Astros' Yulieski Gurriel: Two infield hits. Yordan Álvarez: hitless.
Gurriel, involved in a difficult season, went 2-for-4 on Thursday's 6-3 win against the Twins. Gurriel had two infield singles lifting his BA to .248 this year. The veteran first baseman has been hitting the ball better lately, and in his last 15 games is slashing .305/.348/.356 with 5 walks and 7 RBI. In the same game, Yordan Álvarez went 0-for-4 and his BA descended to .294. Álvarez is slashing .294/.398/.601 with 31 HR and 79 RBI this year.
Rockies' José Iglesias: Another multi-hit game.
Iglesias collected his 31st multi-hit game of the season, after going 2-for-4 with a strikeout in a 3-1 loss to the Mets on Thursday night. Iglesias' batting average is now .310, and he is ranked sixth along with José Abreu in all MLB.
José Barrero had another rough night at the dish in Thursday's loss to the Phillies, going 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts.
To say that the 24-year-old has been overwhelmed at the plate through his first 20 games on the season would be an understatement. He's now slashing an anemic .171/.194/.271 with two homers, seven RBI and a miserable 36/2 K/BB ratio in 72 plate appearances.
Yoán Moncada was removed from Thursday's game against the Orioles due to left hamstring tightness.
The White Sox believe that the issue is minor and he's listed as day-to-day. While he's only played in 80 games this season, health hasn't even been his biggest issue -- his on-field performance has been atrocious. He's slashing a putrid .197/.269/.313 with seven homers and 40 RBI.
Yankees placed LHP Néstor Cortés on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to August 22, with a left groin strain.
The 27-year-old All-Star was expected to start against the Athletics over the weekend, instead he'll sit down for a couple of weeks due to a nagging groin issue. Cortés has been phenomenal through 23 starts on the season, registering a 2.68 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 133/30 K/BB ratio across 131 innings. Clarke Schmidt seems like the most likely candidate to start in his place against the Athletics.
Ray's Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena: Hitless on Thursday.
Díaz and Arozarena went 0-for-6 combined on Thursday's 8-3 victory against the Angels. Díaz walked twice and scored two runs while Arozarena struck out and also scored a run.
A's Norge L. Ruíz: Three runs allowed in his third season outing.
Norge L. Ruíz made his MLB debut last August 19 after five MILB years, but he has not taken advantage of the opportunity received, being punished in almost all his outings. In his third outing, Thursday night against the Yankees, Ruíz pitched 2 1/3 allowing three earned runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts. The right-hander has allowed 14 hits and 5 earned runs in 6 innings with 9 strikeouts and a walk this year. Ruíz is lucky that he's pitching for a non-competitive team like Oakland but his return to the minors is expected if he continues his terrible work.
Yasmani Grandal (knee) will begin a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
The 33-year-old backstop has been sidelined since August 20 when he had to be carted off the field after an awkward slide at home plate. It's terrific news that he has already progressed to the point of a rehab assignment and should be able to rejoin the White Sox before the end of next week barring any setbacks.
Jay's Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: One hit against the Red Sox.
Gurriel Jr. was 1-for-6 against the Red Sox in a 6-5 victory in 10 innings Thursday. With his performance Gurriel is now batting .295. The young outfielder is having a rough 15 games, slashing .203/.239/.266 during that period with no homers, 6 RBI, and 8 strikeouts.
