MLB 2023 | Colás slugs first career homer, Luis Robert goes deep twice, Cionel nabs win for Orioles

Major League Baseball (MLB) and other Cuban Players News for the 2023 season. A compendium from several sources

April 7

Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Nabs win Friday. Pérez (1-0) allowed a run on three hits and struck out one over one inning to earn the win Friday over the Yankees. Pérez has had some mixed results through 4.1 innings across four appearances this season. He's struck out five without walking a batter, but he's been tagged for two runs and seven hits. Pérez has worked in a high-leverage role as expected, though he's unlikely to challenge Felix Bautista for the majority of the Orioles' save chances.

José Barrero went 1-for-4 with an RBI on Friday in his return to the Reds' lineup.

He was also caught stealing in this one. Barrero sat out only one game after being lifted from Monday's contest against the Cubs with right hamstring tightness. It doesn't sound like he's going to wind up missing any additional time.

Oscar Colás hit his first big league homer Friday in the White Sox' loss to the Pirates.

Colás went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Friday against the Pirates. The solo shot came with the White Sox down 13-8 in the ninth, so it wasn't quite the moment Colás was likely hoping for with his first MLB homer. Still, he's on the board in just his eighth game, which is pretty good. He drew a start against a left-hander for the first time today, as the White Sox reiterated yesterday that he won't be a true platoon player. The homer, though, came off right-handed reliever Wil Crowe.

White Sox's Yoán Moncada: One hit in return. Moncada went 1-for-5 with a run scored Friday against the Pirates. Moncada returned from a one-game absence due to a sore foot and continued his strong start to the season. He has at least one hit in every contest that he's played and collected multiple knocks in three of seven matchups. Overall, he has 12 hits across 31 plate appearances, though he has struck out at a 32.3 percent clip.

Miguel Vargas went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks on Friday in his return to the Dodgers' lineup.

Vargas has walked an astounding 11 times in just six games this season. The 23-year-old second baseman wound up missing a pair of games earlier this week due to minor thumb and groin issues, but was back in there for Friday's showdown in Arizona.

White Sox's Luis Robert: Goes deep twice.

Robert went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI in Friday's loss to Pittsburgh. The star outfielder took Rich Hill deep twice Friday, including a 413-foot shot in the third inning. Robert is up to four long balls this season with a 1.111 OPS through 37 plate appearances. All of his home runs have come during the last five games, during which he's also notched three multi-hit performances.
