In Game 1 of the NL Championship Series on Sunday night, Jack Flaherty teamed up with Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen to pitch a three-hitter, while also helping them equal the postseason record of 33 consecutive scoreless innings in a dominant 9-0 victory over the New York Mets.
The Dodgers removed Mets' starter Kodai Senga in the second inning, built a six-run lead by the fourth, and matched the shutout record set by Baltimore Orioles pitchers in the initial four games of the 1966 World Series against the Dodgers.
Flaherty pitched seven innings, allowing only two hits in the Dodgers' first postseason game without allowing any runs for seven or more innings since Clayton Kershaw's eight-inning performance in the 2020 NL Wild Card Series. The 28-year-old right-hander received a standing ovation from the packed crowd of 53,503 as he left the game. Flaherty, who returned home from Detroit at the trade deadline on July 30, has been a reliable presence in a rotation that has been plagued by injuries.
Shohei Ohtani, the top candidate for the National League MVP award, went 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring two runs and bringing in another. Meanwhile, Andy Pagés, the Cuban outfielder for the Dodgers, came into the game towards the end but did not have any at-bats. With the Mets recording just three hits in the game, José Iglesias contributed to one of them by going 1-for-2 with a walk.
Game 2 is today at 4:08 pm (ET).
