2017 Postseason: Granma Upsets Matanzas in Semi-Final Playoffs

During the regular season Matanzas broke a record for most wins. At the beginning of the season they looked unbeatable, but chinks in the armor were beginning to show during the playoff round. The Granma Stallions advanced to the finals taking the last two games of the seven game series to eliminate the Crocodiles from the championship round, slaying the giant of the regular season. It is not the first time Matanzas has won the regular season with the best record but lost in a playoff series.

56 NS: Cuban Series Winding Down; Matanzas Breaks Cuban Win Record

The Cuban League is now down to the last four teams for the playoffs. Matanzas, Ciego de Avila, Villa Clara and Granma appear to be the final four teams with Holquin and Camaguey being eliminated. The four teams will then play it off to see who represents Cuba in the Series del Caribe, though the winning team can add players to their roster to enhance their lineup or rotation. If Granma does not make it to the finals expect Alfredo Despaigne to represent the winning Cuban team in the Series del Caribe.

With the defection of a number of Cuban players to the major leagues an opportunity opens up for young Cuban players to earn a spot in the starting lineup or in the rotation. Below are some players in Cuba 24 years of age or younger who are excelling in the Nacional Series.

Myworld does not know a lot about these players but their numbers seem to show the ability to play this game. Camaguey seems to have the top talent when it comes to younger players.

Myworld has not followed the Cuban League and was shocked that they are already in their 40 plus games when we thought we would check in.

Cuban League

The popular national sport of baseball maintained and even tightened its hold on the island nation of Cuba in the aftermath of the 1959 socialist revolution. In fact the national game actually expanded in popularity and elevated in talent level during several decades immediately after Fidel Castro’s midcentury rise to power.
