MLB 2022 | Yordan delivers in the 10th, Yuli is heating up, Abreu homers, and more

Daily Major League Baseball (MLB) Cuban Players News for the 2022 season. A compendium from several MLB sources.

Yordan Álvarez delivered a game-winning single in the 10th as the Astros edged the Mariners 3-2 on Sunday.

Considering the differences in defensive value and playing time, there's no arguing for Alvarez over Aaron Judge as the AL MVP through four months. Still, Álvarez is leading the majors with a .417 OBP and he's right there with Judge in slugging percentage (.670 to .671 for Judge). He's an incredible force right now.

White Sox's Yoán Moncada: Took Sunday off. Moncada was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. Moncada is sitting for the first time since the All-Star break after going 4-for-29 with three doubles, three runs and four RBI in the White Sox's first eight games of the second half. Leury García took over the position third base.

Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Adds another steal. Gurriel went 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Mariners. Gurriel has two steals, three doubles and three multi-hit efforts during his five-game hitting streak. His theft Sunday came as part of a double-steal that saw Jose Altuve dart home for the game's first run. Gurriel has picked up four of his seven steals this season in his last 10 games. He's slashing .243/.293/.392 with seven home runs, 28 RBI, 36 runs scored and 30 doubles through 94 contests.

José Abreu went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Athletics.

Abreu hit a 107.9-mph, 399-foot solo home run off of Adam Oller to leadoff the bottom of the second. And after sending a 108.1-mph single to center field in the bottom of the sixth, he was called out on a double play. He's now batting .302 with 12 home runs in 378 at-bats.

Astros' Aledmys Díaz: Benched Sunday. Díaz was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reported. According to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle, manager Dusty Baker said Díaz was initially penciled in to start Sunday, but the Astros opted to withhold the 31-year-old from the lineup to give him a chance to rest his legs.

Ray's Yandi Díaz and Randy Arozarena: One hit combined on Sunday.

Díaz and Arozarena went 1-for-8 combined in a 5-3 loss to the Guardians on Sunday afternoon. Díaz went 0-for-5 leaving three runners on bases while Arozarena also walked.

Jay's Lourdes Gurriel Jr.: One hit on Sunday.

Gurriel went 1-for-4 in a 4-1 victory against the Tigers on Sunday afternoon. It was Gurriel's 34th hit during the month on July, an incredible month where the Cuban outfielder slashed .382/.433/.472 with a homer and 9 RBI. Without much power Gurriel is one of the best contact outfielders in MLB right now having a tremendous season with the Jays with 104 hits, 42 RBI and a BA of .310.

White Sox's Oscar Colás: Cleared to play Sunday.

Colés (neck) started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Sunday in Double-A Birmingham's 8-5 loss to Tennessee on Sunday.

Orioles's Cionel Pérez: One out on Sunday.

On his outing number 42 of the season, Cionel Pérez wasn't really sharp Sunday in a 3-2 loss to the Reds. On relief of Bryan Baker in the sixth inning, Pérez allowed an RBI single of Joey Votto and followed with a walk that load the bases, before retiring Kyle Farmer in a sacrifice fly that allowed a runner to score to give the Reds a 2-0 lead. Pérez was pulled after Farmer sacrifice fly and overall, while he didn't allow any earned run, he also was not able to avoid two runners to score. His ERA for the season is now 1.25.

White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Rested Sunday. Grandal was out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. Grandal went 4-for-16 with two RBI while starting each of the White Sox's past four games as either a designated hitter or catcher. José Abreu handled DH duties in the series finale with Oakland, while Seby Zavala got the nod behind the plate.

Braves' Guillermo Heredia: Seeing scarce playing time. Heredia remained on the bench for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. Heredia has picked up only three starts since June 2, and his playing-time outlook doesn't look to have improved even after Adam Duvall suffered a season-ending wrist injury. So long as all of Ronald Acuña, Eddie Rosario, Marcell Ozuna, Michael Harris and William Contreras are healthy, Heredia doesn't look like he'll have a path for even short-side platoon work out of the Atlanta outfield.
