The relationship between the United States and Cuba became strained last week when the Trump administration banned U.S. cruise ships from sailing to the island nation and cracked down on other travel there. But the relationship between longtime baseball coach and executive Peter Caliendo of Hoffman Estates and Cuba has never been better.

The Yankees acquired first baseman Kendrys Morales and cash from the Oakland A's on Tuesday for a player to be named or cash considerations, the club announced.

Morales, 35, hit .204 (22-for-108) with one double, one triple, one home run and seven RBIs in 34 games with the A's before he was designated for assignment Monday.

Cuba wins the inaugural Baseball5 Americas Open, Venezuela second

After a rough start with a loss to host Colombia on the opening game on day 1, finally Cuba wins the inaugural Baseball5 Americas Open in a final with Venezuela.

Like the opening round, also the finals were played over a series of best to 3 games. Cuba passed 2-0 with a score 12-7 and 11-1

The final standings are completed by Colombia, who won over Puerto Rico in the third place final series 2-0, with Guatemala closing in fifth.

So much for Cuban players not having to defect to play in the majors.

When the Trump administration abruptly canceled Major League Baseball’s landmark agreement with the Cuban Baseball Federation, it guaranteed the dangerous practice will continue.

Players will continue to defect from Cuba.

And they will continue to put their lives at risk by hiring smugglers and human traffickers in order to leave the island.

Cuba announces first list of baseball players who can sign with U.S. teams

Cuba’s Baseball Federation announced on Tuesday a first list of players authorized to sign contracts directly with Major League Baseball organizations, moving Cuban-U.S. cooperation in the sport forward despite tense broader bilateral relations.

The list announced of 34 players between 17 and 25 years old who classify as international amateurs under MLB rules did not include any major stars. Some, however, have already played professionally abroad like Raidel Martinez who has played in Japan.
