Cubs again get stellar pitching in 1-0 win

Starting pitching was expected to dominate this week at Calixto García Stadium by at least one team.

That team was the Holguín Cubs, whose rotation dominated the first two games of the series against the Lions, despite having a slow start of the season.

Carlos Santiesteban (1-1) became the latest Cubs starter to turn in a stellar performance, exiting to a standing ovation after pitching six innings and beating Frank Montieh (0-1) on Wednesday night in a 1-0 victory over the Industriales Lions.

Shortstop Yordan Manduley was one of the heroes of the game, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth against Montieh, scoring Yunior Paumier with the only run of the game.

Santiesteban, who entered the rotation last year, scattered six singles and allowed only two runners past first base. He didn’t walk any hitter and left the game after six scoreless innings.

Closer Yaisel Sierra (2) followed Santiesteban, and had his second consecutive stellar performance, pitching three scoreless innings and allowing one hit. Sierra struck out two and walked two, for his second save of the season.

Montieh allowed one run on three hits in six innings as the Lions were shut out for the first time this season.

GRANMA 3, S. SPIRITUS 1

José A. Peña (1-0) struck out 4 while working into the eigth inning, and visiting Granma hit a home run in a 3-1 win over Sancti Spíritus on Wednesday night at José A. Huelga Stadium.

Peña allowed one run on five hits, while Carlos Benítez hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning, giving the Stallions a decisive lead.

Veteran right hander Ciro S. Licea (4) threw a perfect ninth inning, earning his fourth save of the season.

Noelvis Hernández (0-2) took the loss after 5.2 innings work allowing three runs.

PINAR DEL RIO 4, ARTEMISA 5

Víctor Muñoz hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, Roberto Zulueta  - tripled - and Diosbel Arias – singled – in a decisive sixth inning, and Artemisa won its second straight, 5-4, over Pinar del Río on Wednesday morning at 26 de Julio Stadium in Artemisa.

Israel Sánchez (1-0) allowed one hit with two strikeouts over 3.1 innings to earn his first win of the season.

Reliever Frank Luis Medina (0-1) allowed one run on four hits and was charged with the loss.

In the game Pinar’s outfielder, Osniel Madera, hit his second homer of the season.

CIENFUEGOS 4, MATANZAS 2

Juan M. Soriano hit a go-ahead solo homer in the fourth inning, and visiting Cienfuegos beat Matanzas 4-2 at Mario Martínez Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Yasmani Insúa (1-1) limited Matanzas to one earned run over five innings, earning his first win of the 54 NS.

In a shortened game, only seven innings were played, Leorisbel Sánchez (2) closed the game with one struck out in the seventh, for his second save of the season.

Joel Suárez (0-1) allowed three runs and five hits in three innings, and the Matanzas Cocrodiles lost their first game against Cienfuegos this season.
