  • Pitcher Erly Casanova seeks milestone in his Cuban baseball career

He would become the 81st pitcher to reach 100 wins in the National Series. In today's game between Industriales and Artemisa, pitcher Erly Casanova is seeking his 100th victory in the Cuban baseball championships. A native of Pinar del Rio, Casanova is the son of one of the greatest players of this sport on the island, Luis Giraldo Casanova. He has been called to reinforce the Artemisa squad of the Elite Cuban Baseball League. According to the official statistics of the championship, he has recorded two wins and one loss without allowing earned runs in 20 innings pitched. The reason he doesn't lead the tournament in ERA is because he hasn't accumulated the minimum of 26 games played. Furthermore, he displays a Whip of 0.85 and his opponents hit him just .176, which confirms his status as one of the best pitchers in the league. Against Industriales, Casanova could become the 81st pitcher to reach the 100-win plateau, a list headed by Pedro Luis Lazo, also from Pinar del Rio (257). A bit of an emotional bonus will help Cazadores win again, as the Havana Lions have fallen into decline in the tournament with five consecutive losses, the last one yesterday by the Mercy Rule with just one hit in the game. Geonel Gutiérrez allowed one hit to Jorge Enrique Alomá in the eighth inning before the 10-0 score was recorded. He dominated Industriales in the last Cuban National Series, completing the second perfect game in Cuban baseball championships, by a score of 16-0, also via the Mercy Rule in five innings. During yesterday's games, in the most expected result of the tournament, Las Tunas beat Matanzas 8-7 and cut their winning streak to nine. In the ninth inning, Osvaldo Abreu drove in the winning run with a double. Rodolfo Díaz pitched - 3.0 IP, 1H, 2K, 1BB - three scoreless innings to get the win. Also yesterday Santiago de Cuba tied the series against Sancti Spíritus beating them 6-1. Wilber Reina (6.0 IP, 5H, 5K, 2BB) gave Santiago its first successful start of the tournament.Osvaldo Acuña threw the last three innings and was credited with the save. Artemisa and Industriales play a doubleheader on Saturday to make up for Thursday's game postponed due to transportation issues. Matanzas-Las Tunas and Santiago de Cuba-Sancti Spíritus will play a single game. Matanzas leads the standings (16-10), followed by Sancti Spíritus (14-12), Artemisa (13-12), Las Tunas (13-13), Industriales (12-13) and Santiago de Cuba (9- 17).

  • A Cuban baseball game was confiscated for violating league rules

For violating the regulations, Santiago de Cuba's victory over Artemisa was confiscated Santiago de Cuba's last game against Artemisa in the Elite League of Cuban baseball has been confiscated, according to the Cuban National Baseball Commission. After the Wasps defeated the Artemisa Hunters 11-9 in Wednesday's early hours, the Hunters filed a protest for an inappropriate pitcher. For the number of pitches he threw in his last outing, the pitcher was unable to work for the day. In their announcement following the game, the tournament organizers said they would review the corresponding reports and announce their decision. According to the Commission, Yoendris Montero was not authorized to work at the game. This is because last Saturday he threw 27 pitches and on Sunday 23, requiring him to take two days off. According to section J of article 5.1.1 of the tournament regulations, "when a pitcher throws in consecutive games, the rest will depend on the number of pitches he made on the consecutive days he worked." Due to the Santiago team's infraction, in addition to confiscating the game, it was decided to suspend pitching coach Fernand Blanc for three games. In these cases, the final score of the game is nine (9) runs to zero for the opposing team. Based on the adjusted standings, Matanzas is the leader with 15-9, followed by Sancti Spiritus (13-11), Artemisa, Industriales, and Las Tunas (12-12), and Santiago de Cuba (8-16).

Meanwhile the Rangers skipper, Bruce Bochy, became the sixth manager in World Series history to win four championships, joining Casey Stengel (seven), Joe McCarthy (seven), Connie Mack (five), Walter Alston (four), and Joe Torre (four). In Group B, where complex rivals like Curacao, Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Colombia are waiting, it was a match of pure formality. The Cubans will face Curacao in the second game of the tournament this Sunday starting at 3:05 pm, local time.

  • PanAm-U23'2023 | Cuba defeats Curacao in its second appearance by a score of 5-1

In the Cuban victory, Miguel A. Neira and Carlos Monier played a crucial role Excellent pitching by the young left-hander Miguel A. Neira and a sacrifice fly by Carlos Monier was key to Cuba's second victory in the Pan-American U23 baseball tournament, which is played in the cities of Masaya and Managua in Nicaragua, in which Cuba beat Curacao 5-1 Sunday evening at the National Soberano stadium. Box score It was Cuba's second win in Group B, after a 13-0 knockout victory over Costa Rica on Saturday. Miguel A. Neira, Cuba's starter, pitched an outstanding game, 82 pitches, 52 strikes. He left Curacao with a solo single and one run in six innings. He finished with seven strikeouts and no walks, adding to his masterpiece against the Caribbean Team. Ethan de Cuba singled, stole second, moved to third base on another stolen base, and a wild pitch scored the only run the Cuban left-hander allowed. For the Cuban victory, Neira retired the next 16 batters with 5 strikeouts after hitting Darwin Gregg with a pitch in the first inning. In the bottom of that first inning, Cuba tied the game against left-handed starter Je-andrick Lourens. Following a walk, Christian L. Rodríguez moved to third on Darián Palma's single, and Guille García grounded a ball to second base, allowing him to score. The one that would have led to the victory came two innings later against starter Lourens. Due to an error by the second baseman, Palma reached first base and moved to second on Guille García's walk. After Palma reached third base via a fielder's choice, Carlos Monier struck a timely sacrifice fly to center field that drove him in. The Cubans rallied for three runs in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Guille hit a sacrifice fly that brought one run. A throwing error by the shortstop led to two additional runs. Randy Cueto sealed the Cuban victory in the seventh with a perfect inning in which he struck out two and needed only 12 pitches, 8 of which were strikes. With the win Cuba became one of three undefeated teams in Group B, along with Colombia and Venezuela. The Colombians beat Costa Rica quickly this Sunday after a close 2-1 victory over Panamá on Saturday. Despite this, only one undefeated team between them will remain in the group on Monday, when Colombians and Cubans meet at 6:05 pm. (Photos: Norland Rosendo/Juventud Rebelde)

  • PanAm-U23’2023 | Colombia stopped Cuba with a 7-4 victory

Colombia and Venezuela are now the only undefeated teams in Group B of the tournament In a duel between undefeated teams in Group B of the pre-world tournament, which runs until September 30 in Masaya and Managua, Nicaragua, Colombia defeated Cuba 7-4. Box score Against the island's bullpen, the Colombians came back in the fifth inning. The Cuban relievers couldn't maintain the 3-2 advantage they had acquired by the middle of the game. Cuba scored early, with three runs in the first inning, but Colombia scored two in the second inning and didn't score more until the fifth. In that inning, the Cuban starter, José I. Grandales, was pulled from the game after leaving two runners on with no outs. But relievers Rafael Perdomo, Alex Guerra, and Orisbel Borges allowed RBI singles, to allow Colombia to take the first lead of the game. After 4 innings of work in which he struck out four and walked two, the Cuban starter was charged with four earned runs. Andrew Salcedo's two-run homer in the sixth inning gave Colombia a 7-3 lead, with the Cubans loading the bases in the seventh inning, but only scoring one run. Colombia's manager, Neder Horta, praised his players for their behavior on the field and acknowledged the team's excellent baseball. "It was important for us to stop Cuba, which is a great rival, and then make the necessary run to get the win", explained the manager. The Colombians continued their undefeated streak thanks to reliever Nicolás Maldonado (2.1 IP, 1H, 3K, 3BB) who collected the win. The Cuban starter took the loss. Now, Cuba faces another tough test when it faces Venezuela on Tuesday, a team that with a victory could secure its ticket to the 2024 World Cup. The results of Monday's day show Venezuela and Colombia to be the leading teams in Group B with a 3-0 record, followed by Cuba (2-1), Panama (1-2) and Curaçao and Costa Rica (both 0 -3 In the other bracket, Nicaragua leads (3-0), followed by Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico (all with 1-1), and Argentina (3-0).

  • PanAm-U23'2023 | Cuba's 10-5 win over Venezuela fuels World Cup hopes

With six runs in the eighth inning, the Cubans won by the tie-break rule Cuba's U23 baseball team made a significant step in its chances of making the 2024 World Cup in China in a game that truly left the greatest emotions at the end. This Tuesday, Cuba defeated Venezuela 10-5 in Managua, Nicaragua, using the Tie-break rule. Box score The game would be defined by Cuba scoring six runs during an interminable eight-inning for Venezuela's pitchers. A two-run homer by Cuba's Guillermo García knocked down Venezuela just one out from a World Cup ticket, when right-handed reliever Jhan Zambrano gave up a 3-2 lead to Cuba in the seventh inning. However, in the bottom of the seventh, Victor Arias hit a solo home run against closer Randy Cueto with two outs. This tied the game at 4-4 and forced extra innings. Cuba, with a 3-1 record in the pre-World Cup tournament, now stands in second place in Group B, while Venezuela, with the same record, will try to keep its World Cup hopes alive this Wednesday. For the moment, Colombia is the only undefeated team in the group. At night, the Colombians will play Curacao. Against Cuban starter Albert Valladares, Venezuela scored first with a walk to Victor Arias and a double to left center by David García. While Valladares allowed the run, he pitched a duel with Venezuelan right-handed starter Brayan Zalaya in the first three innings to keep the score the same. Cuba took control of the game in the fourth inning.A hit by Andrys Pérez and consecutive walks by Alejandro J. Escobar and Carlos Monier put Zalaya in big trouble. Fermín Acosta replaced him and got two outs quickly, retiring Euclides Pérez via double play, but not without avoiding the 1-1 tie when Pérez scored from third. Minutes later, Cuba took the lead with Jean Baldoquin's RBI single that drove in Escobar. Nonetheless, Venezuela regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. A walk to Víctor Arias and a triple by Antoni Flores produced the tie and sent Valladares back to the dugout. Wilfred Astudillo's single to left off reliever Alex Guerra gave Venezuela a 3-2 lead. Besides García's homer, another key piece in Cuban's win was right-hander reliever Rafael Perdomo. His 2 2/3 scoreless innings limited Venezuela's offensive to three hits while striking out one and walking none. The Cuban bats were given a chance to comeback thanks to his work. The winning pitcher, Randy Cueto, who surrendered the tying homer in the seventh inning, was hit hard during his outing. He allowed another run in the eighth inning but closed the game. Wilker Palma was charged with the loss. On Wednesday at 7:05 pm, Cuba will take on Panama, while at 12:05 pm Venezuela will take on Colombia. If Venezuela loses and Cuba wins, the island will qualify for the 2024 World Cup.

  • PanAm-U23'2023 | With a 15-11 victory, Panama ended Cuba's World Cup dreams

The Cuban pitching couldn't hold off the 13 hits fired by the Panamanian hitters On Wednesday night, the Cuban national team's World Cup dream ended as Panama massacred the Cuban pitching. The Panama team beat the island team 15-11, during a decisive game at Roberto Clemente Stadium in Masaya, Nicaragua. Box score The defeat generated a triple tie in Group B between Panama, Venezuela, and Cuba, all with a 3-2 balance, but Venezuela obtained the World Cup ticket based on Team's Quality Balance (TBQ) applied to international events of the World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC). Cuba started well in a match that could have earned them a spot in the 2024 U23 World Championship, scoring four runs against starter James González. The Panamanians responded quickly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to knock out the island's starter, left-handed Dorvis Borroto. Left-handed Miguel Neira, the Cuban starter designated for the game, suddenly disappeared today from the hotel where the Cuban team was staying. Borroto was then called to pitch in this critical game. It was perhaps Borroto's hasty removal that led to a lethal attack by the Panamanian offense against the Cuban relief pitchers. Five runs were scored in the second and fourth innings, along with three in the third inning. An Erasmo Caballero Grand Slam against Cuba's first reliever, Albert Valladares, turned the score around and put Panama ahead 7-5 in the second inning. The Panamanians never trailed again. Two of Panama's three runs in the third inning were driven in by Julio González's two-run home run off Cuba's third reliever, right-hander Reynaldo Alvarez. Despite Panama's 15-6 lead, Cuba's offense battled and scored five runs in the fifth inning. This was supported by three hits, command issues by Panama relievers, and a defensive error. But that was all the Cubans could do in the game. After scoring 11 runs on 11 hits, the team was abandoned by a pitching staff that saw seven relievers in the game, five of whom gave up runs. The result was a setback for Cuba in a pre-World Cup event of the category. The team took second place in the 2022 event held in Aguascalientes, Mexico. In that tournament the island's team advanced to the final and lost 4-0 to Mexico. Having beaten Venezuela 3-1 in the afternoon match, Colombia was the only undefeated team in Group B with a balance of 5-0 and thus clinched a spot in the final - where it will face Nicaragua (4-0) - as well as the ticket to the 2024 World Championship in China. Puerto Rico defeated the Dominican Republic 13-7 on the same day in Group A, securing the other ticket in dispute for China 2024, along with Nicaragua.

  • World Series 2023 | The Rangers beat the Diamondbacks in a rout 11-7, putting themselves 3-1 up

Cuban MLB Players News for the 2023 postseason. A compendium from several sources Oct 31 Rangers 11, D-backs 7 Rangers lead 3-1 In Game 4 of the World Series, the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-7.As the Rangers lead the best-of-seven series 3-1, they are one win away from securing the franchise's first championship. Throughout the night, the Rangers led comfortably with five runs in both the second and third innings. This was the first time in World Series history that a team scored consecutive five-run innings. A two-run triple by Marcus Semien and a three-run homer by Corey Seager powered Texas to a 10-run lead by the third inning. A commanding lead that they would not relinquish. A shot by Jonah Heim completed the scoring in the eighth inning. Both teams used their bullpens. However, Arizona did not fare well with this. Despite being injured, Adolis García still motivated the team during the pregame ceremony. The words he spoke seemed to have an effect, as Texas led 10-0 after two and a half innings. With the win, Texas improved to 10-0 on the road this postseason and moved within one win of winning its first title in its 63-season history. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had a great night for Arizona. In the fourth, he hit a sacrifice fly, and in the eighth, he hit a three-run homer. There was a sacrifice fly by Tommy Pham in the eighth, and a two-run single by Gabriel Moreno in the ninth. In addition, Ketel Marte had two hits, extending his record postseason hitting streak to 20 games. When taking a 3-1 advantage in best-of-seven series, MLB teams have historically won about 85% of the series. Game 5 of the World Series is at 8:03 p.m. ET Wednesday. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBI as the Diamondbacks fell to the Rangers in Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday night. Gurriel got the Diamondbacks on the board with an sacrifice fly of Andrew Heaney in the fourth inning, but all that did was pull the Diamondbacks to within nine runs at 10-1. He then slugged a 382-foot (101.8 mph EV) three-run shot off of Chris Stratton in the eighth inning that made it an 11-5 ballgame. For the postseason, the 30-year-old outfielder is hitting .274 (17-for-62) with three homers, 11 RBI and a pair of stolen bases. The Rangers have replaced Adolis García (side) on their World Series roster with Ezequiel Duran. The Rangers were hopeful that García’s oblique issue wasn’t going to keep him out for long, but after going through a workout and attempting to give it a go on Tuesday, the decision was made to shut him down for the remainder of the season. It’s a major blow to the Rangers’ lineup, as García has been the top run producer in all of baseball during the postseason.
