2015 Postseason: Isla de la Juventud Pirates rout Matanzas Crocodiles, tie Semifinals at 1-1

The Pirates once again are alive, coming back to stun the Crocodiles, 4-2, and tying the Cuban Semifinals at one game apiece in front of a 17,500 crowd at Victoria de Girón Park.


Now both teams are going to Isla de la Juventud, after playing Game 2 Wednesday night with the Pirates having lefty Darién Núñez on regular rest.The Pirates, trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning, wound up tying the game, and scoring two more runs in the top of the tenth to win the game.

Let's see, they scored one run in the eight inning.

One run in the ninth inning.

Two runs in the eleventh.

They wound up with only 7 hits, all singles.

Their No. 6 hitter reached base only one time, but he was able to produce three decisive runs.

And their winning rally, after tying the game in the ninth, came in style in the eleventh.

And then, a two-run single by Rigoberto Gómez.

Four runs, 4-2 lead, and the rout was on, scoring runs in the eight, ninth, and eleventh innings.

It was that kind of game.

Both starters, Yoalkis Cruz for the Pirates and Jonder Martínez for the Crocodiles, lasted 7 2/3 innings.

Cruz pitched an excepcional game after allowing two runs in three innings, retiring 12 men in a row until the seventh inning, and strucking out 5.

Jonder was even better. The veteran  right hander limited the Pirates to only three hits and one unearned run, striking out 6 and walking 2.

But thanks to the brilliant relief performances once again by Danni Aguilera - perfect 2 1/3 innings with one strikeout -, and closer Héctor Mendoza - one inning, no hits and one SO -, the Pirates were able to achieve victory.

Danni Aguilera (1-0) earned the win and he is now 11-0 in the season, while reliever Yasmani Insúa (0-1) was charged with the loss.
