Hall of Fame broadcaster Rafael 'Felo' Ramirez dies at 94

Hall of Fame radio broadcaster Rafael "Felo" Ramirez, the signature voice for millions of Spanish-speaking sports fans over three decades, died Monday at age 94, the Miami Marlins announced.

"The entire Marlins organization is deeply saddened by the loss of a great friend, Hall-of-Fame broadcaster and community icon, Felo Ramirez," the Marlins said in the statement. "Since our inaugural season, he brought home practically every magical moment in franchise history to generations of fans. A true broadcast legend ... his extensive contributions to our game will never be forgotten."

The season officially began on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET when the Granma Horses starter César García delivered the first pitch to the Villa Clara Leopards. The Leopards started one of their aces, RHP Alaín Sánchez, but needed extra innings to beat the defending champions, 2-0. It was the first extra innings game in Opening Day since the 2012-13 (52 NS) season.

MLB: White Sox give Yoan Moncada his turn

The White Sox are finally putting a dent in their suddenly vaunted farm system.

With the Todd Frazier trade opening up an everyday spot in the field, Yoan Moncada is coming to play every day.

“We're not bringing him here to sit,” Hahn said when he made the announcement Tuesday night. “We are bringing him here to continue the development that needs to take place in Chicago. He still has some work to do. He’s obviously still very young. But we feel that he’s ready for that next challenge that comes at the big league level.”

MLB: Astros Sign Cuban RHP Elian Rodriguez

The signing is now official. MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart tweets that Elián Rodriguez’s exact bonus is $1.9MM, so he’ll cost the team a total of $3.8MM when accounting for the 100 percent luxury tax they’ll pay.

On June 6 the Astros agreed to sign 20-year-old Cuban righty Elian Rodriguez for $2MM, Baseball America’s Ben Badler reports. The move will be subject to MLB’s rules regarding international bonus spending and will be part of the pool period that ends June 15. As such, the Astros will have to pay a 100% tax on the signing, bringing the total cost to $4MM.

MLB: Reds sign Cuban shortstop José Israel García

The Reds announced Saturday that they have signed highly touted Cuban shortstop Jose Israel Garcia to a Minor League contract.

The 19-year old is expected to get a signing bonus close to $5 million, according to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez. He will report to Cincinnati's Dominican Summer League affiliate.

The White Sox on Saturday announced the signing of international free agent Luis Robert, who will be introduced today at a 11:30 a.m. CT press conference at Guaranteed Rate Field. You can watch it live here on MLB.com and whitesox.com.

Robert, a 19-year-old from Cuba, is the No. 1 international free agent, according to MLBPipeline.com, and he will be yet another piece in the club's ongoing rebuilding effort.

Marines sign Cuban outfielder Santos

The Chiba Lotte Marines have agreed on a deal worth $200,000 with Cuban outfielder Roel Santos, the Pacific League club said Thursday.

The 29-year-old Santos, who throws and bats left-handed, is known for his speed and defensive skills, and served as the leadoff hitter for the Cuban national team at the World Baseball Classic in March.

He is scheduled to arrive in Japan as soon as he clears visa issues.

A 14-1 win in seven innings over Cuba on Wednesday at the Tokyo Dome left the Netherlands with a 2-1 record in Pool E. And with Japan's 8-3 win over Israel, the Netherlands will advance to next week's final round at Dodger Stadium.
