Series tied 1-1

On Saturday, the Arizona Diamondbacks evened the series 1-1 with a 9-1 win over the Texas Rangers.

Right-hander Merrill Kelly pitched seven innings of excellent baseball and the offense did the rest against Jordan Montgomery and the Rangers' bullpen.

As a result, Kelly held the Texas Rangers to a postseason-low one run on three hits, while the D-Backs lineup managed 16 hits in total.

During Kelly's seven innings, Texas was limited to one solo home run. His nine strikeouts tie him with Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling for the most in a World Series game for a D-back.

With four hits, Tommy Pham led the offense, but eight different D-backs scored runs and six different D-backs drove in runs. Teamwork was key.

The first run came from Gabriel Moreno's one-out, solo home run in the fourth. Following Tommy Pham's double, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. singled to make it 2-0 against Montgomery, who lost.

Rangers' deficit was cut in half by Mitch Garver's solo homer in the fifth.

In six-plus innings, Jordan Montgomery allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk. Following a double by Alek Thomas and a single by Evan Longoria, he was replaced. In replacing Montgomery, Andrew Heaney gave up a sacrifice bunt, a groundout to third, and a Corbin Carroll opposite-field RBI single to increase Arizona's lead to 4-1.

Arizona never looked back, scoring three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth.

With his eighth-inning single, Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte had an 18-game hit streak in the postseason, an MLB record.

There will be no games on Sunday. Max Scherzer (0-1, 9.45) will face Brandon Pfaadt (0-0, 2.70) in Game 3 on Monday.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. extends his hitting streak.

With a 2-for-3 performance in Game 2 of the 2023 World Series, Gurriel Jr. extended his hitting streak to seven games in a row. Gurriel Jr. also recorded his first RBI and first run in the Fall Classic. Throughout the postseason in 2023, Gurriel hits .268/.293/.429 with 2 home runs, four runs scored, and 7 RBIs.

Adolis García went hitless in Game 2.

This Saturday, Adolis García, the hero of Game 1 of the series, had no hits in Texas' 9-1 loss to Arizona. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and a walk. In the postseason of 2023, the Cuban right fielder had a slash line of .339/.391/.763 with 8 homers and 22 RBIs.
