2016 Cuban Finals: Ciego Smokes Pinar in Cuban Championship Opener

Yesterday the Ciego de Villa Tigers scored early and often to down the Pinar del Rio Tobacco Growers 9-4. They scored three in the first and three in the second to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. Pinar veteran Wilber Perez got the start but could only retire one hitter in the opening frame before getting the hook.

After retiring the leadoff hitter a single sandwiched between two walks loaded the bases and sent Perez to the showers. Two more walks and a wild pitch plated the first three runs. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases again in the second inning where Ariel Borrero took advantage by slicing a single to center to score two. Yeniet Perez drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly.

The Tigers almost gave the runs right back in the fourth, Vladimir Garcia showing a bit of wildness with two walks after a single to load the bases. A two out double error by shortstop Yorbis Borroto and Guillermo Aviles allowed all three runners to score and an infield single by Michael Gonzalez scored the fourth run to close the gap to 6-4. All of the runs were unearned since Garcia should have been out of the inning with the grounder to Borroto.

Ciego bounced back on an RBI double in the bottom half of the fourth by Yeniet Perez to extend their lead. They finished their scoring with two runs in the seventh to win 9-4. Yunier Cano closed out the game retiring Pinar in order in the ninth, two of them as a result of punch outs.

Pinar and Ciego have dominated the Cuban baseball league the last five years. Each team has won two championships during that time, with Villa Clara winning in between to stop the streak. Pinar won championships in 2011 and 2014. Ciego won championships in 2012 and 2015.
