MLB 2022 | Chapman earns win, Cortés no-decision, Cionel with another scoreless inning, and more

Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Earns win in relief. Chapman (3-3) earned the win with a scoreless inning Tuesday against the Pirates. He struck out one and did not walk a batter. In his second appearance since being reinstated from the injured list, Chapman pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn his third win of the season. The outing likely was intended to just get the veteran some work, but the Yankees pulled off a remarkable comeback capped off by a walkoff grand slam by Giancarlo Stanton to secure Chapman's win. With Clay Holmes looking shakier of late, Chapman may well find himself back in the closer role if he strings together a couple more scoreless outings.

Néstor Cortés allowed one run over five innings Tuesday in a no-decision versus the Pirates as the Yankees came back to win 9-8.

Cortés wasn't very overly sharp, walking a couple batters and needing 87 pitches to cover his five frames. The lone run he surrendered came home on a sac fly in the fourth inning, but it could have been much worse as it was just a couple feet shy of being a grand slam. All told, it's a nice outing considering the lefty didn't have his best stuff. He'll face the Red Sox at home on Sunday.

Orioles' Cionel Pérez: Another scoreless inning.

Cionel Pérez threw another scoreless inning, his #13 consecutive since August 17, in a 3-2 loss to the Tigers on Tuesday. Pérez used only 10 pitches - 7 of them for strikes - with a strikeout. The young lefty has been exceptional this year, compiling a 7-1 record with one save, an 1.36 ERA, 49 strikeouts in 53 innings, and a total of 25 holds.

Lourdes Gurriel (hamstring) remains a bit behind in his running progression.

Gurriel (hamstring) could return to action Thursday, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports. Gurriel is not with Toronto for its ongoing series against the Phillies, but he is planning to join his team Thursday and could be activated from the injured list the same day.

Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Action in one of the doubleheader games.

Vargas saw action in one of the doubleheader games the Dodgers had against Arizona on Tuesday. In a 6-5 win against the D-backs, Vargas went 2-for-5 with his 3rd RBI of the season and a run. Vargas played left field and in his MLB season debut has a slash line of .172/.200/.207 in just 9 games and 29 AB with the Dodgers.

Randy Arozarena and Yandy Díaz, absent from the Rays' starting lineup on Tuesday against the Astros.

Arozarena was back in the Rays' starting lineup on Monday after dealing with a non-COVID illness over the weekend. It's unclear whether he's still feeling a bit under the weather. There should be an update on his status at some point soon. Yandy Díaz also took a seat on Tuesday evening.

Yordan Álvarez was not in the Astros' starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rays.

Álvarez has dealt with lingering hand issues throughout the 2022 campaign, but this appears to be a routine maintenance day after the Astros clinched their fifth AL West title in the last six years on Monday night. The 25-year-old fantasy superstar is hitting .304/.406/.626 with 91 runs scored, a career-high 37 home runs, 94 RBI and one stolen base across 515 plate appearances this season.

White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Out of Tuesday's lineup. Grandal was not in Tuesday's lineup against the Guardians, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reported. Grandal is hitting .205 with two home runs in 13 games this month. Seby Zavala started behind the dish.

Rockies' Jose Iglesias: Getting closer to return. Iglesias (thumb) is feeling better and getting closer to making a return, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reported. Manager Bud Black still has yet to announce a timetable for Iglesias, but the news of progress is still good for a Rockies team that has been plagued with injuries to its best players late in the season. Alan Trejo continues to mash in his absence, slashing .308/.372/.538 with seven RBI since arriving to Colorado earlier this month.
