MLB | Mets Expect Cespedes To Return For Second Half of the Season, MLB | Cuba
By Josh Finkelstein
Jeff Wilpon said on Mike Francesa’s show today that the team expects to see Yoenis Céspedes return from double-heel surgery in “realistically, the second half of the season.”
Céspedes, 33, underwent surgery on one of his heels in August and the other one in October that is expected to keep him out of the lineup well into next season, with no specific timetable. However, this gives us some insight into how long Mets fans will have to wait to see “La Potencia” playing left field.
The outfielder played in only 38 games for the team last season in which he hit .262/.325/.496 with nine home runs and 29 RBI. Céspedes came back from the disabled list in August for one game in which he hit a home run and went 2-for-4 against the Yankees just to go back on the DL a few days later.
During his rehab assignment, the Mets decided to experiment with the idea of letting Céspedes play first base, but have never actually tried it in a major league game. He will be entering the third year of a four-year, $110 million contract in 2019.
