated nine swings and misses on 82 pitches in the game -- seven of those on his slider -- while posting a CSW of 33 percent. The 24-year-old hurler holds an impressive 3.13 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 49/21 K/BB ratio over 46 innings between the Pirates and Cardinals this season. He'll take on his former club his next time out in St. Louis on Friday night where he makes for an interesting streaming option in deeper mixed leagues. White Sox placed OF Luis Robert on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist sprain. The White Sox have finally elected to give Robert an extended break and he's likely out for the remainder of the regular season. The 25-year-old outfielder had sat out six of the White Sox' previous eight contests, including three straight games, due to an ongoing soreness in his left wrist. It was a frustrating situation for fantasy managers, but Robert certainly deserves credit for attempting to play through the lingering issue rather than shutting it down a few weeks ago. Yandy Díaz said Saturday that his left shoulder feels "a lot better" after a recent cortisone injection. Díaz remains without a timetable to return to the Rays' lineup, but there's been no talk between him and the organization regarding a possible trip to the injured list. He's missed five consecutive games due to left shoulder soreness. It sounds like there's a chance he's back atop Tampa Bay's lineup sometime this upcoming week. Stay tuned.

  • MLB 2022 | Arozarena grabs three hits and swipes bag #32, Chapman struggles continue, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources. Sep 22, 2022 Randy Arozarena went 3-for-4 with two RBI and also stole a base on Thursday in the Rays' lopsided victory over the Blue Jays. Arozarena, who missed time earlier this week following an altercation with teammate Yandy Díaz, put the Rays ahead in the early stages of the contest with an RBI double off Blue Jays starter José Berríos in the opening frame. He also added an RBI single in the ensuing frame and picked up his 32nd stolen base of the season in the ensuing frame. Arozarena has also recorded three multi-hit games in his last five contests, with three RBI and three runs scored over that span. The 27-year-old outfielder, who has also delivered 19 homers this season, finds himself just four steals behind Marlins speedster Jon Berti for the major league lead in the stolen base department. Luis Robert (hand, wrist) was held out of the White Sox starting lineup once again on Thursday. It's the second straight game that Robert has missed due to the nagging soreness in his left hand/wrist. It certainly sounds like he'll be day-to-day for the remainder of the regular season. AJ Pollock started in his place in center field on Thursday and batted seventh against Shane Bieber and the Guardians. Yandy Díaz (shoulder) remained out of the Rays' starting lineup on Thursday versus the Blue Jays. Díaz has been sidelined for most of this week because of soreness in his left shoulder. He reportedly got into an off-field altercation with teammate Randy Arozarena on Monday night, but all parties involved claim that it did not become physical. Díaz, 31, is sitting on a .292/.399/.419 season slash line. Astros' Aledmis Díaz and Yordan Álvarez: Hitless on Thursday. Díaz and Álvarez were 0-for-7 combined on Thursday' 2-0 loss to Baltimore at Camden Yards. Díaz struck out twice while Álvarez was 0-for-3 leaving his BA at exactly .300 for this year. It has been a phenomenal season for Álvarez who is slashing .300/.402/.618 with 94 RBI, 131 hits, and 63 extra-bases that includes 24 doubles, two triples, and 37 HR. Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Struggles in outing. Chapman struggled in his job as a reliever this Thursday after only being able to get one out in a 5-4 win against the Red Sox. Chapman threw 16 pitches - only 6 of them for strikes - walking two and striking out one. The Cuban has had one of his worst seasons, with a 4.36 ERA and losing his closer role. Yuli Gurriel was absent from the Astros starting lineup for Thursday's matchup against the Orioles. It looks to be just a breather for the 38-year-old first baseman. Trey Mancini started in his place at first base while Yainer Diaz functioned as the club's designated hitter and batted eighth against Kyle Bradish and the O's on Thursday night in Baltimore. Oakland's Norge L. Ruíz: Allowed a run in outing. Norge L. Ruíz threw 1 1/3 innings on Thursday's 9-5 loss to the Mariners. The righthander threw 17 pitches - 12 of them for strikes - allowing one earned run with a single. He had no walk or strikeout in the game and saw his ERA climbing to 6.46 on his MLB season debut. White Sox' Yoán Moncada, José Abreu, and Yasmani Grandal: One hit each on Thursday's loss. Moncada, Abreu, and Grandal all went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in a 4-2 loss to the Guardians on Thursday's night. Abreu, the most veteran of the group, is sitting on another great season slashing .308/.381/.450 with 15 HR, and 72 RBI. For Abreu it could be his fourth season over the .300 mark, since his debut back in 2014 when he won the ROY award with 36 HR, 131 RBI, and slash line of .317/.383/.581. Padres' Adrián Morejón: Fifth hold of the year. Morejón record four outs in an appearance against the Cardinals on Thursday, allowing two earned runs on on hit and one walk. He didn't struck out a hitter and was still able to get a hold in a 5-4 loss. Morejón's ERA for the year is now 4.60. Reds' José Barrero: Remained out of lineup. Barrero didn't start Thursday against the Brewers. Barrero is on the bench for a second consecutive matchup after going 2-for-12 with a run and five strikeouts over his last three games. Kyle Farmer will start at shortstop and bat third.
