2019 Pan-Am Games | Panas drives in five as Canada outlasts Cuba

Connor Panas (Etobicoke, ON) belted a three-run homer in the first inning and finished with five runs batted in as Canada's men's baseball team earned an 8-6 win over Cuba on day two of the Pan Am Games baseball competition.

The list from last year had a player traded to the American League (Yusniel Diaz) and three drop from the list. No player from the list from last year graduated to the major leagues. We expect that to change after this year with Yoan Lopez providing the Diamondbacks with good bullpen work.

Not a lot of graduation from the list compiled last year. Lourdes Gurriel graduated, but his minor league time is still not finished as he struggles with his defense. Myworld has always felt he is better suited for the outfield. The bottom three players fell from the list and one player from the National League moved to the American League leaving room for three new players.

MLB 2019 | Yanks acquire veteran 1B/DH Morales from A's

The Yankees acquired first baseman Kendrys Morales and cash from the Oakland A's on Tuesday for a player to be named or cash considerations, the club announced.

Morales, 35, hit .204 (22-for-108) with one double, one triple, one home run and seven RBIs in 34 games with the A's before he was designated for assignment Monday.

Most of the Japanese teams scout the major leagues to find their foreign players. Some teams like the Hiroshima Carp use their Dominican academy to try to find diamonds in the rough. Alfonso Soriano was one of those diamonds in the rough that first played for Hiroshima before he went to the major leagues. The Hawks work with the Cuban Baseball Federation to find their foreign players.

So much for Cuban players not having to defect to play in the majors.

When the Trump administration abruptly canceled Major League Baseball’s landmark agreement with the Cuban Baseball Federation, it guaranteed the dangerous practice will continue.

Players will continue to defect from Cuba.

And they will continue to put their lives at risk by hiring smugglers and human traffickers in order to leave the island.

Cuba announces first list of baseball players who can sign with U.S. teams

Cuba’s Baseball Federation announced on Tuesday a first list of players authorized to sign contracts directly with Major League Baseball organizations, moving Cuban-U.S. cooperation in the sport forward despite tense broader bilateral relations.

The list announced of 34 players between 17 and 25 years old who classify as international amateurs under MLB rules did not include any major stars. Some, however, have already played professionally abroad like Raidel Martinez who has played in Japan.

Baseball for the blind players and officials from Cuba, France, Germany and Italy — and the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) — recently organised meetings and training in Havana, where baseball for the blind was introduced by the Italian Association of Baseball for the Blind (AIBXC) a few year ago.
